The Victory War Memorial

‘Kala Pani’ was an age-old taboo that prohibited Indians from travelling overseas. But in the early 1900s, the British used a clever workaround to move millions of Indian soldiers to fight their battles around the world. The Victory War Memorial in Chennai is one of the many monuments that honours these men.

Now you know why Indian king didnt manage to build a large navy... And also why we kind of lost to foreign powers without Naval force with a vast sea front.

How did such a belief come to be spread? Indians/Hindus have been sailing to the Middle East, Rome, China and Southeast Asia from the time of the Sindhu-Saraswati civilization and before.

Its still a belief today for some specific hindu families. Crossing the ocean seems to be the issue, vs land routes. I have worked with engineers not willing to leave india for business trips. Obviously its not all hindus as many historic hindu characters (ex Swami Vivekananda) travelled overseas.

But this idea of this belief contradicts the achievements of Cholas or the Pandian traders- they did have ships going overseas.. right??
