This was interesting. As info to many commenting, caballo is horse in Spanish. Caballero is horseman, gentleman and knight, the latter coming from the medieval period because then the horseman (of nobility, military or both) was and had to be much more than just a man riding a horse (no peasants could ride only work from the ground). Vaca is cow, so vaquero is cattle hand, ranch hand, herdsman, in short everyone who worked cattle. In Spain 99.9% of vaqueros obviously also rode and still ride horses. The conquerors (conquistadores) took their lifestyle with them.
@lohaiza216

Vaqueros originated in Mexico not Spain. Spaniards were not vaqueros they were Ganaderos. They just tamed cattle with horses and stuff. But the true Vaquero Traditions are of Mexico origin they were developed by the Mestizos. The cowboy hat and boots and all that cool stuff you see originated in Northern Mexico. Spaniards didn't have that stuff. Charros are the ones who wear the sombreros vaqueros wear the cowboy hat.
@akanewe
@akanewe 8 жыл бұрын
lohaiza, you are adding to my point without realizing it. Should we go back to the begining? The language is the language and what you understand by it is your problem. Vaquero is a Spanish word meaning just what it means, "person who manages vacas, bovine cattle" from there whatever......I am Sapnish so I know. Your "Spanish" is Mexican Spanish, whether you know it or not, it is mispronounced, grammatically incorrect and corrupted Spanish (imposed on the conquered people found by Hernán Cortez and his invaders). From the Spanish those were forced to speak, came the "Spanish" spoken in any S. American country, each with its own variations of Spanish. So, vaqueros did not originate here or there, the word is what I am talking about, so there were vaqueros (in their own language) in Mongolia, Algeria, India, China or wherever you choose to look. What "YOU" call or consider a vaquero is your problem, whatever image you have given the word is your thing, hence people, areas and countries vary the original meaning of words, I am talking about the Spanish word "vaquero". Now your idea of the origin of the vaquero culture is completely wrong. For your information the Mexicans that the Spanish found wore nothing like what you see today. The clothes they wore in time of conquest were the Spanish clothes (if they were to be considered civilized, morally wrong but this is history) Do you know what a "mestizo" is in Spanish? A cross or mix of breed. Therefore the mestizos were a mix of Spanish and Mexican. They developed in their own way what the Spanish had imposed and taught or forced on them, no doubt...this is why Mexican cattle hands look nothing like Spanish cattle hands today, of course. Yet there was a time when the Mexican vaquero did not even exist because the Spanish had not yet conquered Mexico (not before 1519), this is history...no moral value, plain history. So all your stuff about boots, hats and charros is whatever you want it to be, I was and am talking about the laguage and the historical facts.

Before the arrival of spanish there were not even horses in amrica bastard.

scot gcoab don't be a fucken idiot, the Spanish didn't denominate there self vaqueros, this term was used by the charros(mostly criollos of wealthy family's ) to refer to the mestizos(native/europien mixed) who tended there cattle due to the fact that Native Americans were not allowed to ride. The vaquero started to evolve until it finally rich is more familiar form in Chihuahua which was adopted by the Americans. To say the the first cowboy were spanish would be the same to say the first gaucho or huaso( south american cowboy)were spanish. And if you're trying to generalize with the word vaquero, then yes the Spanish were the first and before them were the Moors the mongoloid and whoever tended cattle before then.
@50magnum805
@50magnum805 7 жыл бұрын
Dang Erous I think what Lohaiza 21 means is that, Mexicans were the first North American Cowboy as we know it today in the United States and Mexico. The world vaquero come from the Latin word vaccarius. The Spanish Horseman practice the tradition doma vaquera ( domadura vacunna or taming of cattle) but did not denominate there self vaqueros just like they did not denominate there self gaucho ( Argentinen cowboy, llaneros (Venezuelans cowboy) or any other of the South American cowboys. When we say Mexican we're not talking about Native Americans before the Spanish, we're talking about a culture and a group of people that are descended from Spaniards and Native. The charro evolved from the caballeros and the vaquero evolved from the charro ( its teacher). And I do understand your point, Cowboys were way before the Mexicans, spanish and the moors; you can even argue that the first Vaqueros or Cowboys were the first people who domesticated cattle.

The Spanish did the first cattle and horse drive in 1598 under Juan de Onate! They started the first ranches, had the first rodeos (etc.). Why do people think the first vaqueros were Texans or Californians? They were latecomers! Read about the New Mexicans! Luciano Martinez

What do you mean by first Rodeo? The charro was the desendent of the spanish cowboy and the Mexican vaquero developed in Chihuahua and and spread North to Texas and California, not to mention that most Californian Cowboys we're not in Alta California but in Baja California.
@fidelrivera2845

The first rodeo, or roundup, was in 08-11-1598. As soon as the colonists arrived they let their cattle and horses out to graze. That evening they had to round up their herds to protect them from the Indians. So that was the first Rodeo (duh)!

Fidel Rivera yes which was more likely in the center of Mexico since that's where the Spanish first are to populate and spread their cattle. By first rodeo I mean the American event that consists of many sports the most popular one being bullriding. Bull riding was practice way before alta California, Texas, Chihuahua coahuila, Sonora or Baja California. It arose in central Mexico and then to spread north.

@50magnum805
@50magnum805 7 жыл бұрын
Fidel Rivera yes the American Rodeo was a misunderstanding of the Mexicans when they used to bring cattle and horses into rodeos. A rodeo was a circular structure made usually which large rocks or stones that were meant to hold horses and Cattle when they were going to be branded or sold off. Many times after the selling of livestock celebrations would be held in these rodeos where are they would practice a spectacle called jaripeo ( bullriding). Americans associated bull riding with rodeos and that gave birth to the modern rodeo. To roundup is to redondiar with is why rodeo was called cat it's called. To herd cattle is arriar ganado. The first cattle was herded up north from central Mexico specialty major ports like veracrus. Rodeo American( United states) even, Bullring (mexican sport).

I think this is the same lady who filmed me for her documentary when I was working as an outrider for tourist rides on the Oregon Trail near Poison Spider Creek, Wyoming in 2006. My grandmother five generations ago was a Californio, her husband Frank Bekheart owned the gunshop in Coloma in the El Dorado gold country. Most all my family living today have left California because we consider California to be a fallen authoritarian Socialist state and the beginning of the demise of the United States of America (kind of like Venezuela, North Korea, and China). I would say that the independent Buckaroo tradition and lifestyle will be stamped out by the same immoral and corrupt people who are dismantling America and the western Democracies in 2021.

Very interesting... but I must ask: If the Spanish word for horse is "Cavalo"... wouldnt the word "Cavallero" (or a word to that effect) be a more accurate term or title to describe a "horseman"?? Just asking. Maybe I'm reading into it to much... but perhaps the adjective "Vaquero" was applied because it was the cattle that they were working with that were deemed as greater importance and the horse was viewed as more of a means to accomplish the successful working of cattle. Just my 2cents.

It descended from Spain and originated in Northern Mexico. It's like saying that the first bull riders(mexican sport) where the Spanish just because bull riding originated from bullfighting (spanish sport) even though they did not ride bulls in spain.

el vaquero nace y se hace en México con la ayuda de la cultura Española. Por eso vas a encontrar "vaqueros" en otros países hispanoamericanos pero cada uno adaptado y con un nombre diferente. El vaquero nació en México.

You get a 50%! Hence, you fail! "Mexican" is a nationality. If the Spanish were in 'Nueva Expana' i.e.: Mexico then, the first vaqueros were "Mexican". Get it?

It was the Spanish Conquistadors and other Europeans who first brought horses, cattle and the hacienda system to what they first called "New Spain" (and later "Mexico") and it was the Spanish landlords who taught the native indios the art of horsemanship as well as the Spanish language that is still spoken there today. So it was technically the Spaniards who were the very first "vaqueros"... and the Mexicans later became Vaqueros, Ranchos and Charros when they won their independence.
