100% Discovered Kill em all and Ride the Lightning AFTER Justice came out which was when I was around 12y/o. Couldn't pin what the sound difference was. As I got older I realised the bass (with Newstead as the new bassist) was completely drowned out with constant drum fills. Justice still goes hard but you have to feel for Newstead there. May as well have been a 3 piece band at that point

So true. I was a fan from the start, and when Justice was released I bought it on Day 1 and immediately popped it in my walkman for the walk back home. I thought the bass-booster had died or my headphones were going out. Such a tinny, brittle, UN-HEAVY sound. That was the last Metallica album I bought. LOL

No he didn't fit in perfectly. Live he did, even James said that, but on a personal level he never fit in. On a song writing level he never fit in. His biggest contribution was that he connected with fans. Lars wanted to fire Jason early on because they did not get along, but management wouldn't let him. Rob is a much better fit with the band, just not with the fans. Rob is really chill and easy to get along with, where Jason's super serious nature wasn't a fit with Metallica's goofy, prankster nature.

@@mattlovesdrums25Typical misinformed comment as usual. Sure Dave is also a control freak, but at the same time just wanted members that were professional and committed in their conduct and participation while in the band. The only people he seemed to have issues with were those from the early days up until Nick. Junior decided to go after Dave legally and lost badly because of pride, after which he was always on thin ice. The others left because of creative differences, not wanting to constantly tour, and family related issues. Marty played with them recently and you could see him and Dave were still good friends, with Marty being happy with how well Megadeth was doing. Dirk has said he's happy in the band, and you can see how doors have opened for him as he's a popular guest on drumeo now.

@@kylebatteson9572 typical virgin comment as usual. Shawn Drover and Chris Broderick leaving simultaneously was very telling of the situation. before Nick’s passing, he talked about the failed RIP lineup reunion and how he jammed with the Dave’s. the contract Mustaine drew up was utterly insulting to someone who made Dave’s fortune with Countdown to Extinction. none of this is to say that Mustaine is a bad dude- but with someone with his riches and experience, he’s got plenty of access to therapy so he can learn how to not project his problems onto others so much. bro just wants to cry about metallica every chance he gets.

We might have had a bunch of Megadeth songs that were on Metallica albums instead. Pretty tough to see James singing some of those songs, but it may have happened. Another band would have been in the "Big Four" as well. If they ended up doing that. There's a treasure trove of alternate things that might have happened. Another Example - I always like to think about what would have happened if Kurt Cobain didn't die. Foo Fighters wouldn't exist, but I think that Dave (Grohl) would have left the band later anyways, because he is a creative machine. Nirvana would have eventually held him back anyways IMO.

I have a coworker who used to work as a ride operator at Legoland. Retired force recon so he really takes no shit. He’s been working there for a bit less than 20 years so he has a lot of stories about celebrities since we tend to get a lot of them in the summer. One day, he was loading for a boat ride and he sees Lars with his kid. He’s a big metal fan (more so iron maiden than Metallica), but he recognized him immediately. He sees him screaming at his kid in the line. My coworker goes up to him and says “I know who you are, but if you don’t stop screaming at your kid, I’m going to call security and get you out of here right away”. He froze and went “oh okay I’m sorry” and got on the ride quietly.

I feel honestly bad for Mustaine, I mean sure he was a drunk, but it was the 80’s, who wasn’t. The band shouldn’t have let lars decide what happened to him. Also, I’ve been playing drums for 16 years, he is absolutely the worst drummer I’ve ever heard Also, for anyone wondering why the band was able to get on world tours 4 years into their career, and why they let lars have so much control over the band, Lars is the son of Torben ulrich, a extremely famous tennis player, who was a multi millionaire in the late 70’s, which is also why he’s in the band in the first place, even tho he barely knows how to hold the sticks and doesn’t know what ride cymbal is

Torben top rating in tennis was 96 and he won 3 titles. Famous mostly for his unconventional playing style. They were upper-middle class but they weren't super rich. And what about the ones who do have money? Shouldn’t they help support their favourite Artist by buying their music? This was the issue Lars tackled. If Napster and people, who have money and are profiting from artists’ music, can go around doing whatever they want with it without the behest of the people who made them, then what future is their any artist to make a living out of this? This wasn’t just about Lars, it was about All musicians and artist in general. Dave failed to acknowledge this stance that is shared by people like him. Sure, he and Metallica are well off. But what about smaller bands, or up and coming bands? That’s why people like Lars, who had the biggest platform out of all them, could tackle this issue and make it a widespread for everyone to know, including the government. Not to mention it’s within artist rights to do what they will with their creation and property, which is what Napster took away from them. Lars and others like Dr. Dre had every right to sue. Also just because their millionaires, Doesn’t mean they can’t offer jobs to people and them.

As opposed to what, a couple clicks to Download multiple mp3s straight from a computer? Plus, tape trading was a practice by fans of music, who go out of their way to do all of that. File-sharing can be done easily by anyone. Of course, there’s the people who can’t afford the music, but also the people who can and don’t necessarily care about the artist. But I digress. Lars never had an issue with digital downloads themselves, but as I’ve and he have already said, the way it could infringe on their right’s to distribute music however they wanted. He is such a soft player and one dimensional, I was a huge fan when I was a kid but after i began playing and listening and watching hundreds of other Percussionists I realized that he was just borderline average at best and the guys best tracks were mostly off the AJFA record which were more because of how amazingly those tracks were Recorded and the little control freak had Rock and the engineer bring down all the bass so he could sound as if his Playing was the centerpiece of those sessions.. Lars seriously makes his Drumming more scrutinized and judged because of how arrogant and pretentious he is about practically everything.. just look how insecure and jealous he was when he couldn’t play the show in Europe and Dave Lombardo and Joey Jordison sat in and played the entire set, Lars has almost little to no respect to be decent enough and just be thankful that these two masters allowed his band to play an important Show for their fans and instead moans and groans in an interview how upset he feels, In all fairness he’s right to feel upset and inferior because he isn’t near those Two’s playing abilities and I wouldn’t be surprised if he cried after watching the performance the first time, Lars understands he is far beneath Dave but watching Joey who is even Smaller than He is completely pound and shred the heads off his own kit with little effort and dramatically more Power truly should have humbled his big mouth for once..

I don’t know anything about him, but helped him on the phone when I worked high end retail. He was very polite and when I said his name sounded familiar he blew me off. This was after they were really big. Met James in line at the Stone to see Tsunami (from San Jose) if I recall correctly (between Lightening and Puppets) he was totally cool.

As a long time musician I will say the Napster fight was admirable. After Napster came streaming services which have bankrupt musicians even worse. These services are basically legal Napsters that pay .000000001 cent per listen.

why would that bankrupt musicians when touring was always the bigger cash grab than selling records, not only for small musicians but also big names under big labels due to contracts being unfavorable towards the artists many artists spoke about this that if they didn't tour they wouldn't have money and there always were other revenue streams like merch, ads, being featured on a soundtrack etc.

@@FruityHachi This sounds like what you’ve learned from major label documentaries or something. But for indie acts on indie labels, it’s a whole other ballgame, and that’s how most artists start these days. I’ve toured the country selling swag t shirts and dividing up the door $ from a club that took 50% and split the rest between four bands. I can tell you with certainty that this is supposed to be an added bonus to your income, not the primary income. Often it’s just enough to get you through tour gassing up your V6 over and over while driving huge distances in the U.S. Safe to say you go back to work at your regular job as soon as you get home. It’s not uniquely my story, it’s thousands of active and current bands story. As for ads or soundtracks paying the bills for 4-6 musicians in a rock band, good luck. It’s super rare that those offers come in, and you usually have to be playing some sort of pop music to stand a chance.

Lars might not be the best drummer, but he has created some great drumming over the years and the biggest metal band in the world, and without Lars there would be no Metallica and probably no Megadeth either. So you can say what you will, but his good at what he does. And he's not as bad as people claim (at least not in recent time), but most times I see a clip with him and people claim he's an AH and whatnot, I don't see it, but rather down to earth, open and welcoming

I don’t know how much truth there is to it, but at one point I read on Lars Ulrich’s Wikipedia page when the band were trying to figure out their name early on. Lars’ friend of the time was a music journalist with passion to create their own metal magazine. They had two names thought up: Metal Mania and Metallica. Ulrich apparently convinced them that Metal Mania was the better one and took Metallica when they dropped it. Bottom line: in some successful cases you don’t always get there without stepping on a few toes.
