I had a very casual relationship with my digital illustration prof in art school at the height of the Mac vs. PC ad campaign. I primarily worked digitally and was a custom built PC user. 100% of the labs at the school were Mac, and I HATED them. I got into a Mac vs. PC conversation with that prof one day, and he went on about how Macs were just easier to use, blah blah, the normal talking points. "Yeah and you're paying out the nose for a fancy aluminum box with an apple on it with inferior hardware inside of it. I'll keep my PC that's three times stronger that I built for less than half the cost of those Macs, thanks." "But Macs are so much easier to use with zero maintenance and no having to worry about viruses. PCs have so much shit you have to do to keep them running well." "Antivirus software and setting your hard drive to defrag once every couple months isn't a monumental task." "But it's still shit you have to do." "Well yeah, but even your car will break down and stop running if you don't change the oil every so often." "..............goddammit." I won that one. Edited to add: Y'all can "hur-derp r/thathappened" about this silly little exchange all you want; it happened regardless. I don't know what on earth there would be to gain from lying about something so inconsequential when it's not even funny or around other people. We were in the parking lot between classes. Earlier versions of OS X seemed to be an attempt by Apple engineers to get a Mac experience on NextStep in a hurry, even if it meant bypassing the security features. I remember hearing about inbuilt apps that were made to run as setuid root, automatically changing the permissions of any files they touched, so ordinary user tasks would fail. If I remember correctly, even the Apple menu was running as setuid root and could be convinced to launch apps with the same root permissions! Fortunately it seems that Apple has fixed a lot of that kind of stuff over the years, but I do still wonder whether there are egregious security problems still residing in the underlying system courtesy of a hurried 1990s Apple coder...

Well anything below OS X has nothing to do with this current version. It was built from the ground up.
@nabagaca2 жыл бұрын
@@otherlego I think you may be confused, current versions of MacOS (and OS X) were built on the NextStep operating system (loosely), the operating system that was developed by NextStep, which Steve Jobs ran after he was fired from apple. What 3rdalbum is saying, is that while making NextStep more MacOS like, some things were rushed, and they fear that some of it might remain.
@3rdalbum2 жыл бұрын
As for the permissions problems, Apple shipped with Mac OS X a utility that would repair any messed-up permissions on system files. It's hard to see how permissions would get messed-up if the security system was working correctly - I've never had any equivalent problem on Linux unless I caused it myself. I doubt it's as much of a problem on OS X as it used to be. I'm sure it's not. Apple has done a lot of work on securing the operating system through better design.
@flyingyak82832 жыл бұрын
The file permissions issues were caused by the Classic Environment (the feature that let you run MacOS 9 software on OS X), as a consequence of getting a system and software that had no concept of permissions or file ownership to work well on a system that does have those things.

The only reason it does not get viruses is because not a lot of folks use it overall. The learning gap between Linux and most other oses, despite possibly being actually very small, is impossible for the average user of computers, same type to fall for scams and shit like that. This leads to devs for viruses not existing, and even if they did, they would face tougher people they would have to trick, since, while they may not be smart still, average Linux user is about.... 0.1% smarter than the average pc/Mac user at the very least. And I can say this as a Linux user myself! Infact, if Linux use becomes easier (IE:pre-installed in some way and just more apps can be used in it.) Then, viruses will start to properly appear, since it's taking a bit of the pie now, and thus getting to the general public who might not even know what the fuck a wifi is.

Then you move on to trying out things on the school LAN. I used to mess around at random internet cafes back then when internet wasn’t easily accessible. I’ve never heard of Leap, but I’ve heard of other Mac malware. Mac malware usually doesn’t have a ton of analysis or information about how it works, so Mac malware is still fairly obscure, however, it is still foolish to not have anti-malware software on your Mac and take proper precautions. I’ve been a Mac user for over a decade, and I do weekly backups to an offline external hard drive and have anti-malware protection. I also practice good computer security habits, like not executing a file if I am unsure of its source. While I believe XProtect is pretty robust, it’s only your first line of defense. Mac malware may be few and far between, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

I love my macs. Just got out of windows hell a year ago thank God. I'll never buy another windows box since I no longer work in IT. YAY! I love the beauty of *NIX behind it and the elegance of OSX and the design of the box. Yes, I'm a MacSnob and I love it.

I don't typically watch sponsored clips, but that pun just killed me, had to watch it for the sake of it. Great video though, loved it!
@lawndogmoon22 жыл бұрын
What do you do if the sponsorship is mentioned at the end of a video?
@kurthadron97202 жыл бұрын
@@lawndogmoon2 I appreciate creators who keep their sponsorships till the end, similar to Seytonic, I personally watch till the end if that is the case, however, mid-video placed sponsorships I automatically skip.

This video should be titled “The Very First Mac OS 10 virus”. nVIR was out in 1987.

Yeah, I've got a Pro because of a state program I was part of......They let me keep it because, by the time I left the program, it was a few years old....I remember quite vividly the tech guy basically giving me a gentle warning on this matter.....Yes, they're less susceptible, but that doesn't mean they're *immune* to viruses. A couple months later, he and I were chatting and he cheerily brought up how he found one on someone else's Pro.

Mac and Linux are not really safer than windows, the only reason why there are more viruses for windows is because it is the most popular operative system, so its a better target for hackers.

I have actually been wanting a MacBook Air, even though I have been using Windows I have been tired of it and been wanting to switch to Mac OS X

I think Mac is generally better EXCEPT when it comes to a large variety of apps. For example, I play a lot of video games and I use a lot of obscure software, so Windows is a better fit for me. However, for my mom who pretty much only uses the built in apps in Mac OS, Mac is a better fit. If there's nothing you'd be disappointed about being prevented from doing in Mac OS, go ahead and switch; Mac OS is safer and quite smooth.
@MCZombie14782 жыл бұрын
@@MidnightTheKitten Yeah a lot of apps were meant for Windows. I used Wine Bottler on a Mac OS X Mavericks virtual machine.

Go for it, it's another level when you get used to it. I use MacOS for music production, graphic design, web development and everything else that I do. Only thing I use Windows for is for games. 😊
@FigmentForever2 жыл бұрын
@@MidnightTheKitten I use Parallels to create a VM to run non-MacOS programs. In particular, most of my online gaming is done like this. You can also Boot Camp Windows in. Albeit, I’m still using a MacBook Pro 2016. My 4TB SSD & 32GB of Ram upgrades make it nearly unbeatable for the mid to high-range gaming and video programs I use. I know with the new ARM processors there are issues with a lot of Windows progs so I’ve been reluctant to upgrade. But for a 6 yo laptop, I still find very little I can’t run.
