I had a book slumped for almost a decade even though I keep buying books regularly. I went back to reading two years ago but couldn’t keep up the habit. I picked up The Vanished Birds because I was looking for more local authors and he was listed under FilAm authors. After reading this, I discovered the joy of reading again. Last year I’ve read about 14 books, now I’ve finished about 17 books. I picked up Spears on Audible recently and planning to listen it to it during the holiday break but planning to get a hard bound copy at some point. I’ve enjoyed the discussions and loved all the details that everyone has pointed out and the first chapter did hook me and loved Fumiko’s storyline and her redemption at the end. Listening to this discussion made me want to join a local book club.

Elaine Castillo’s America is not the Heart, Ken Liu’s Paper Menagerie, Gabrielle Zevin’s Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Donna Tartt’s Goldfinch, Gina Apostol’s Bibliolepsy and a lost classic But for the Lovers by Wilfrido Nolledo.
