That cutscene actually got reworked in Patch 6.2, I think, when they added Duty Support for HW dungeons. Originally, Alphinaud wasn't in that cutscene and nobody was trying to heal. They put him in to illustrate that simple healing cannot undo fatal blows like that. Major wounds like that need to be seen to by chirurgeons, FFXIV's version of surgeons. If that attack didn't kill Haurchefant so quickly, he could have been saved by Ishgard's chirurgeons. But that attack was intended specifically for you, and that's why he died so quickly. That scene still stung hard, even on my 3rd playthrough, but the next scene stung even harder when we had to tell Count Edmont...
@GrandmaTwo8 күн бұрын
@@mr.mystere4999 I heard about that 😭 is so intense now too because of it and you can even see how that impacts Alphi in the story, the way he becomes so determined not to lose anyone else. And they twist the knife so many more times event after it happens. I do not cry easy but this game keeps getting me!
@IKMcGwee6 күн бұрын
There was also lot of people who were healers during that cs, such as yourself, and were like "imma healer I can heal him!!!" So Alphi was also there to say "no you can't heal him." There also a little more to that attack but that's for the finale of HW.

Man, I've been trying to get into the game's story, and... This character is just so disappointing to me, from its introduction to his death, and arguarbly even past his death. I'm genuinely asking : what is he appeal of this character ?
@GrandmaTwo18 күн бұрын
Not every character is for every person I guess! I don't think you can force yourself to feel something for them if you don't already. For me it was that they took us in at great personal risk and felt like a protective big brother to Miso, my WoL. Also I think the character design is quite lovely, especially their nose :>
@elaine_of_shalott658713 күн бұрын
I'll say for me it was when he had to be physically restrained from joining us in fighting Shiva despite the risks. Only two characters in ARR really ever showed any hesitation in tossing us alone into the path of a Primal. Thancred, and Haurchefant. Alphinaud on the other hand casually refers to how inconvenient it would be for him to find someone else to fight primals if you got yourself killed. Other characters fell in between.
@ralaphal13 күн бұрын
So it really takes that little for some people, huh... I personally don't see the "personal risk" in taking in someone that has proven itself to be more than just helpful, but willing to work for the faction on multiple occurences, and being efficient at it. And "hesitation" isn't really something that feels like that should shape and entire character on about. But then it becomes more understandable how people would come to praise HW, when for me it only falls a tad less flat than in ARR (ARR patches included).
@GrandmaTwo13 күн бұрын
@@ralaphal That's your opinion I guess! As I said, it's fine if its not your cup of tea. But to suggest that it takes "that little" for some people just because you don't see it doesn't make it true and it's weird to try and convince people not to care about them. It takes a lot to make me cry actually :)
@elaine_of_shalott658711 күн бұрын
@@ralaphal You are forgetting tempering. Battle with a primal carries a high risk of ending up under permanent mind control for anyone without the Echo. Tempered individuals are usually killed by their allies because there is no cure. So yes, viewing us as a person for whom he was willing to take the risk of near certain death to protect instead of just a weapon to solve his problems does make a difference in how I feel about the character. You of course are entitled to your opinion, but I think the fact you haven't been caught by the story is part of why you don't see how big a deal that was.
