People like to moan about Doug Yule in the band, but just listen to how strong this sounds. It's a band at the height of their powers live. You know they just had to be on that stage at that moment doing that song. It's why I first picked up a guitar.

I’ve read somewhere that Sterling Morrison said at bigger venues the band were able to turn it up even further. They were kind of scaling it back at the Matrix because it was a small nightclub.

My VERY favorite VU song. I like the Val Valentin mix of the studio version best. Lou's singing on that breaks my heart every time. While the vocal melody is truncated here, this version has such intense guitars, it's almost incomprehensible. Sterling Morrison's wrist bones must have been laced with Adamantium. Ordinary humans can't just _do_ that. They'd hurt themselves!

What's that longer version video with the psychedelic visuals and go-go dancers? It seems to be possibly a live performance but there was no crowd noise. They must have been mesmerized. Anyway, that one puts this version to shame. Mr. Yule's masterpiece performance was jaw dropping.

That one is on the album 1969: The velvet Underground Live. It was a live double album of the Matrix shows from 1969. Recently they released a box set of the complete Matrix shows and it includes both versions.

I have a question for serious VU fans. Which guitar is Lou and which is Sterling? In the right channel I can hear muted rhythm and in the left is more power cords. Any ideas? These are the things that keep me up at night.
