I think the Desser's incident was a penalty for the shirt pull - BUT take a look at what McCausland (I think) is doing with the keeper. If VAR are going to be of any use then they can't just look at the shirt pull in isolation. It's good to know that unnatural body position supersedes proximity - let's see how consistent that becomes.
@scottmackintosh59343 ай бұрын
That's a good point. I'm a Rangers fan and a referee and I know that you cannot impede the run of a goalkeeper at all. However, you have to punish the worst offence. McAusland would not receive a yellow for that. The foul on Dessers might be. If it is then the penalty would be awarded instead of the foul on the keeper. However, as a referee I am lenient with yellow cards and if the rules allow it, I do not give cards. This decision is not a nailed on yellow for me. So I would then look at what foul happened first. Which is the foul on the keeper. So I personally would award a free kick to the goalkeeper and then bore everyone with this explanation. The Souttar one is not a red card as I don't believe he's done that deliberately. I think they are wrong about Butland. That shot is powerful and going into the net. It is an accidental handball though to deny a goal(not a goalscoring opportunity as the shot has been taken), which is a yellow card. Free kick to St Johnstone Penalty Hibs, yellow for Souttar I also disagree with the scales one. I think it does hit him low enough on the arm, but I think the proximity does matter and he tries to move his arm out the way. No penalty, but in a different way from what Collum describes. The Lennon handball is a stonewall foul lol. Really good to see this though and I believe we've got it way better than England as the VAR discussions seem logical and they usually get it right
@jamesneeson98253 ай бұрын
Looking at that it is difficult to determine where the ball strikes Scales . When they say frame by frame playback it’s way to fast if they are going frame by frame it has to be slower so the ref can apportion blame and make the correct decision.

@mjudec3 ай бұрын
Very strange. For me it's a deliberate handball. For the team at the game it isn't ..ok, I can accept that. What I can't accept is that it isn't DOGSO. The shot is within the 6 yard box and heading goalward. The keeper has the chance to save any shot if he's in his goal, but the 2nd O means opportunity, not certainty. This isn't a header or shot from 14/15 yards out that's blocked and we don't know for sure where it's going. This is a high percentage scoring shot. Absolutely nonsense that it's not DOGSO. Any other country in the world (or any other team in Scotland some might say.. I couldn't possibly comment) and that's a DOGSO. Most would say a DOGSO red. But no card in that situation....only in Scotland.

Openly reviewing these incidents with the audio from VAR is an excellent development for openness and learning for all, including the officials. The referee's job is to apply the rules. What concerns me is the laws around 'unnatural hand position' ; the notion that a defender spinning around to block an attacker at a corner or blocking a shot should have their arms by their sides 'tucked in' is nonsensical from a physiological point of view.

Although I'd never do this, I genuinely feel that if I gave zero handballs the rest of the season no matter what, I'd have no complaints to me at the end of a game. @joereynolds5476 I think the Hibs one is a handball. Arm is needlessly high, away from the body and it looks so unnatural to block the ball in that way. The Halliday one looks harsh as the ball is blasted at him, however, it's a case where the ball has been struck and the player looks scared of the ball, turns his head away and puts his arm up in fear. People will say that he doesn't have time to react but this is wrong. He does react. He has time to duck and put his arm in the air. I think it looks harsh but is a penalty. Although I don't like giving handball, I would probably give these decisions as penalties. I know I would get stick for the Halliday one but I'd do my best to explain it lol
@Torky19653 ай бұрын
It's a good thing that Collum is reviewing these decisions but at the end of the day it's just proving what the supporters of every club think already, that's that our referees are totally incompetent. The only way to stop decisions being subjective is to make it clear what's a red card, because I think Souttar's was, what constitutes a penalty this above the elbow and below the elbow or whether the arm is close to the body or away from it are all open to opinion, in my view take the subjectivity out of it and make it clear that's a penalty if it hits the arm, whether it be soft or not. If these guys on VAR are trained properly they should all come to the same conclusions but the fact that they don't proves to me again that the referees are just incompetent.

Straight from the IFAB website for this seasons rule changes: ‘Player encroachment can be difficult to detect and manage, especially at the lower levels of the game, where there may be no neutral assistant referees. However, it can easily be identified by the video assistant referee, and if Law 14 were to be applied strictly, most penalty kicks would be retaken. Since encroachment rarely affects the outcome of the kick (only if the ball rebounds into play), the same principle should apply to player encroachment as to goalkeeper encroachment, i.e. it is penalised only if it has an impact.’ But it’s because the refs are all masons isn’t it

Scales arm wasn't in an unnatural position. How do you twist/turn towards the play with your arms tight by your side? As for Soutar the logic is ridiculous. If an attacker is through on goal & a defender pulls the attacker down it's a red card every time no matter if the keeper has a chance to make a save or not? Souttar's handball stopped a goalscoring opportunity in the same way. If the criteria is for a goalscoring opportunity. Then Soutar must see red too. Could be seen as unfortunate but what's the difference?

We (referees based outside Scotland) agree it should have been a DOGSO red.

@@joereynolds5476 Souttar's arm was only in a natural position if he was a goalkeeper. Scales I'm on the fence with but the point remains it was overturned for not being a handball, not for a natural position of the arm.
@sugarman43543 ай бұрын
@@joereynolds5476 Hmm, I don't think it was in a natural position & he made a slight movement towards the ball with his arm. He was facing the danger while Scales had his back to the play. Still Soutar was unlucky as he had to throw his body in the way but he ultimately stopped a goalscoring opportunity. I always thought that was a red card offence? I guess it's not.
@joereynolds54763 ай бұрын
@@mjudecThat's a natural position for the body movement. Unfortunately, too many, including IFAB and referees, think an arm away from the body can't be a position which is a consequence of body movement. Where should his arm have been? Don't say by his side, because that is never a natural position, even though we hear the ridiculous "arm was in a natural position by his side".

Wullie couldn't make it as a footballer, referee...so he was handed the head of refereeing post so he could talk like. Police officer about forensics of decisions 😂 the games a joke these days! "The VAR" 3 grown men in a booth full of teles running the game 👌🏻 looking back on it only goes to show the VAR is a waste of time...clear red card ignored in mirren game, and no chat about retrospective cards! Pre var celtic players were retrospectively banned for grazing a rangers players knee off the ball 😂😂😂 Mon wullie clean he game up, don't pander to folk with these awful videos of you treating errors with the same grace as correct decisions!

Yep like I thought. I said I'd watch it first then give my opinion. Rangers benefit just like last months. Butland foot was off the line should have been retaken the hibs pen. They paused it before the hibs player hit the ball. Rfc always cheating and still not winning trophies. There fan base accept second best now as celtic are the most succesful team in scotland with the most major trophies 118 and counting. I will not reply to bigots so cry away. Goodbye 👍
