Huh. I always thought it was "trying to keep a football in my hand, instead I'm going under" which didn't super make sense but a lot of lyrics in that era didn't, plus I was a metal head in high school when it came out so I've only heard the song a couple dozen times, so I never questioned it until now. Gallery of Suicide by Cannibal Corpse came out in '98 which really got me the most into metal, although hearing Hammer Smashed Face in Ace Ventura in '94 probably piqued my interest but I was only 7 when that came out. Then Midian by Cradle of Filth and Follow the Reaper by Children of Bodom both came out in 2000 and I really went down the rabbit hole of metal which pretty much killed my interest in Grunge, Hip-hop, and G-funk, so by the time the pop-punk scene took off I just didn't care particularly. Going back years later, some bands I grouped into that scene like AFI and Thrice actually have some really good music I missed out on.

Underclass Hero was the song in Madden '08, OP's lyrics were In Too Deep, but that is still funny and ironic that 6-7 years after I had misheard lyrics of one of their songs involving a football they end up in a football game that I did play a lot.
