Ahoyhoy there, Fellow KZbinrino! There was also a children's television program with Burl Ives, a man who was in fact, in a Disnee film ( So Dear to My Heart ) the series was actually called" Pied Piper "
@nickparsons3376 жыл бұрын
There used to be a series on CBS that ran on Saturday mornings called CBS: Storybreak, when I was a kid. There was an episode entitled "What Really Happened In Hamelin" that put forth the theory that after the Piper rid the town of rats (by having the citizens put out their salted meats and covering up all sources of water aside from the river,) the rats were so thirsty they drowned themselves. When denied payment, the Piper befriends the local bakers apprentice (a child) and convinces him to bake a batch of honeybuns with rye infected with Ergot, (which contains LSA; a less potent form of LSD.) The Piper instructs the apprentice that the honeybuns are only for the children in the town; that the adults are to have none. The children hallucinate, along with the other symptoms of Ergot poising, known as St. Elmo's Fire. The Piper convinces the parents of the town that he can cure the children; but must take them elsewhere in order to do so. The parents, feeling they have no other choice; allow the Piper to take the children away. Pretty fucking dark, right? Yeah, this was on a Saturday morning series for kids, lucky me.

I once heard a twisted version where the pied piper wanted a place in the town or something and what happened was when he led the rats elsewhere, and came back waiting for his prize, the townspeople didn’t give it to him, so, in front of the townspeople, he led the children of the town off the edge of a cliff. It’s really freaking twisted, but that’s a version I’ve heard.

The version I read was different from all of these. The town's people were all greedy, but the mayor still promised a reward for anyone who could rid them of the rats. One resident actually knew the piper and sent him a letter for help. The next day, he arrived in town and hypnotized the rats, leading them to a river where they all drowned. Upon returning to the town though, they only gave him one gold coin instead of the promised 90 silver coins and 9 gold ones. He shamed the people for being greedy and led the children away right that second, instead of waiting for all the adults to leave. They followed him and were hidden as the piper went back to the town. By the time he got back, the town's people had learned their lesson and payed the piper in full. The piper actually returned the children in this version, and the greedy town of Hamelin turned into a town of generosity and hospitality.

To all those people who laugh at the idea of a magic flute luring children away, remember when this story is set, they don't have radio, TV, Etc. A minstrel would have been a big deal back then, kids would have flocked to see what was happening and to hear the music. But I think the last idea was more likely.

I think also it could've been someone the children trusted, and spent time with daily & the pipe could have been a dog whistle. Some degree of deafness was a very common ailment in the middle ages. Especially since they never treated ear infections, and when they did it was with pouring breast milk, coriander, and other odd concoctions down the person's ear. It could've been an earlier version of today's dog whistles. It was common for rat catchers to train animals to kill rats. It wouldn't be unusual for that person to have a whistle like that.

I was brought up on the version that the pied piper led the children into the river, like the rats, and drowned. And to be honest, both is terrifying and why I will never follow a stranger no matter how charming or how musically talented he may be. XD
@zackreynolds215 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard a different version. The Pied Piper was Satan or at least a representative of him. He came to a town that was suffering,and offered his “services”. He made a deal with the towns leaders to rid them of the plagued rats who were spreading disease and overtaking the towns food storage. Starving and sick,they were desperate. Obviously,he wanted their souls,and they,facing certain death,reluctantly agreed for the sake of the townspeople. He then led the rats away with a high pitched instrument,much like a dog whistle that only the rats could hear,that drove the rats AWAY... and no one else in the town knew. The rats didn’t FOLLOW him. He chased them out. When he returned to collect,the leaders suddenly were overcome with fear and regret. They begged and pleaded for a new deal. He replied,”The only thing that I will accept is a sacrifice of great worth in your place...your children.” They,overcome with fear,selfishness,and self preservation agreed. While the townspeople were at church,the leaders gathered the towns children,and brought them to him. He led them away,to an obviously gruesome fate. When the townspeople returned home,they were horrified to see their children missing. When they asked the town leaders what had happened,they made up the Pied Piper story to deflect blame from themselves. Ironically enough,by sacrificing their own innocent children in their place,the towns leaders had unknowingly forfeited their souls to Satan anyway. When they went to Hell,Satan told them that it was he who brought the plague of rats to their town in the first place. Instead of turning to God like the children’s parents were doing in church,they turned to their own wicked schemes and brought suffering on many....including eternal suffering to themselves. The only “happy ending” to the tale is that none of the children,though surely dying in unspeakable ways,went to Hell. They were innocent and Satan had no eternal hold on them. Sadly,if the leaders would’ve simply joined in with the rest of the townspeople in church to pray,Satan would’ve fled,and God would’ve commanded the rats to leave. The crops would return,and sicknesses healed. If not for the wickedness,schemings, and lack of faith of the few leaders,the suffering of the many could’ve been completely avoided......

I lived in Germany from 1978 to 1984. I was told there is another story behind the Pied Piper: The Bubonic plague that killed 130 citizens in the small town of Hamlin in 1284. As the story goes, people were very superstitious of cats at that time. They believed witches used cats as their familiars, or imbodied cats to secretly put curses on people around them. So, they gathered every cat they could find and killed them. Without the cat population to eat the mice, the mice population grew. The mice had fleas, which are carriers of the bubonic plague still today. When the fleas bit people, they got sick and died. The ones who the fleas had no effect on, were people who worked closely with horses. Mice fleas avoid the scent of horses, thus only they and their households survived. In this story, the Pied Piper is death, the children are the village citizens that death took with him. That year Death (The Pied Piper) came twice: First for the cats, which are the natural rat killers, then for the citizens.

What I love about the pied piper is that it's real and isn't really a story. It's one line that someone actually wrote in the town's chronicles, "It's been 100 years since our children left." But there isn't anything else. I'm assuming that whatever happened they thought it was true.

Nice video! Id like to add a viewpoint. Usually folklore & mythology have basis in real world events and are explained in story form to help more ppl understand it. This is leaning more towards the emigration view of this story. Possibly, the pied piper could be another country (Transylvania, Prussia, etc) with multi-colored attractions (jobs, alternate lifestyles) that lured the children (towns people) away.

Even deeper. According to William Manchesters book, A World Lit Only By Fire, on page 66 he describes the pied piper as a real person. On 20 June 1484 he led 130 children from the village and used them in unspeakable ways and mudered them. Their dismembered remains were found scattered around the forest and hanging from tree branchs, creepy stuff.

5:00 It's "Der Rattenfänger." I know our articles are very confusing. :/ I'm no linguist, but let me try to explain it. Germans use gendered articles and all our words are sorted into such. *"Der", "Die"* and *"Das."* *- Die =* female or plural for groups. Like in "Die Frau" (the woman) or "Die Frauen/Die Männer" (The women/ The Men). While "Die Gruppe" (the group) is also female. But only if you start the sentence with this word. "Die Gruppe ist in der Kneipe." (The group is in the pub.) *- Der =* male. As in "Der Mann" (The man). When you're part of a group or describe something IN the group it's "Der". ... germans have to make everything complicated. _>

It is possible that there could have been a piper of some sort that kidnapped 130 children. Maybe not through magic, but through music. Music was popular at the time and if the children heard it, with their parents gone, they could have been curious and led away. It’s like how children are led away by strangers. Strangers aren’t going to kidnap children by revealing their intentions. They will offer candy and look friendly with how they talk. Children will trust and follow them. I have no doubt this is probably what happened, if this tale is true.

it's "der Rattenfänger" not "das rattenfänger" because german has three different translation of "the" which explain the "gender" of the word. Easier said in german a word can be male, female or neutral. The word "rattenfänger" has two different parts put togheter to one word "rat" and "catcher" while rat is a female word in german and catcher is a male word the new founded word always has the same type as the last word what makes "Ratcatcher" a male word. Why google said it's a neutral word leaves me clueless but that's not a big problem. In general I just want to make sure that a missinformation won't lead to more missinformation and stuff :D But the video was really nice researched.

In some version of the story, a friendship of the piper and the crippled kid is vitally important to the tale. Stumbled across this video and I was stunned! Good job, keep up the good work! There is also another very interesting fact about the Rat-Catcher of Hameln (or Hamelin, as I have sometimes seen). A part of my family "originates" from Romania and actually they came there in the 16th century from southern Germany. They were recruited as they were probably lower nobility to supervise a progress of setteling down in the lower Danube area in Hungary and Romania (my family does not really have much records from that time, just stories passed down and fragments of town history where they used to live so everything is kind of blurry). After WW II they emigrated back to the southern regions of Germany again (in the area my family lived German or at least some form of German was commonly spoken, more like an own language as the Amish German people speak than the usual high German probably due to the language development over centuries afar from actual Germany). BUT in the town where I live now there have been (and this is proven fact) a lot of crusaders coming through and by the 12th century they started recruiting children to come to the so called holy land. Those child-crusades never really went to Jerusalem or at least most of the recruited children were either sold on slave markets or simply died on the almost yearlong journey, so they have developed a simplyfied form of the tale that is commonly known as the rat-catcher of Hameln. You want to be a rat and blindly follow, go and die so to say… tl; dr: It is really really cool to hear research about that topic. IMHO I think that there are more factors about this that lead to the story we know today. Probably all of them have some truth to it! Anyways very nice channel! Keep up the good work!
@Orphen42O2 жыл бұрын
In Victorian times, children were recruited to work in mines because they could work in tight spaces, Is it possible that someone abducted children to work as slave labor in mines? Such a theory would explain the "disappearing into the Mountain" aspect of the story? There have been, over the years, disasters that wiped out a certain portion of an area's children. In Wales, the Aberfan disaster buried the village school in tons of coal slag. With 116 children killed, a large portion of the village's children were victims. Also, rats carry disease. It is possible a hantavirus wiped out all the children of the village? For there to be 130 children, the overall population of the village would have to be at least 500-600. What German villages in the area had that dense a population during the 13th century?
