GM's early-2000s European supermini was a best seller in the UK and for very good reason, but does its refinement and ease of use make it dull?

My corsa c is the finest car I’ve ever had, I’ve only spent about £600 in the 11 years I’ve had it on brakes , exhaust, crankshaft sensor, and a few bulbs blown , it’s now on 132,000, i oil change every 6 months, new filters , it’s a monster of a car, oh, and I only paid £500 for it, and it only had 31,000 on it. My bargain of the century

In Denmark they rarely came with A/C, but fully specced with safety features. My Corsa C had 6(!) airbags, ABS, active head rests, electric heated mirrors, but no A/C. They never came with less than 4 airbags, and I find it crazy that it only came with a driver's airbag in the UK! I had the 1.7 DTI, and it was hard to kill. Did 500'000 kms in it

I rented one of these for a week back in about 2006, I was visiting the UK at the time as I’d been living overseas for a few years and I wanted something cheap that I could pick up from the airport on arrival and drop off on departure. I did a lot of miles in that week and by the time I came to return the car I’d come to like it a lot. It was good on fuel, fast enough for long motorway journeys and easy around town, the luggage storage was adequate and it didn’t rattle squeak or groan as I’d expected it to.

Top video Ed. Loads of friends had the SXi version which seemed to be one of the most popular versions. When I went to work for the company I still work for in 2003 the girls who worked with us had these as company cars with the 1.7 diesel engine which in such a small car made it almost quite nippy away from the lights.. I do remember surprising a few town racers when I borrowed one and leaving them in a cloud of black smoke..

This was the first car I drove after passing driver's ed (2001 Opel Corsa C 1.2 Comfort). I'd say that, for the most part, you got this review right (judging from my memories from back then). Here's my take on things: The cupholders are terrible. It was a guarantee that any water bottle I tried to put there would fall very quickly, and the one on the glovebox was too small. It almost feels as if they were added just to tick a box on a checklist, and never tested at all. "Cupholders? Check!" Regarding the headrests: I recall having three back there on the car I drove, but I could be wrong on that. Regarding the interior: Mine didn't have that fancy trim in the middle, the radio was an older version with no CD player and it had no steering wheel controls. It was a sturdy interior, but boy did it look dull. My current Mk7,5 Fiesta feels like a Mercedes-Benz S-Class by comparison, when it comes to interior design. Regarding the engine sound: I completely disagree. To me, that was the best part about the car. I revved it up whenever possible just to hear it. Lovely sound, by far better than the three-cylinder Dacia I drove after that. That close gearing affects fuel economy, though. Not that old me cared too much about that part, though... Regarding the steering: I couldn't agree more. I remember getting into my driving school's Clio and wanting to take the car home with me, based on its steering feel. It felt excellent on 70 km/h roads. The Corsa's was very soft, by comparison. Regarding driving excitement: old me could drive just about anything and feel excited about it, but I remember that it handled decently. It was no Nissan GT-R, but decent enough for some spirited driving. Overall, answering your question: the Corsa C had a very dull interior design, a decent exterior design that could be improved significantlly by customization, and was fun to drive (despite that steering feel). That doesn't make it a bad car, though. It was well engineered, I have to say. Thank you for making this video! It brought back some old memories, that's for sure.

Installed leather seats in my corsa. Then put pop out cup holders in the middle of the rear seat too. Got it on Irmscher wheels and a load of other mods. Still an absolute turd to drive and the steering is more of a suggestion 😂. Brakes get hot and don’t work after a while and the worst part is no damn cruise control. Wish mine had it but it’s only a low end spec. It’s going soon and I’m gonna be a lot happier cause I won’t be fixing it every week 😂

I had a 2003 SXi also with the 1.2 as my first car. And like you said, it's a great car. Nicely styled, well equipped, well put together, frugal. And the short ratio gearbox meant it was kind of nippy. I never loved it, but I couldn't deny that as a car, it was really good.

To my mind, cars can be put into 2 groups. Cars for enthusiasts, and cars for people that just want comfortable, reliable and cost effective transportation. The Corsa C is clearly in the second of those groups. And I have never understood why they have been slated so much for that. In general the motoring press seem to be only interested in enthusiasts cars. Most people just want a car as transportation. Another great video. Thanks.

What could be more important than the chair you’re sitting in? For me, The best seats I’ve ever sat in were in my 93 Nissan Sentra (Sunny?) SE-R. They had simple adjustments, grippy velour cloth, great bolstering. And wings at the top to hold your shoulders in place! All in a cheap car...brilliant!

I had a 2006 Corsa SXi+ from 2013-17 with the 1.2ltr engine with a body kit & low profile alloy wheels, it had the half leather comfortable seats, electric windows but not a/c. It was very good on petrol, easy to drive & cheap to maintain. I did over 50,000 miles in four years & it always started & ran well. The boot comfortably took my two medium sized dogs with the parcel shelf removed. It’s the longest I ever kept any car. The downside was lack of creature comfort extras on long journeys.

I had one last year, a 3 pot 1 litre, it sounded good, good on fuel, cheap on insurance, but I think the interior leaves a lot to be desired. The exterior is well designed though, but dull? Halfway through the time that I learned to drive, one of my instructors changed from a 1994 Corsa B 1.4 (82 bhp) to a 2001 Corsa C 1.0 (57 bhp). The first impression was the lightness of the steering, the first car I ever drove with electric power steering. It was very basic, but not really tinny, and was quite revvy, although not fast. Visibility was excellent. Many years later, my former housemate finally passed his test at the age of 27, and got a 2006 Corsa C 1.2 SXi. It had the same Twinport 82 bhp engine as this one. I never liked the gearing, the acceleration was strong, but turning over almost 4000 rpm at 70 mph in fifth gear was just too much. The gearbox reminded me of the Corsa B as well, being a bit long in the throw, and not very nice to use, but definitely easy to know if it was in the right gear. Modern Vauxhall gearboxes are much better. The SXi had additional features over this one, such as seat height adjustment (which transformed the level of comfort, as the steering wheels do not move at all), a passenger's airbag and remote central locking. The Corsa Cs had the issue where water would leak into the passenger footwell if left for any length of time, and this one was no exception. General Motors used to give driving schools a healthy discount on Corsas, which is why they were so popular, I think. Excellent review, definitely livens things up a lot if you are able to go for a drive!
@TwinCam
@TwinCam 4 жыл бұрын
Yep, this one has a height adjusting seat, which is why it can somewhat compensate for the lack of steering column adjustment. In terms of the water leak, they all do that, sir! (including this one).

It’s good enough for me and apparently this one somehow seems more basic even though mine dates back to 2004 and it’s a 1.0 and it’s black and I think I made the right choice it certainly works very well and you just showed how well made this really is especially for something quite basic but I noticed this one actually has manual mirror adjustments the ones on mine are actually electronic so I guess mine isn’t quite as basic as it seems but I did have to replace the radio as it came with some kind of radio you’d get in Halfords but I replaced it with its original radio it would normally come with

Redone all the brake lines and am getting Corsa alloys on soon. Cured the infamous footwell leaks(thank the maker for KZbin vids) and now he's got Aircon (standard on the Design) and SXI add-ons. I've always had a soft spot for Vauxhalls. They seem to have paid more attention to 'ergonomics'. Things are where they should be. Your hands fall naturally to the controls, no need to stretch, twist fiddle or look, for where they are. This unfortunately, cannot be said for French cars, where function is eclipsed by form. This lack of 'quirkyness' unfortunately makes them appear dull. I think you are right that they appeal to those, who are not neccessarily petrol heads. You just get in it and go somewhere, without fuss. But I admire the engineering and thought that's gone into them.

I have the Opel Corsa C 1.2 Twinport which I guess is exactly the same car as the Vauxhall Corsa mostly. It's an A to B car and the plus point is mainly that it's cheap to own. Tax, insurance, low fuel consumption and for spare parts mostly. I have airbags for driver and passenger, electric steering power, electric adjustable and heated rear mirrors, AC and ABS and some anti slip function I could be without. I live in Stockholm and can't see any reason to have a big fast car with big engine and high costs for tax and insurance. What's the point when you spend half the time in queue anyhow? You can turn off that the cd/radio starts when you start the car. Just took me 2 years to find out :). In Sweden we say "Lagom", meaning: not so good but not so bad either. That's Opel Corsa. Lagom. So, it's perfect for a Swedish guy. :)

I actually like the styling, centre stack definitely reminds me of the Saturn Astra (Opel, Vauxhall), especially the radio controls. I assume most purchased this to get to point A to point B without fuss, hence the compromises you pointed out. Another brilliant video, and observation! Thank you very much!

Great video Ed - agree with everything you said- Drove one of these for 7 yrs with no probs- except I'd take one of these over a clio or anything french because of the vastly superior GM build quality.- I fear for Vauxhall/ Opels of future now that they are owned by Peugeot e.g too close positioning of accelerator+ brake pedals in particular.

👍 I had 2 of these. The range was facelifted in 2005…the one in the video is a twin port so is a face lifted model. My first was an early 2000 3dr 1.2 Base spec. The other was a facelift 2005 1.2 SXI 5dr. The trim is a little better on the facelift and with a sporty finish on the SXI…different gear lever, steering wheel, better front seats. Despite being a 1.2 like the Base model, the SXI was more sporty to drive mainly due to different gearing. The poverty spec I had didn’t inc ABS, whereas the later model did. I recommend getting it with ABS….big difference in an emergency despite still having the same disc/drums. Steering….the pre facelift had regular electro-hydro assistance whereas the facelift got all electric steering…..be aware, the electric type used in the later models is WORSE…devoid of feel, and more prone to fail. The steering was the main reason I got rid of it. I also test drive a pre facelift corsa 1.4 2002 automatic (proper automatic not the semi EasyTronic system) which made a lot of noise. Very disappointing. No auto lockup? I also had the opportunity to drive a 2000yr 1.0 Yaris and 2002 1.3 Yaris….those maybe more reliable, but they are way smaller than these corsas & in manual form the Yaris is horrible to drive - like a car 10 years older.

I had one for my first car 4 years ago i had the 2002 1.0 3 cylinder with 60 BHP and it was fairly okay to drive, the engine did sound like abit of a loud sowing machine and the clutch was really unforgiving, to get a smooth drive and to not stall. if you could drive that car you could quite honestly drive any car. (albeit the cars clutch was on its way out). i totally agree with you it wasnt exciting to drive but at the same time it was just nice and it gave me 100% pleasure and reliability of driving for 2 years until i bought myself a new 1.4Turbo Corsa E, which felt like a Rolls Royce to drive and thats why i believe getting a cheap car for your first car is best as it keeps costs down and makes it feel so rewarding when you save and move onto your next car! excellent video by the way!

I had what I believe to be the Corsa B model 1.2 GLS registered new in 1999. I owned it from 2004 until 2017. One if the best cars I have ever owned with hardly giving any problems in all that time and took me miles in the last year's I owned it and never ever let me down once. It was still perfect mechanically with good strong engine clutch and gear box. Unfortunately it failed the mot quite miserably in 2017 with the usual under body and sill corrosion which rendered it un echonimical to repair given its 18 years of age and the really sad decision to scrap her. I decided to stick with vauxhall based on how well the Corsa had served me and given I really needed something a little bigger opted for a Meriva. This hasn't served me so well unfortunately with the All so common power steering issue which to put right is apparently expensive. Intermittent sun roof leak 😏 Air con never has worked and occasionally does a weird thing on start up where it will start and then cuts out bringing the spanners up on the dash but then when you re start it it's fine. Unsure if this may be something to do with a replacement key I had to obtain. Don't think I will have such a long relationship with this one 😂

Far more reliable than a Clio though, GM cars of early 2000s were well made. I had a Clio of this generation and was dealing with multiple oil leaks, engine management warnings and all sorts of other broken things still with less than 80k on clock. I have a mk5 astra from this generation now and it's a great little car. No issues with 105k on the clock.

Great video.. The Corsa is a nice car, i thought about buying one, good looks and not bad interior, but inside it just didnt crack it for me, when i was down sizing i wanted a real special supermini.. But yeah the Corsa is well proven and a major brand so a safe buy.. And yes the alloys are smart as is the design of the car..

My grandfather had a 2002 1.2 model which I had to drive a couple of times after he died. At the time I owned a MK1 Skoda Fabia vRS and found the Corsa a little too relaxed by comparison. Decent car for most people, but not one I'd have picked.

Cracking little car, but the bulkhead water leaks, around the brake servo, are a pain in the @rse. Interior never was VAG quality and they are noisy, but they don't rust like the Ford's. Although slow, I loved the sound of the 3 cylinder engine. Corsa Breeze you've got there - same as we had 😁
@TwinCam
@TwinCam 4 жыл бұрын
As expected, this one is a colander. The interior quality is exactly what I'd expect to be honest, but it is built better than I'd expect. Even with the water ingress, you're right about the rust. They're galvanised!

@@TwinCam yeah, mine went back to the main dealer 3 times, and it had still started leaking again when I sold it. They had a 12 year anti-rust warranty, and they do seem to have got that part right. Pity the Corsa B wasn't as rust proof - although mine did last 16 years and was still a cracking little motor.

My Corsa B seemed to be pretty rust-free at 15 years old (apart from where a tiny section of paint on the tailgate had been scraped back to bare metal, and so a teeny spot of rust had started to form). Mind you, this was in New Zealand's North Island (where the car was called a Holden Barina).

Hmm, i think i have same problem with radio on my dad's 2005 Opel Combo. You should go to settings, press arrow right to switch to system, use up and down arrows to the point when Ign.Logic ON appears, and use arrows left or right to select off. Then wait a few seconds, and it shoud go back to audio source, like a radio or cd. Sorry for english, second language :)
