Hey, look! It's the review I prophesied about! 😂 The more that I think about this book, the more I love it and how it's a novel of opposites: it's epic yet intimate, a space opera but folkloric (which in my mind are two extreme opposites), and poetic yet straightforward in its writing (as I mentioned in one of my early voice messages, the writing was soothing). I cannot wait for his fantasy novel to be released later this year!

I did really enjoy the almost storytelling vibes of the first and later chapters. The diary entry chapters were my favorite. I think the author is a wonderful writer but in the end there wasn't as much to cling onto outside of themes. And despite that i remenber the ending was heart tugging. I don't remember what happened but it happy-hurt. Glad you got to enjoy this with others

I picked this up a while ago and found it to be a surprisingly lyrical and emotional read. Would definitely recommend to literary sci-fi fans.

Having come back now, after an hour of recovering from my emotional breakdown, I can only agree with all you said... Though, being still somewhat inexperienced reading Sci-fi, I wasn't able to see the inspirations.

Yesssss ! This was one of my favorite books in 2020 !! If you loved The Vanished Birds I'd recommend Vagabonds by Hao Jinfang translated by Ken Liu. It has similar tones.

Great thoughts, wonderful book! Also fingers crossed it won't be underrated for long - I live in Slovenia, which is tiny, and our biggest bookstore more or less only stocks classics and big sellers - but I saw they had a bunch of copies a few months ago and honestly nearly did a dance of joy in public.
