Africa is home to many amazing venomous snakes. This continent has many ecosystems. We will explore deserts, savannas and rainforests of sub-Saharan Africa. This first episode is about venomous snakes living in deserts. Kalahari desert and other dry regions of southwester Africa are home to deadly Cape cobras (Naja nivea). You will see several color morphs, including a stunning yellow cobra. This snake will fight with meerkats! This episode also shows 3 species of dwarf adders, the Horned adder (Bitis caudalis), the Many-horned adder (Bitis cornuta) and the Namaqua dwarf adder (Bitis schneideri). Another small viper from arid regions of Africa is the Northeast African carpet viper (Echis pyramidum). East Africa is also inhabited by the colorful Red spitting cobra (Naja pallida). You will see this cobra spit venom! This episode includes a scene of venom extraction and interview about the snakebite topic. Wait for the end and don't miss various color morphs of Puff adder (Bitis arietans) and desert Boomslangs (Dispholidus typus).

As a Herpetologist I feel immediately compelled to grab my pillstom tongs, snake hooks and pillow cases and go collecting. At one time I've had most of the African desert species of venomous snakes and held in captivity for husbandry and propagation at the Zoo I worked at in Louisiana. Puff Adders, Egyptian Banded Cobra, Cape Cobra and the Desert Horned Viper to name a few as well as venomous snakes from around the world. Crotalus, Vipera, Trimersurus and Bothrops as well as Ophiophagus we propagated in mass numbers to trade to other Zoos. Excellent video as I haven't been able to collect these species in their native habitat. Cudos, well done. Suggestion...when you have trouble tubing a snake...get a bigger diameter tube. Remember when handling Spitting Cobras to always don your faceshield, you don't wish to be blinded do you?

South African Vaccine Products make a mono-valent anti-venom for the Saw Scaled Viper, amongst others for Southern and other parts of Africa. There is a shortage of anti-venom in South Africa currently. There is a 5 year supply of venom, but the issue is the hyperimmunization of horses and more importantly the processing thereafter I believe!

Thankyou for your kind reply. The last encounter I had was with a Cape Cobra. I shared the inside of a house, out in the Karoo with it. It was in the back of a cast iron wood stove. It was removed with a long feather duster. It was not a nice experience as it kept trying to attack me. I would say that it will now have a mortal fear of feather dusters. Extraordinary. Very well done! My only suggestion would be to speed up your narration just a touch to a more normal speaking tempo. At least in this format, we aren't likely to be taking notes. Where I live in the Western Cape we have the following: 1 - Cape Cobras, 2 - Naja Nigricollis (Woodi)*, or Naja nigricincta woodi*, 3 - Berg Adders, 4 - Puff Adders, & 5 - Boomslangs. *= name changed? And I have had encounters with all of them. 1, 10 + encounters. 2, 3 encounters, 3, 3 encounters, 4, 10+ encounters, 5, 10 + encounters. 3:26............And Fynbos is pronounced, Fane like in pain boss. And not Fin, as in sharks fin.
