Thank you very much for this very touching review. You really nailed it when it comes to what we were trying to express with the game's backstory. I wasn't aware of that Camera glitch where you can't switch tools after control is taken from the player. Will look into it for sure. 🤙

Maybe this is just me reading too much into it, but when I saw our avatar image on the top floor of the Geo City building... that was when it hit me. That we were simply "returning home", earning back what we willingly casted away. That we are the dev that left. The apartment at the end? It's the same apartment we can see beyond the door in the main menu, should we want to leave the game instead. It's our home in the real world, and a reflection of how fucked up it is, probably the reason folks want to stay in the illusion that is NATEM. This is just my interpretation, but I think we go through the Innernet to find a backdoor into the core of NATEM, to shut it all down. There are still some mysteries I don't fully understand. Are ZeroChan and OneeChan the same, one being an earlier version of another? Is Error the actual ZeroChan? And was OneeChan modelled after the Dev's soulmate, who then left him? Is she the other dev, or would that be the ellusive Phisherman? Such a mystery it is... I wonder if the VR game will shine some light on it...

4:00 I think that's sobe (stylized SoBe). I had to look it up. Surprised I found it. Apparently they're still around. I remember there was a white one I really liked. It's kind of strange, for just a moment, when you're reminded of something from your childhood that you haven't thought about in decades. Not really that strange, but kinda. There should be a word for that.

The stylized wave pattern around the slot is Greek, same goes for the letters. VOP stands for 'very old pale'. So I think it might be a reference to Ouzo, though I'm not sure which brand in particular.

Nostalgia might be the word you're looking for? I believe that would cover that phenomena
@svperuzer Жыл бұрын
@@arknark Not nostalgia. Or at least not exclusively nostalgia. Nostalgia is thinking back fondly on something. What I was talking about has an uncanny quality to it. Like remembering something from a past life or something. It's like simultaneously feeling both a sense of familiarity and foreignness. I got the same feeling recently when I saw a cartoon I used to watch as a child that I hadn't thought about since I was maybe 7 or 8 years old. It's like: "holy shit, I remember this. That's crazy!"

Happy to find another video on this game! It needs some more attention! I'm a sucker for any game with a cool unique artstyle so when I first saw this game I knew I had to get it. I figured to game was gonna be more style over substance (which isn't necessarily a bad imo) but I left the game with a whole lot more substance than I expected. The presentation of the game is amazing. I honestly open up the game everynow and then just to walk through the first area again. The visuals and ambience and music are spot on. I did experience a few bugs and inconsistentcies but it was never anything too major. Hoping the sequel will be even better whenever that comes out!

I prefer to see "the internet", and any other form of escapism, be it games, books, music, films, anime, whatever, not in the mutually exclusive, dualistic sense of "doing this instead of real life", but rather as simply another part of existence, of "real life". Looking at anything that makes one happy or keeps one sane, in that mutually exclusive sense, just reminds me of dumb teenagers saying "get a life" to each other in attempted put-downs. Like, what's the point of seeing anything that way, other than trying to be the person who thinks they're better than everyone else? Once one has been alive for long enough and experienced many different kinds of living, everything is a legitimate part of existence, including escapism.

It might have been asked/suggested, but there is a game kind of similar to this called 'Hypnospace Outlaw' that is a point and click 1999 internet simulator. Hypnospace has a spin-off Boomer Shooter called 'Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance of the Slayer' (vengeance is spelled wrong on purpose). Both would be right up your alley.

I am always on the hunt for the illusive "games like this"....harder than you might think because I've played most of the main ones and a lot of people will recommend games that vaguely look like this but have no substance, are glorified platformers, FPS, or other other janky mess with epilepsy inducing low res gaudy colours. Somehow this is one of the few that achieves the trippy feel without being hard on the eyes, it's relaxing yet has enough game elements to be interesting without being too frustrating or rage inducing. It has exploration elements, story elements with progression, and RPG elements. It has a good amount of content without being overly repetitive or dull. I know what you mean by wanting to hang out in this world. Few games really can do that. Would love to see suggestions on others like this, but probably I already know. Sludge Life, Jazz Punk, Solar Panic, and Norwood Suite are among the better ones. Mango was great too, but it eventually gets frustrating and very dark. Video Hole and a few others were cute but short and a bit less well written (I'm still waiting on chapter 2). I'm not sure why there is a flood of horror based trippy games these days....who would want to hang out in a nightmare?

The use of hindu/buddhist religious imagery isn't a incident I imagine. Its very clear they are cracks in a reality so consumed in materialism. Considering how you get back to the apartment and what seems like the overall message is, it makes sense to why you see messages like "ready to transend" and such. In a sense, Broken Reality world is a incarnation, a world you live in that isn't the true reality. What started as a funny parody turns into a gut punch to wake you from a reality dominated by memes, pop culture, nostalgia, and material excess.

SPOILER! So my assumption with the game's plot is that you play as a smurf account for one of the original developers of the game. Zerochan was made in the likeness of your ex-girlfriend which later developed a consciousness, OneeChan promises that you can see the admin if you get popular enough, which makes me believe the OneeChan IRL is your ex-girlfriend, who has since abandoned the game following your breakup. The only way to reunite with her is to delete all of Broken Reality and delete Zero/Onee and all the NPCs you've met so far.

Up until then, I'd really enjoyed the game but man, that ending sequence convinced me there was so much more going on than outdated memes and cool songs. It's one of the trippiest and most emotionally cathartic sequences in a game with one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Even if you don't understand it you feel it you know, and it gave me a new perspective of the game's world on repeat playthroughs.
