I lost most of my lilacs to lilac blight (not fungal but bacterial disease that is also not treatable). After that experience, I won’t be planting boxwood - ever- in my garden. Thank you for posting this video and building awareness!

In the netherlands we have a moth that lays there eggs in boxwoods. It's called Cydalima perspectalis. The caterpillars eat the boxwoods. Most people have removed the boxwoods

I had a 25 year old topiary boxwood, grown from a tiny plant, eaten in 3 days by that Caterpillar 😥😥😥 (UK) and blight is horrid too

@@charlottem6876 But if you treat your topiary it might get new foliage next spring. Older Boxwoods get new growth on the bare wood. So its possible to recover. Cross the fingers it will recover. They need fertilizer and prorection and a lot of attention now. ( I mean slow releasing fertilizer.)

Boxwood moth eradicated these bushes in Holland (exotic invasive species, replicating multiple times during the year). We ripped them all out. A bummer for the wild birds because they were feeding on the leaf eating wurms). We replaced them with Taxus (evergreen, can be pruned in any shape and will regrow from anywhere unlike conifers). Prices of Taxus went skyhigh, because everywhere hedges and such had to be replaced. Hope this helps, greetings from Holland

I feel for you. Last year I planted...count 'em...64 boxwoods. Planning to grow a 6-foot hedge. No signs of blight yet, but sometimes I wish I would have just gone with yew. Another option is euonymus. If you follow Martha Stewart's blog you'll know that she has 100s of boxwoods and she did mention in one post her mitigation efforts. Oh no! I'm so sorry that ended up happening to you. But thank you for making this video! I'm about 99% sure me one boxwood was taken by this. It had all the signs you showed, but I had no idea what was up with it. It completely died by the end of last summer. There was another boxwood just 4 ft over from it, so I'm really hoping it's only since nothing really brushed on it, and I never pruned them with the same tools (or at all) fingers crossed!!!!

Dear Erin, I am so sorry to hear that. Like the lady from the Netherlands commented, here in Germany, (Rhine-Main region), box has pretty much disappeared. There is a double-whammy of blight and a moth (cydalima perspectalis) "Buchsbaumzünsler" - literally 'boxwood sucker" - that's sucker as in bloodsucker! My best wishes for you and your garden.

Make sure to mulch, don't water the foliage, use more resistant cultivars, always sanitize tools when pruning or shearing. Blight can live in soil for years. It mainly spreads from soil when water splashes on foliage or foliage left on soil after pruning. You can also spread it through foot traffic.

Ugh I’m sorry that your garden has been affected by boxwood blight! We live in Virginia and noticed boxwood blight on most of the many mature boxwoods on our property. We knew attempting to control the spread would be futile (dogs that run through them, lawn service that touches them) and we didn’t want to lose all of the shrubs so we attempted to save them by aggressively spraying them with Topbuxus Boxwood Restore and Protect towards the end of the growing season. The few that were hit hardest are definitely still looking skeletal in spots but we’re seeing a lot of new growth and no sign of active disease right now. I wish we had used that product the second we noticed a problem. I’m hoping that treating them monthly keeps the disease at bay this summer and they’ll be looking better by this time next year.

Well darn! I stopped preparing our dinner to watch this, poured myself a glass of wine and then went out to check my established boxwoods and the eleven waiting to be planted this week! I have one Chicagoland I purchased last summer. So far, so good, I think, but I am so tempted to pull it out now. I was told at a local garden center that Chicagoland is just another name for Green Velvet, but was probably their effort to tell me that it didn’t matter the label. I will give all my plants a fungicide treatment, however, it sounds like it doesn’t make a damn difference. Makes me sad since I am also trying to fill areas that are part sun part shade with an evergreen choice that is also more deer resistant. Thank you for the informative video. I feel your pain.

Unfortunately I discovered that Delaware is on the list. I don't have many boxwoods but I am taking measures to insure that I can prevent it. I am lucky that our University is near me. FYI ....I am sure you probably know this but I am going to put this out there. Helleri Holly look like boxwood, and the deer will not eat them. I have a few of them and I have a heard of over 40 deer that have free reign while I am in Florida in the winter. So when it comes time to replace....give Helleri Holly a look. Oh and it is a Sun/Shade kinda adapts well to any light situation. Thanks for the informative video.

Oh, that must be devastating for you, especially to lose the ones you grew from plugs over 7 years. :-( I completed a 4 square formal boxwood garden 2 years ago, using 60 shrubs I grew from cuttings 8 years ago, from a Winter Gem and Wintergreen boxwood. This boxwood garden has been my dream for YEARS. They all look very healthy and are growing into a solid square shaped hedge(around the perimeter of each square) The thought of them succumbing to boxwood blight puts me in a panic! There is a holly that is very similar to boxwood, I think it’s a Japanese holly, maybe worth checking out, especially if you want that look. So sorry for you 💚

Was wondering about alternatives -- it’s needled, but I’ve seen compact mugo pines work nicely as a deer resistant dupe for a rounded boxwood. And they did ok with a bit of shade too.

I have a holly i planted like 20 years ago. We have tons of deer. Tons. They never touched it. I wonder why. Don’t know the cultivar. Regular size leaves. I have to occasionally hack it down because it grows like crazy. But i dont think you could get the tight shaping ability as a smaller leaf variety

Oh dear, this is not good news! I'm glad that you are sharing this information because I don't believe by any account that you are the only person affected in your zone ( you copped on to what the problem could be and sent the samples off to be examined in a lab). The worry is people finding sick or dead boxwoods in their gardens, not knowing what they are dealing with or the danger entailed and simply digging them up, composting them or dumping them and spreading the disease/fungus around. So important to make people aware.

I had blight two years ago. Northern NJ. It killed all the new boxwood I had brought into my yard, after watching your video it was probably on my favorite shovel. Thankfully all the large well established boxwood were fine.

Erin, I am so relieved to hear this. I have been alerted to boxwood blight for about a year and half. Last summer I saw what I “think” is boxwood blight on a boxwood shrub that I planted two years before. I started asking questions regarding blight from a couple of you tube gardeners, but no one addressed it except to say they were going to make a video about boxwood. I did a lot of research mainly from English gardeners as they appear to have dealt with this more that we have. Someone suggested topbuxus. I did use it last fall on one that worries me in my front yard. It has leaves that look like blight but has not died back . I do have a fifteen foot boxwood hedge in my back yard that does not seem to be bothered. I live south of you in Wheaton Illinois. Same zone. I am going to try and contact someone here in Illinois. Thank you for addressing this! I have felt like a voice that no one was hearing. Please keep us updated. I am following you. P.S. I have flower gardened for years, but for one reason, never had the nerve to grow Dahlias. You have helped me get the nerve to try them .of course I am waiting with anxiety to put them outside. I have potted them in my house. They are all over! 😂👵🏻💐

It's horrendous fungus for gardeners and we have a lot of it in the UK now, together with Box Tree Moth- yes a double whammy. (As I start to watch your video I am just assembling a Box Tree Moth trap). If you have acid soil and it's not too shady consider Ilex Crenata balls instead. For shadier areas Yew balls are brilliant. I've started feeding my box wood with Top Buxus fertilizer too to optimise the health of my remaining box balls, and mulch the ground beneath them with Strulch (don't know if you can get that in USA but they say it can reduce the incidence of reinfection by 90%! Anyway, good luck.
