In the post-war world order, the United States and Europe have been among the closest of allies. What happens if President Donald Trump upends that equation? Jeanna Smialek, Brussels bureau chief for The New York Times, joins the show to break down the view from Europe. They take a look at how European leaders are reacting to the early days of Trump’s second term, the strategies EU nations are using in response to Trump's abrasive rhetoric, and how a tariff fight might play out across the European economy.

I think calling Europe the US's closest ally is a bit of a stretch under this current administration. There are talks of considering the US a competitor, to offer Canada and Mexico membership of the European Union, even of leaving NATO to form an alliance without the US.

When I saw the EU and England working on Brexit, it was clear EU was confused. They seem to have painted themselves into a corner.

I don't think demographics or structural problems are at the heart of Europe's problems. I think it's cultural and political problems. The demographics don't look good, but that is more of a long term problem and at least in the medium term there are enough people willing to relocate to Europe and fill the gaps. Structurally Europe does suffer from being an export driven economy with a large but relatively weak internal market, but the market can become more integrated and I think there are many countries in the world that are looking for trading partners more cooperative than China or a Trumpian US. No, the issue is the extreme conservatism and isolationism in large parts of the electorate.

Why don't the Europeans want children anymore? Sounds like a bit of an issue. Why do you believe migration can solve demographic deficiencies? Culture will change because of those newcomers and the fundamentals of society which made those european nations flourish before will be swept away. Not all change is good and not everything that appears harmonious is in actuality. Dismissing people's rejection of multiculturalism/cosmopolitism as isolationism and conservatism is post-modernist nonsense. Human society can't dynamically change as much as desired because our genes can't change along, somewhere along the way nature has been hurt and humanity is suffering because of it. What that issue is.. I'm not sure, maybe it was the industrialization of the world that killed nature and peoples desire to reproduce.

Migration is a big issue. European asylum system doesn't work. 21% of rejected asylum seekers leave the EU and about 50% is rejected. But noone knows how to reform the asylum treaties so it's an endless free lunch for anti-asylum parties which are mostly populists (except in Denmark and now Germany).

How can you say in the same breath Europe's economy is too export-driven and also too isolationist? Honestly I think your hot-take is dead on arrival.
