From the stalker and killer himself, to the judicial system in SA, the GUARDS and onlookers, the judge who let him go after serving time for entering Brazil dubiously and his parents who enabled him, EVERYONE failed this young woman. @@chelleyd4020 Because she said so. Yes, she was indeed a victim of domestic violence. By staying she chose to avoid the undoubtedly increased risks to her own safety when a victim of abuse tries to leave the situation, but the cost to her children as a result of her decision was indeed grave. The cumulative damage to kids growing up in such an abusive environment are huge and leave lifelong scars, and often lead to substance abuse problems, severe clinical depression, PTSD, violent relationships of their own, and suicide. Unfortunately, victims of intimate partner violence put off getting the hell out of there because they are thinking only of the short term dangers; they are less concerned about how staying in an abusive relationship, exposing their kids to many, many years of physical and mental abuse on a daily basis, will affect them in the long term.

Our western world is mostly dangerous due to a lack of poor interpersonal skills, not just S. Africa, but all modern polities changed by contact with the west. I don't know if this represents a deterioration in the general character of individuals or a deterioration in social expectations, but it's sad b/c even though we have far less warfare, gangs and warlords, it's been replaced by entitled, crazed madmen and women who kill b/c they can't have something they somehow feel is owed them and it seems we simply can't stop these people from killing when they get so out of sorts that they become unhinged and homicidal.

I’m a first responder and we call it the bystander effect when people watch but no one intervenes. Crowds often need someone to step up first before they’ll all wake up and help. With that said, the bystanders would be putting their own lives at risk if they attempted to step in and then no one can contact the police for any type of possible help. I can’t imagine the horror she felt and I know the crowd thinks about it often and some people probably wish they stepped in somehow. This man was going to get her regardless if they were somewhere where there was a crowd or if he waited for her to go home alone to attack. He had an agenda and she didn’t stand a chance.
