A beautifully sincere number. Ashcroft's pain is very apparent here. The loss of love is one of the most crushing pains any human can experience. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. And yet it's something most of us must deal with at some point. Life, eh??

Ashcroft married his wife in 1995, the year this song came out. Many said it was about leaving a girlfriend (he denied this) as no one knew that Ashcroft had married, I think, no one knew for several years, he never spoke of it. I think this song is a love song about what he was deciding to do about love, because he says that "living with me is like keeping a fool." I find this one of the finest love songs in rock history. It is even erotic in its melancholy. He had a life. He wanted another life, too. And somehow he's managed to keep both all these years. He calls his wife, his "rock."

Wander thro' each charter'd street, Near where the charter'd Thames does flow, And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe. In every cry of every man, In every Infant's cry of fear, In every voice, in every ban, The mind-forg'd manacles I hear. How the Chimney-sweeper's cry Every blackning Church appalls; And the hapless Soldier's sigh Runs in blood down Palace walls. But most thro' midnight streets I hear How the youthful Harlot's curse Blasts the new-born Infant's tear, And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse.

Richard Ashcroft is up there were the likes of Weller and Noel Gallagher in my eyes as one of the all time great British song writers. And the rest of the band as players were absolutely flawless. This song gets me every single time for what it meant and still means to me to this day.

I wander lonely streets Behind where the old Thames does flow And in every face I meet Reminds me of what I have run for In every man, in every hand In every kiss, you understand That living is for other men I hope you too will understand I've gotta tell you my tale Of how I loved and how I failed I hope you understand These feelings should not be in the man In every child, in every eye In every sky, above my head I hope that I know So come with me in bed Because it's you and me, we're history There ain't nothing left to say When I will get you alone Maybe we could find a room Where we could see what we should do Maybe you know it's true Living with me's like keeping a fool In every man, in every hand In every kiss, you understand That living is for other men I hope you know that I am me, so come on I'm thinking about history And I'm living for history And I think you know about me Cause I am And one and one is two But three is company When you're thinking about the things you do And you're thinking about the things you do I wanna tell you my tale How I failed in love and jumped out on my bail Do you understand? There's more in a smile than in a hand In every sky, in every kiss There's one thing that you might have missed And why am I going to A place that now belongs to you But you were weak, and so am I Let's make it up, let's even try To live today, so why not smile Don't dream away your life Cause it is mine, it is mine Is that a crime? Is that a crime? This life is mine But the bed ain't made It's filled full of hope I've got a skin full of dope Oh the bed ain't made But it's filled full of hope I've got a skin full of dope

It was always round my mates house, 3 of us had all just split up with our girlfriends at the same time and we used to drink strong vodka and tonics, fat lines of coke, smoke ciggies until the sun came up and just carry right on through the day til the night came again. Messy but its what we had to do.....

I remember the first time I heard this album. Went to my weed dealers house and he was playing this. We did bong rips for 2 plays and then I drove to the record store to buy it. The Verve has been my favorite band ever since…

Wow.. comments dating back 11 years ago ! I'm clearly late to the party. A extremely melancholic & haunting intro then at 0:35 the almost subtle change to those "gorgeous & melodic" piano 🎹 chords. Dennis has shown to the world just what an amazing singer he is (& a truly talented genius at work in his songwriting ability) Yes, I know the production team in the recording studio had session musicians finish the gloss of a truly remarkable, in my opinion, masterpiece. Then, the decision to draft another tortured soul, "Taylor Hawkins" in.... Ultimately bringing a magnificent song to the public. An underated gem, essentially a failure to expose a written classic & a single that will never be given it's commercial lamentations.... Dennis, WE will keep your legacy alive through your songs x

this is a very moving song. the lyrics and the way it sounds. I love 90's music. so much authenticity. this band was really great and had a lot of unique songs. I can relate a lot to their music and it's a comfort to me to listen to it, especially in these uncertain times

Fun fact for anyone who didn't know: The clapping in this song (in the background, in time with the beat) was done by a man called Liam Gallagher. No-one knows who he was and he hasn't been heard from since this minor cameo.
