In this talk from our 2009 Deep in History Conference, Coming Home Network founder and president Marcus Grodi looks at the question of Christian authority. Who has the right to teach and interpret Scripture? Who gets to say what the Bible really means, especially in regard to its more challenging passages? Marcus looks at the question of Christian authority in light of I Timothy 3:14-15, where St. Paul refers to the Church as the "pillar and bulwark of the truth," and asks the hard question that every Christian must ask: How do I know if my take on Scripture is the right one?

Amen to that. As a protestant I to saw the problem with protestantism, & why do protestant churches say every diff denomination is the same in beliefs, that they all believe in the same essentials, & believe in Jesus Christ as r saviour, & not Mary. but that's not true @all, they don't believe on the essentials of the faith, and they all teach a diff gospel. then they all use the same verse for their church, that if anybody teaches a diff gospel let him be accursed. I grew up a Protestant, and i still am technically, bc I'm not baptized in the Catholic Church yet, but I remember one day my father told me you know who teaches the true gospel, it is the Baptist Church, and I looked at him and I said yeah but which Baptist Church Dad, and he just stayed quiet, and couldn't answer me. So i started listening to Catholicism, on how they interpret scriptures, I realized that it's not that people don't read the Bible, is that they all have a diff interpretation of the Bible, that's the problem. plus they cant see that the church proceeds the New Testament scriptures, so the church was built first, and then the New Testament scriptures were written second, so sola scriptura is a self refuting argument. Lord bless u 💯🙏🏼

I think a large part of the confusion came about because in the Bible, we used poetry to describe a scene that was not spoken as a poem. Jesus did not say, " though art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church".... What he said in aramaic was..."turning to Simon, Jesus said, Simon, you are the Rock and on you, The Rock, I will build my Church..." It's a much stronger statement when translated fully into English, without the Latin and Greek. After all, Saint Peter translated into English means..."Holy Rock"....or in better English .." The Holy Rock"

I like how it says it in French, it reads "Tu est Pierre, et que sur cette pierre je bâtirai mon Église", in French, the name Pierre is masculine, and the word to mean rock is feminine. In French, it says "Thou art rock, and on this rock, I will build (futur simple) my Church. According to word reference, when pierre is used to mean rock, it can mean large rock, so, you don't really have the arguments in French you do in English. The version of the Bible I used for that is La Bible de Jérusalem.

Great video Mr Grodi, I can understand of what you spoke about when you mentioned about when you played basketball for your Lutheran church in a religious basketball play offs between religious groups, then you mentioned that you had friends in different denominations playing for there groups. And as I reflect on what you’ve said it brought to my mind of what I’ve seen with numerous family members and friends who are in different denominations, and having said that it reminds me of what Jesus said to his Apostles after leaving the temple and Jesus said to his Apostles beware that you not be led astray for I say to you that many shall come teaching in my name saying I am he the Christ and teach many in my name and lead many astray do not follow them, and what a coincidence that in this present day and time look at the numerous different denominations that teach and preach about Jesus whooo weee there’s obviously a connection of Jesus had told his Apostles from so far back that seems fulfilled from centuries back?🤔

1 Timothy 3:1-2,5,8,12,15 [1]It is a faithful saying: if a man desires the episcopate, he desires a good work. [2]Therefore, it is necessary for a bishop to be beyond reproach, the husband of one wife, sober, prudent, gracious, chaste, hospitable, a teacher, [5]For if a man does not know how to lead his own house, how will he take care of the Church of God? [8]Similarly, deacons must be chaste, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not pursuing tainted profit, [12]Deacons should be the husband of one wife, men who lead their own children and their own houses well. [15]But, if I am delayed, you should know the manner in which it is necessary to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the Church of the living God, the pillar and the foundation of truth.

Mathew 18 is not a scripture we use it as. God is in the midst when I’m alone and no one is there but me and the presence of God Mathew 18 is talking about offenses in the church. God is saying he will be in the midst of that when you go to your brother to clear up an offense Grab your bible and read it in its intended context

No Jesus is telling people to reconcile with those who you sin against and for those who sin against you to reconcile with you. This is why Jesus told them the parable of the Lord who forgave his servants debt to him. Then that servant didn’t forgive a debt of another servant that owed them. The lord then punished that servant for not showing mercy. Why would that parable be necessary if there was no need to reconcile sins when debt is already paid? Why did Jesus go on to say the so the Lord shall treat you. Matthew 18:23-35 (RSVCE): 23 “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; 25 and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; 33 and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all his debt. 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.” Before this Jesus says quite plainly that they need to forgive trespasses in the Our Father prayer. Then reinforces this need to forgive sins amongst each other and with the church if reconciliation cannot occur between the two Matthew 6:9-13 (RSVCE): 9 Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread; 12 And forgive us our debts, As WE ALSO HAVE FORGIVEN our debtors; 13 And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. This is a lot of talk about reconciling. Why? Because Jesus asked you to follow him. That means assuming the characteristics of God. To show love and mercy to those who do wrong to you and for them to show you mercy even when you don’t deserve it and vice versa. This is the second commandment. The apostles talk about reconciliation in the NT after Jesus ascended. Paul most plainly says that the church has the ministry of reconciliation in his letters to the Corinthians and even chastises them later for taking each other to civil court for wrongs against each other rather than going before the church to confess their sins and seek reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 (RSVCE): All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to God Paul calls it the ministry of reconciliation… we (apostles) are ambassadors of Christ to act with God’s mercy for the forgiveness of sins. Here you can see Paul annoyed that the Corinthians continue to act like gentiles and not Christian’s when they don’t take their sins to the church to reconcile 1 Corinthians 6:1-6 (RSVCE): 1 When one of you has a grievance against a brother, does he dare go to law before the unrighteous instead of the saints? 2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? 3 Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, matters pertaining to this life! 4 If then you have such cases, why do you lay them before those who are least esteemed by the church? 5 I say this to your shame. Can it be that there is no man among you wise enough to decide between members of the brotherhood, 6 but brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers? Protestants have done away with this Christ teaching. That is a step away from following Christ by asking those you have directly hurt for forgiveness and also to forgive those who should ask you for mercy.

What I have noticed is that churches that call themselves “Bible believing” tend to believe significantly less of the Bible than Catholics. 1 Peter 3:21? Nah. Mathew 26:26? Metaphor. Romans 6:4? Symbolic. 2 Thessalonians 2:15? He only meant until the writing of the last book of the New Testament. 1 Corinthians 3:13-15? Too vague to draw any solid conclusions. Revelation 12:17? That’s not about Mary. Hebrews 12:1? They are not actually witnessing you, dude. James 2:24? You just don’t understand what he means. On and on and on.

[8]But if anyone, even we ourselves or an Angel from Heaven, were to preach to you a gospel other than the one that we have preached to you, let him be anathema. Marcus Grodi's position suffers from a logical inconsistency. In spite of what he says, he "leans on his own understanding" (Proverbs) and appeals to biblical authority, specifically, 1 Timothy 3:15 (the church is "the pillar and bulwark of the truth"), to arrive at the view that the Catholic Church is the authority on interpretation of the Scriptures. In effect he says, " I use MY judgement to interpret 1 Timothy 3:15 and, having done that, I leave it to the Catholic Church to tell me what the rest of the Bible says because I don't have the ability and the confidence to interpret the rest of it myself"! Marcus Grodi also overlooks that, when we read the New Testament, we are taught by the New Testament Church, so, for example, when we read and try to understand 1 Timothy, we are taught by the apostle Paul directly. Therefore, the "sola scriptura" vs. church authority dichotomy is wrong. The true dichotomy is between the authority of the first century Church that produced the New Testament scriptures (who also interpreted the Old Testament for us) and that of all other professed churches that followed it.

You know most of this name of other church some they are catholic first being baptized in the 3 Holly trinity The sign of the cross The Father. The Son and The Holly Spirits .And you are so right there is only 1 Jesus Christ yet people decided each other into group of religion. That those who claim to be Christians the other name of group saying they are the only one can go to heaven.they are save.they are going to be raptured and etc.And if you are in the same group with them they only call their own group bro.and sisters and if they know. Your catholic they won't call you sisters and brothers and they would say Catholic is evil church.the statue and the believers. If only they understand only catholics follow the scriptures of the Bible Jesus said this is how you pray The Our Father that's what he teach to his disciples and others. And only Catholics bow down to the Holly spirits of Jesus Christ as a king of heaven we bent our knees as a respect to the Holly spirits of Jesus Christ who suffer and die on the cross for our sins and the sins of the world. What I like about the Catholic church every one is welcome and it's all about the prayers and there is some evidence according to others who experienced it that some of the Eucharist did some miracles that truly the Holly spirits of Jesus Christ is present when the priest blessed the host as body of Christ and the wine as blood of Christ it was the teaching of Jesus Christ to his 12 disciples the last supper He said to his disciples eat this bread as my body as a reminder of him and the wine as his blood as a reminder of him.it means he blessed those bread or host for us to take it that we believed on him and trust him as our saviour.as a 3 Holly trinity The father The Son and The Holly Spirits.that blessed us to take away our sins to forgive us and etc and for to believed that he is The Way.The Thruth and The life that's what those host is all about the priest just follow the teaching of the Bible the teaching of Jesus to his deciples .And about the statue this theologian priest explain it forgot his name he said the reason there's a statue in the Catholic church is because long time ago there is only few bible then and some doesn4 know how to read and understand the Bible so what the catholic church did long time ago they bring the life of the bible by making a statue they bring it to life so others understand the story of the Bible and some of the statue I believed it was made to represent the blessed mother Mary who appear to the 3 children back in 1917 .100 years past now the blessed mother Mary appear in the town of Fatima and I believed some of Jesus statue they copy it to the the shroud of Turin God bless every ione

The Catholics like to use Timothy 3:15. This man is totally misunderstanding what that means.the Mormons can take that verse 2 and say you'll see where the church where the correct teaching where the bulwark and the truth. Christ is the bulwark and Christ is the church. He is the embodiment of the truth. Those who wrote scripture where under the guidance of God's hand and God would protect his word through those writings and the truth. The Church of God is the teacher of the word. But those who are called by God and elected those are the church. Christ being a bulwark and the church members to small stones of the foundation. If a church speaks the truth that is what that verse means. Not a church that perverts the truth. For any denomination can claim that they are the true church for guidance. I look at scripture alone for truth

Where do you get your scriptures? If it's the Holy Bible, then it was developed by Catholics. It was Protestants that removed some books from the original Bible. There was no Bible until around the 4th century. How do you think they got the truth before then? From the traditions. 2 Thessalonians 2:13-15 (NRSVCE): But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.

When Luther saw the atrocities of the church being a priest.. Luther brought this to the attention of the Pope. Quest the pope would not hear it. If you saw a child being beat would you not protest??that is simply Luther did he brought the revival back the original Church to its original roots.well I myself will not follow Luther because he is a man he was on the right track because the lies of the Catholic church was too much for him to handle. Selling indulgences. Worshipping idols. The list goes on. St. Peter's basilica church was built by indulgences the sale of salvation.!!! You cannot make it up.Satan has dissuaded and mixed many people up with different denominations.the true church is all of those who believe in Jesus Christ as their lord and savior who love God with all thy heart mind and soul. And love one another as Christ loved the Church.it is a simple gospel for everyone all these traditions and sacraments and everything else throw it out the window it is not important. The important is that Christ died for your sins and that is a free gift.that you are powerless over your sins and there is nothing you can do no marriage no good works that can lead you to eternal life. There is no such place as purgatory as this is a made-up concept.Jesus did not tell the thief on the cross who would have required many many millions of years in purgatory perhaps?? Someday after you serve your time in purgatory you will be with me in Paradise. That is not what he said he said this day you shall be with me in Paradise. Does this not contradict Catholic teaching and it's infallibility??? There is no such thing as a denomination the church is universal. The true universal church is those that are called by God and elected by God to be the petro's of the bulwark. Who is Christ the foundation. Christ to the power of the Holy Spirit brings those whom he chooses to be used for his glorious purpose

Peter was not the first pope all of the apostles were given the commission to go out into the world and preach the truth. The truth church was made up of small groups of people in different parts of the world. There was different names of the churches and groups. Rome was the powerful empire that persecuted Christians.in a nutshell Constantine came to power and Sora way to bring people back under one religious belief of Rome. Constantine, by the way was a sun worshipper. Ace are a vision in the sky a burning cross that said conquer this. Clearly a vision of Satan to mislead. He brought all of the religions of the Roman empire together. Including the worship of isis. Replaced it with Mary. The Catholic Church Roots starts in the year 3 12 through 325 a d.
