Thank you so much for a respectful and very truthful presentation on Luther. It would seem impossible to condense his life, theology and historical impact into one hour. But Dr. Thigpen has done so...giving anyone who wants to pursue Luther in more detail an excellent base to build on. Irony used in the final analysis of Luther's "new" theology provides a fitting condemnation of Luther's impact on faith. This should be required viewing for anyone studying the Reformation and Luther. Thanks, again!

I am a Protestant starting RCIA in a couple of months. Luther is highly revered in Evangelical circles. I even have a ML toy of him holding his thesis. As I started reading about the Church Fathers, I’ve also learned so much about him and now embarrassed at so blindly believing without researching him myself. What a pitiful human. And what damage and destruction he wrought to generations of the world.

Catholic Christi I wouldn’t say only. But that’s otherwise generally what I’ve noticed. Rolando Velásquez Do you know what Marcus Grodi is doing now? The Coming Home Network, with Scott Hahn, Steven Ray, Tim Staples, Trent Horn etc. All converts, listen to them maybe you’ll learn something. If it was one protestant sect and one bible maybe I give Luther some credit, but there are nearly 40.000 sects and none of them agree with one another , is that what you call better? You can give people the Bible, but they put different interpretation in the same verse. Luther removed books from the Bible, but still managed to change his mind after a year and much criticism from his friends return the book of James (even in a New Testament)? Luther got corrupted from the heads in Germany and the king in England because they didn’t like the Pope. Catholic Church explains the Bible in every day mass after reading from the OT, acts including the letters and from the Gospel.

@Rolando Velásquez I couldn't disagree more with your conclusion. If you are judging the actions of people to measure the validity of an organization then your argument falls apart. As mentioned above the reformation has extreme amounts of confusion and division. Yet the Catholic Church still stands. To your point about the Bible, yes it potentially a good thing everyone has a copy but having a Bible does not garuntee salvation. While the actions of the people of the church is bad, the consensus is still that when you study history you cease to be Protestant, if you're academically studying. Now if your empathetically studying history and looking to be offended and searching superficially then yes you will become Protestant and more than likely remain Protestant. Protestant theology stands on the shoulder of the Catholic church. Without us there would be no Bible and without us the truth of Christ would be lost. How do I know? By just looking at the current state of affairs within Protestantism. So unfortunately Protestantism may have done some good in correcting the practices of the Catholic Church but it in now way reformed anything else.

St. Paul meant that the CALL to Christ is not earned by works and even while we are yet deep in sin and have done no good works, Christ calls us. St. Paul writes that Abraham was called BEFORE he was circumcised. But after accepting his call we have to do good works of course. Paul wrote in response to Jewish converts to Christianity who wanted to exclude non-Jews from following Christ because Jews believed non-Jews were doomed and not eligible for heaven anyway because they were terrible sinners and did not follow the Jewish law. St. Paul writes that even Abraham was called BEFORE he followed any law of circumcision etc.

The high-priestly prayer of Jesus the night of the Last Supper. Here are the first words of the Lord: "Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are one." God is, in his innermost nature, a community of love, and God’s purpose vis-à-vis the world is to draw it into his unity. God is a great gathering force. Jesus continues: "I do not ask that you take them out of the world but that you keep them from the Evil One." Precisely because the world is so opposed to the way of Jesus, it is always tempting for Christians more or less to flee, to seek to live in private enclaves where we can cultivate the life of discipleship.

Like Arius before him, and Mohammad, and Joseph Smith to follow, Luther follows the tried-and-true formula: if you discover "the truth" that "everyone else got wrong" for x-hundred years, but you lose debates with the orthodox theologians, take to the streets and recruit the masses until you've found enough people (largely friends and folks in your family) who agree with you, then demand legitimacy from the Church based on "the proof of your truth based on the witness of the Spirit confirmed in your followers." Works every time

Luther never wanted to start a 'new' church or condemn the Roman Catholic Church. He wanted to 'Reform' it and bring it back to the Word. As a Lutheran Christian, I love many of the Catholic traditions and teachings but I wish someone could convince me that the Pope (Bishop of Rome) is in a direct historical line from St Peter. I believe that the interpretation of the 'Keys' from Matthew is important, but does it mean 'Peter' is the rock on which Christ builds His Church or is it Peter's Confession of Jesus as Savior, the Rock? An age old debate of bible scholars.

@@FAMA-18 1. Regarding Simon Peter as the 'rock': A. In the Gospel of John 1:42, at the beginning of His public ministry, Jesus gave Simon the name Cephas, a transliteration of the Aramaic work Kephas, which means 'rock'. Although John's gospel was written in Greek, Jesus was speaking in Aramaic. Peter is the Greek male translation form of the Aramaic word 'rock'. B. John 1:42, (ESV): "Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter). C. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus was making a play on words (a double meaning) that combined (A) the person of Simon with (B) Simon's confession of faith in Christ's divinity, in effect saying 'you are a rock and on this rock.' 2. Regarding apostolic succession from Peter is the following: A. From Wikipedia: Irenaeus (/ɪrɪˈneɪəs/; Greek: Εἰρηναῖος Eirēnaios; c. 130 - c. 202 AD) was a Greek bishop noted for his role in guiding and expanding Christian communities in the southern regions of present-day France and, more widely, for the development of Christian theology by combating heterodox or Gnostic interpretations of Scripture as heresy and defining proto-orthodoxy. Originating from Smyrna, he had seen and heard the preaching of Polycarp, who in turn was said to have heard John the Evangelist,[5] and thus was the last-known living connection with the Apostles. Chosen as bishop of Lugdunum, now Lyon, his best-known work is Against Heresies. B. From the New Advent website, Irenaeus' Against Heresies, Book III, Chapter 3, No. 1-3 (written c. 180 AD): (1) It is within the power of all, therefore, in every Church, who may wish to see the truth, to contemplate clearly the tradition of the apostles manifested throughout the whole world; and we are in a position to reckon up those who were by the apostles instituted bishops in the Churches, and [to demonstrate] the succession of these men to our own times; those who neither taught nor knew of anything like what these [heretics] rave about. For if the apostles had known hidden mysteries, which they were in the habit of imparting to "the perfect" apart and privily from the rest, they would have delivered them especially to those to whom they were also committing the Churches themselves. For they were desirous that these men should be very perfect and blameless in all things, whom also they were leaving behind as their successors, delivering up their own place of government to these men; which men, if they discharged their functions honestly, would be a great boon [to the Church], but if they should fall away, the direst calamity. (2) Since, however, it would be very tedious, in such a volume as this, to reckon up the successions of all the Churches, we do put to confusion all those who, in whatever manner, whether by an evil self-pleasing, by vainglory, or by blindness and perverse opinion, assemble in unauthorized meetings; [we do this, I say,] by indicating that tradition derived from the apostles, of the very great, the very ancient, and universally known Church founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious apostles, Peter and Paul; as also [by pointing out] the faith preached to men, which comes down to our time by means of the successions of the bishops. For it is a matter of necessity that every Church should agree with this Church, on account of its preeminent authority [potiorem principalitatem]. (3) The blessed apostles, then, having founded and built up the Church, committed into the hands of Linus the office of the episcopate. Of this Linus, Paul makes mention in the Epistles to Timothy. To him succeeded Anacletus; and after him, in the third place from the apostles, Clement was allotted the bishopric. This man, as he had seen the blessed apostles, and had been conversant with them, might be said to have the preaching of the apostles still echoing [in his ears], and their traditions before his eyes. Nor was he alone [in this], for there were many still remaining who had received instructions from the apostles. In the time of this Clement, no small dissension having occurred among the brethren at Corinth, the Church in Rome dispatched a most powerful letter to the Corinthians, exhorting them to peace, renewing their faith, and declaring the tradition which it had lately received from the apostles, proclaiming the one God, omnipotent, the Maker of heaven and earth, the Creator of man, who brought on the deluge, and called Abraham, who led the people from the land of Egypt, spoke with Moses, set forth the law, sent the prophets, and who has prepared fire for the devil and his angels. From this document, whosoever chooses to do so, may learn that He, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, was preached by the Churches, and may also understand the apostolic tradition of the Church, since this Epistle is of older date than these men who are now propagating falsehood, and who conjure into existence another god beyond the Creator and the Maker of all existing things. To this Clement there succeeded Evaristus. Alexander followed Evaristus; then, sixth from the apostles, Sixtus was appointed; after him, Telephorus, who was gloriously martyred; then Hyginus; after him, Pius; then after him, Anicetus. Soter having succeeded Anicetus, Eleutherius does now, in the twelfth place from the apostles, hold the inheritance of the episcopate. In this order, and by this succession, the ecclesiastical tradition from the apostles, and the preaching of the truth, have come down to us. And this is most abundant proof that there is one and the same vivifying faith, which has been preserved in the Church from the apostles until now, and handed down in truth.

1. Yes, and Martin Luther added the word 'alone' (Allein) in his translation of Romans 3:28 to read: "We hold that a man is justified by faith 'alone' (Allein) apart from the works of the law." 2. Here's what Luther wrote when challenged about the addition of this word to the sacred text: A. "If your papist worries you about the word 'alone', just tell him plainly that Dr. Martin Luther will have it so, and says: 'Papist and donkey are one and the same thing; sic volo, sic jubeo, stat pro ratione voluntas.' ["I wish it, I command it. Let my will take the place of a reason." (Luther quoting the Latin from 1st-2nd AD author Juvenal's satirical poems Satyrai)] For we must not be the pupils or disciples of the papists, but on the contrary their masters and judges. We ought to swagger and hammer on their donkey-heads, and, as Paul challenged the sanctimonious fools of his day, so I will also challenge these donkeys of mine." [G.W. Bromiley, Thomas Cranmer Theologian (London, 1956), p.36.] B. "I am sorry now that I did not add the word 'all' so that it would read 'without all works of all laws', and thus ring out loudly and completely. However, it shall stand as it is in my New Testament, and though all the Papist-donkeys go mad about it, they shall not move me from this." [A. Dr. Thigpen takes quote after quote in a sensational way without trying to actually understand Luther's true doctrines. Read Luther's explanation to the Ten Commandments, "We should fear and love God that we lead a pure and decent life in words and actions, and that husband and wife love and honor each other." This presenter has no idea of how Luther made a distinction between Law and Gospel. I don't think he knows what it is. (The devil is always rubbing the Christian's conscience in his sin with the desire that we despair. Until we realize that we are true sinners we will not realize that we need a true Savior. It is not a call to sin. It is a call to repent. Jesus died for sinners - not for people who cover their sin by doing things that are prescribed by human rules instead of the Word.) Yes, Luther used brash and vulgar language. He was a sinner. We don't condone it. Lutherans don't worship Luther. They follow the Book of Concord - not written by Luther. Dr. also fails to mention that Luther quoted many church fathers as did Martin Chemnitz who came right after Luther. The problem they had was when the fathers and the councils contradicted each other. So Lutherans go back to the Scriptures as the ultimate authority. Luther spoke against enthusiasts who arose in Germany and claimed personal revelation. Luther did not claim personal revelation. He was called to teach the WORD at WIttenberg, and it was the Word that showed him who Christ truly is. Again, he wanted to be genuinely catholic - and the Catholic Church would not repent of their false doctrine and teachings. Luther said faith doesn't lie on the heart as a duck on water, but as heated water becomes warm. He didn't claim that faith didn't change the person on the inside, only that whatever change there is DOESN'T JUSTIFY. I could go on . . . Dr. Thigpen doesn't get it. Like I said, he uses Luther's colorful language as an entertainment and blames Luther for all of the immorality in Germany. I wonder if there was any immorality in Rome at the time? Check your history.

+Joel Pankow >"without trying to actually understand Luther's true doctrines" Why even follow _Luther's_ doctrines? Why not the perennial Catholic faith that well preceded him and goes right back to the start, to the unanimous Christian interpretation since the Apostles? "He who does accept my doctrine, cannot be saved" Yeah, right. That _is_ what a false teacher would say. Why do you, like Luther, make this absolute distinction between works and faith, when "faith is perfect by works", and "faith without works is dead", and "man is justified by works, not by faith alone". Do you forget that Christ said, "If you live Me, keep My commandments?", "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord', will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven". Or more explicitly, John writes, "Anyone who says, 'I know Him', but not not keep His commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him". The contradiction between the two (faith and works) is non-existent. When Paul talks about" the works of the law", he talks against works, _earning_ you salvation. In addition to the context making this ABUNDANTLY clear, he writes elsewhere clearly, "God is not unjust. He will not forget your work and the love you have shown for His name as you have ministered to the saints and continue to do so. We want each of you to show the same diligence *to the very end, so that your hope may be fully assured*." He also says, "Without peace and *holiness, no one will see the Lord*." Again, "If I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing." This alone disproves faith alone. Charity is always active. God bless.

Libera Nos Domine Faith without works is dead, this is true. Works justify our faith in the eyes of men. Faith in Christ's work justifies us in the eyes of God. Outward works are reflections of inner faith in Christ, but they do not save. Luther was never against works. He was against man made Catholic works and the idea that works could make us right in God's eyes. "All our righteous acts are like filthy rags," Isaiah wrote. Luther's doctrines - yes - I should have said Biblical doctrine. Luther wasn't trying to break away from the church, he was trying to reform it according to the Bible, not according to councils which declared doctrines - which were contradictory in themselves. Catholic doctrine is unanimous at one time and then decides to have a different and contradictory unanimous doctrine a hundred years later. So much for unanimity.

Did you not hear in this video, Luther condemning works outright? >"He was against man made Catholic works" Could you elaborate on what this consists of? >"All our righteous acts are like filthy rags," Isaiah wrote" "For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds like filthy rags" Isaiah 64:6a is talking about works not being able to save you (from God's punishment in context), and works done in unrighteousness. This is unrelated to the works you've admitted are necessary, and which are worked in Christ (_John 15:1-6_ etc), and which _are_ pleasing to God (_Hebrews __13:16_ etc). If faith without works is dead, then I submit to you, they are not 'optional', but active. Wrought in grace through Christ. Never _earning_ the salvation it is being worked in, but a necessary fruit of it. I think your problem is claiming 'faith' is anything other than all those things taught us by Christ, such as doing good and being judged thereby, the most important tenet of which being that all of this is based on the grace and salvation given us through the Passion. I think by faith you seem to mean that this consists _only_ in assent or confidence in the work of Christ, and not _everything_ taught us by Christ, including the imperative to do good etc (remember the damning of those who did not feed the poor etc?) The Council of Trent, in its canons on Justification _rightly_, therefore, denounces such false doctrines as contradict Scripture: CANON IX. If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema. (James 2:17,24, Romans 6:16, etc) CANON XII. If any one saith, that justifying faith is nothing else but confidence in the divine mercy which remits sins for Christ’s sake; or, that this confidence alone is that whereby we are justified; let him be anathema. (James 2:19, 1 Corinthians 13:2 etc) >"Luther wasn't trying to break away from the church, he was trying to reform it according to the Bible" Luther is a man. He has absolutely 0 authority to conform any church to his fallible, and _NOVEL_ interpretation of Scripture and impose it on anyone. Neither does the Church. it just teaches what has always been believed. Also, reading the Bible alone, devoid of the _necessary) contexts in which it was formed is bound to end in all kinds of interpretations -- all equally valid, again, if devoid of that context. >"councils which declared doctrines - which were contradictory in themselves. Catholic doctrine is unanimous at one time and then decides to have a different and contradictory unanimous doctrine a hundred years later. " Could you cite an example? God bless
