1984 was a Hell of a year...and The Vespas were starting to get big. They went from backyard parties to dive bars...and then, out of nowhere, they were offered a spot on Top of the Pops. "California Dime" got enough heads turning after a few spots on the radio. The band was ecstatic. Too ecstatic. Billy O'Brien, the drummer, drank one too many pints of Guinness at the celebration party. Witnesses say that he ended up trying to shag a prostitute while driving his Vespa, and crashed into a red phone box. Luckily, the prostitute survived. Billy was the main songwriter, and the remaining members, Joey Morgan (guitar) and Thomas Worcestershire (bass and keyboards) didn't want to carry on without him.
There's rumors, however, that some of their early material might be released later this year in honor of Billy O'Brien's 40th death anniversary.
