The Vanished Village of Angikuni Lake

Deep in the Keewatin Barrens of what is now the territory of Nunavut, amid an endless plain of tundra and muskeg, lies lonely Angikuni Lake, one of a myriad of near-identical watering holes which dot the historic homeland of the Inuit and Chippewyan Nations. This nondescript body of water serves as the setting of one of Canada’s spookiest urban legends: the story of village of 25 Inuit said to have vanished without a trace in the autumn of 1930.

Hammerson, about 20 years ago I took a non stop flight from Detroit, Michigan to South Korea. I flew completely over the country of Canada, across Alaska, and down the coast of Russia to South Korea. I was most amazed at the hours and hours of complete wilderness while flying over Canada. It astounded me. I fantasized about crash landing and knew how I would never be found because the land is so vast. While experiencing it, the size of the Canadian wilderness really blew my mind.

I remember flying from San Diego to Adak Alaska. This was in 1979. I was stunned at all the wilderness myself. I remember how often I'd heard we were over populated. Well I thought , they haven't seen this vast wilderness. I was humbled at how our forefathers managed to survive at all.

Angikuni Lake is large enough (510 sq km) to require a careful survey of the area to determine whether an Inuit campsite actually existed there. Investigating this story would be a major undertaking requiring substantial funds, an archaeological team, and most importantly - permission from the Inuit landowners.

I work in a museum & once found a photo of what I believed was a mysterious rockpile on local tribal land. I came to the conclusion that it had something to do with a group of crypto beings known to be part of Apsaalooke/Crow lore. Nope, that was my modern white fancifulness,it is a highway marker from the OG north American road system that other tribes could use, just like our modern system. It's rarely the most "interesting" explanation, but what's actually interesting is how advanced and very modern the native North Americans were & are. Extremely advanced in communication, ecological management, arts, and military strategy.

Most of us have heard this tale before, and I'm sure we are all glad to hear it again. It is a mystery, the type that gives vivid energy to ones imagination. Hearing it again, this time, I am reminded of the Dyatlov Pass incident of 1959. My instincts tell me that both stories are true and that each has the same culprit responsible for their disappearances. RIP Thanks for sharing with us Hammerson. Peace.

I think most evidence for Dyatlov points to the Soviet government covering something up. Some sort of military operation, or weapons testing. Having so much radiation on them, lack of animal bites/claws, and the way they scattered makes it seem more like some sort of weapon attack. Then afterwards, the coverup. USSR was incredibly secretive, and most evidence of the incident was hidden for decades. IIRC new evidence came out within the last couple of years, but I am not certain. As for this one...I have to believe that this small tribe was enslaved, and taken away to be sold, or used by who took them as slaves, or cannibalism. The lack of bodies, and most importantly bones, makes me believe that whatever demise they were subjected to didn't happen there. Animals would have left at the very least bones. Unless of course it was some sort of supernatural event, which is the only other way I can think of where there would be no remains left behind. Definitely could just be a hoax too. What "culprit" do you think it was? You mentioned it that you felt it was the "same culprit for their disappearances", but didn't explain what exactly that was.

I agree. Native people were known to sacrifice themselves if they got sick, to avoid infecting the group, which is typically just a small part of the tribe. If the whole village got sick, esp if they knew they would be meeting with other bands of their own tribe soon (or even other neighbors), they well may have gone into the water to protect the larger community. I always get choked up thinking of the two young native men here, who threw themselves off a cliff to avoid infecting others with smallpox, but I am.happy their sacrifice is remembered. Their tribe was very, very small then (northern cheyenne) & faced near extinction. Those boys may have truly saved their tribe.

Was there ice on the lake around the time the village would have been abandoned? I ask because some event could have happened that could have spooked the whole village out of their homes and across the frozen lake, only to have the ice they were on to flip, trapping them under the ice to their deaths. I should be easy to test with a scan/dredge of the lake bottom near the village as some items should not have been able to degrade, even after all this time. The only other explanation would have been a village vs village skirmish as you have suggested. The only thing that seems odd about that theory is why weren't the valuables taken? At the very least the dogs?

I was thinking they were enslaved, or taken by cannibals considering no bones, or remains were found anywhere. You would think they would have taken the dogs, and all their valuables as well if that were the case though. Other than some sort of supernatural explanation, I can't think of anything else besides the hoax being most accurate. The dogs make the story less believable to me. Leaving them behind, making up a story about fishing and feeding them when he was so scared he wanted to leave. Just doesn't make sense he would have took the time to do that, and then leave the dogs behind thinking they were diseased. If they couldn't feed themselves before he got there, he was leaving them to die regardless. Claiming to hang around, in fear, just to feed the dogs, only to leave them to die just isn't logical.

This tale evoked tales told by other tribes in NA of raids by the "giants" on their settlements to kidnap people. While this is a hoax, it seems probable that it is based on an older tale from the region. It would be fascinating if we could reverse the process and instead of seeing the legend evolve and be added to, rather see it pared away to the origin story, however hoaxers dont usually leave traces of their source materials.

Here is a story which embarrassed the RCMP be being TOTALLY TRUE! They RCMP had people tell them it was true, but they would have Nunavut. That's right, when officials deny something you should assume they are lying and take a smug, elitist posture when people try to convince you it's "irrational". This story happened again in 2000s. I went to Yukon to investigate.they said red sky fish light beings took neighbor village. People and dogs were visiting the other village and never went home either. Not home for kids dogs grandmas. So taken? My elders sent me to go ask light beings why. The answer was as confusing as the story. I was sent because i had had cancer and was presumed to be half dead as lymphoma was then a death sentence.
