The sound that Nick produces is unassailable. What a guitar player, it sad that most people who so called “know” guitarist haven’t heard of him. Absolutely the most underrated guitarist of all time.

It's a great sound but it's easily replicated, and his popularity or lack of popularity can be attributed to the fact he isn't a guitar-player's guitarist. The sound of the riff in the verse on this song is produced by playing a note against itself in an octave

Now you see if you listen to the lyrics, you can visualise someone holding up their hand to catch a butterfly, However the gesture of catching something in your hand can also look like the raised fist of solidarity and honour.... for all the men women and children that went before us on this earth and the ones who stand in front of us, ready to take on the baton and stand up for human rights. I reckon the verve are true loyalists to the people and would never forget where they came from.

It was an amazing day, especially if you came from Wigan - these things don't happen much in our town, so for a homegrown band to bring this incredible event - including Beck and John Martyn, of course (Beck in Wigan still blows my mind somewhat) - was a once in a lifetime (so far) happening. I had a Verve binge yesterday - just listened to their music for about three hours, from the first three albums and B sides. Afterwards I felt emotionally exhausted. I came to the conclusion that it's inevitable they kept splitting. Making music that deep and powerful must have been draining! For A Northern Soul they took ecstasy constantly during recording just to get into the right state of mind!
