They are my favorite band of all time. I have listened to the mantle more times then any other album by far, I discovered them when I was about 16 years old, I'm turning 34 this month. they have been a huge influence on me both as a person and as guitarist. I saw them twice, once I drove for like 8 hours roadtripped to catch them. I missed their last show thinking they would be back again within a couple years, regret it to this day. there simply isnt another band quite like them and they will always be my favorite I think. their music finds a way deep in my soul.

I also love Agalloch. I got to see them perform In The Shadow Of Our Pale Companion live for the first time they’ve ever done it live. It was about an eight minute version. I wish I recorded it on my phone but I was far too in the moment and they were also one of my favorite bands at that time, as well. I got to hang out with the whole band for like half an hour that night before their set because the fire alarms went off at the church that they were playing at that night. Imagine the shock lol. But they are all extremely intelligent guys. Do you listen to any other bands like them? I’m always looking for similar bands to fill that void while I constantly recycle Agalloch’s catalogue. One of my favorite bands that is similar and worth checking out is Drudkh. It’s a Ukrainian black metal/folk band that’s themes are all about old Ukrainian poems. Luckily they are still active.

I have discovered Agalloch very late because barely last year. I have no idea how they are not more famous cause for me in a few days they became one of the best metal bands ever on my private list and I listen to more then 100 metal bands easily. Extremely beautiful compositions, executed in a brilliant way, extreme talent in combining different genres in such way that it doesn't sound strange. Such magic... Very sad that the band is not making more music.

I found Agalloch when Pale Folklore was new. I saw them play at the 9:30 club in Washington DC around the time of the Mantle. I also purchased each album on vinyl as it was released. I eventually ended up selling all but Pale Folklore and the Mantle as they were the ones I always reach for when I get the Agalloch mood. I still have a cool the Mantle long sleeve shirt as well.

Only a tiny tiny tiny amount of bands and albums can make me feel a certain way when listening to them. The mantle by agalloch, winter's gate by insomnium, and natasha by pig destroyer are the only times I have ever been able to feel this way. I usually dont rank anything when it comes to music because it always boils down to personal preference, so when I think winter's gate is thee magnum opus and greatest achievement in musical history, I feel it serves some significance.

You may like some of Seven Spires music. They also have a dark gothy style on their new album. They're mostly symphonic metal for the most part, but check out Bury You, and maybe Unmapped Darkness. This was nice. I would add that 'Ashes Against the Grain' is the most post-rock/noise influenced. Tracks like 'Limbs' and 'Fire Above, Ice Below' are somewhat reminiscent of GSY!BE, while the Bloodbirds suite part III sounds a bit like 'Surrogate Drone' off of Swans' 'Soundtracks for the Blind'.

The Mantle > Pale Folklore > Marrow of the Spirit > Ashes Against The Grain > Serpent I don't know if you've looked into their EP's but check The White and Faustian Echoes, both absolutely amazing records! There are some other gems in their early EP's as well, I personally like their cover of Sol Invictus's Kneel To The Cross and their demo song This Old Cabin it's a premitive song with an unconventional structure, it has sweet melodies that I love as a guitar player. I always get fascinated by dem riffs Of Stone, Wind and Pillor is probably a fan favourite when it comes to their EP's as well. As for their main albums, I think The Mantle might actually be my favourite album of all time :) it's just an amazing full experience, yet if you take each song individually they're still amazing on their own. Hard to pick favourite songs off it, In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion is just a timeless song... You were but a Ghost in my Arms is up there as well, the second half of The Hawthorne Passage is just magical.

I took a big break from Agalloch after their last album. I didn't even realize about the drama back in 2019. All I gotta say is it was way overblown by a bunch of oversensitive drama queens. Agalloch's remaining members' take on the issue was unnecessary too, specially the part where they felt the need to say "John is NOT Agalloch". Their drummer is still making fun of John even to this day which is just sad lmao. It's cool to hear that John and Don are starting to get along again or whatever, but honestly, if we're ever to see anything related to Agalloch again, I'd rather have it be a John's solo project.
@gratuitousfootnote11833 жыл бұрын
i can kind of understand it - in this political climate, john's comment pretty much tainted any and all social capital that the other band members might have otherwise enjoyed, and some of them may have felt pressure to put a lot of distance between them and the comment in a dramatic fashion. That's especially true for any aspiring academic. And think of how much promotion agalloch could have received over the years that they lost due to cancel culture. I know I don't dare post any of their videos in a public forum. But let's be honest - that over the top preachy political band the other guys formed was a bit cringe.

I found Agalloch back in 2005, when I was exploring music on Limewire. I found one song, Dead Winter Days, that lead to trying their albums. I didn't like it first because I was more of a Dream Theater style fan. One fine day it just hit me. And I listened to The Mantle back to back. Eventually it became my favourite band. I used to jam with a band, trying to cover 3 songs by Agalloch, including The Lodge dismantled. But my band was so obsessed by Agalloch and Alcest, that I got bored of the band as well. Because even the originals my band tried sounded like these two bands. I on the other hand wanted to try stuff in the same style but unique. Eventually I left the band. I honestly think Alcest is a horrible clone of Agalloch. I personally never liked them, but that's my opinion, no need to attack me. These days I am hooked to Woods of Ypres, which I had initially dumped because I thought they sounded too similar to Agalloch, however on closer inspection, I realised I was wrong. Agalloch remains to be one of the most profound bands I have ever listened to in my life.

You made quite a blunder saying "to each their own" dismissing racists remarks. "to each their own" was written over the front-gate of the concentration camp buchenwald.
@singulation3 жыл бұрын
LOL that's quite a reach comparing my general conversational statement to Nazi Germany. Additionally, you took my statement out of context. I stated "to each their own" because his statements were jokes which some will have no problem with, while others will find it offensive. Hence why I stated "to each their own." Also Judaism is a religion, not a race, so his statements are not racist, they would be considered anti-Semitic.
@JOhnDoe-nl4wj3 жыл бұрын
@@singulation I haven't said anything about judaism. Honestly, jews haven't been the only group targeted by the nazis, way before they targeted politcal groups, especially communists and socialists as well as ethical groups such as roma etc. The more you know. Regardless, wasn't my intention to lump you together with or labeling as a racists. Just said you made a blunder (unintentionally i hope), which you did. It's like saying something about the black minority in america often not being in employment and relying on state well-fare. We should do something about that, after all.. "arbeit macht frei". If you know the reference you probably understand how this is lowkey racists. Or if i would say, i don't care much about judaism, life and let die, to each their own. The difference saying stuff like that is knowing the reference and be racists or not knowing the reference and making a blunder. cheers.
