Vikings documentary on Sigfred's siege of Paris in 885-86. On November 24, 885, a Viking army under a Danish leader called Sigfred sailed up before the walls of Paris. By now, the Danes expected little resistance from the Carolingians, and they likely anticipated a quick surrender. The next day, Sigfred met with Joscelin, the Bishop of Paris. Sigfred demanded that his Vikings be allowed passage upstream, where they could plunder the countryside of France. In return, Sigfred swore to leave Paris unharmed.

They are like the medieval Spartans, awesome warriors but hardly unmatched in their own times and subjects of surface level entertaining that is in some cases almost insulting.

I don't recall anything that reveres the 'vikings', though it could be said that Vikings is a fairly positive portrayal of them compared to everything prior to it. Of course, it still has them wearing pelts and crude, colourless clothing which is neither accurate, nor complimentary. Where can I find these shows where they're 'revered'?

I remember once watching the Viking series and saw the invasion of Paris and was shocked, when in the series it told it was Paris, when it was just random episode I was watching from tv, when I didnt know was it realistic, that Vikings made their way to Paris, but back then Paris was not as big city as today, so they could make their way to Paris, when this battle was nearly 1200 years ago. Maybe after invasion of Paris by Vikings. It made the city much stronger and that allowed it later to grow a lot bigger. Its strange how well so many Viking tribes in Norway, Sweden and Denmark just got together to attack rest of europe, when how they get so many people from the north together to attack rest of europe and how they were intrested to attack rest of europe and not attack each other tribes, when they just left their homelands in big amount of ships and then totally unexpectaly attacked Britain and Russia for example and so they crushed them, when were so many and so aggresive and barbaric.

What's amazing about this historical event is that imagine if things had turned out completely differently what if the vikings had managed to take Paris in 886 history would have turned out very differently for France going forward.

If Sigfred had attempted to bypass Paris the Franks might have repaired the bridge fort behind him trapping the raiders in enemy territory. So didn't Sigfred have to reduce the Frankish strong point before advancing further south?

The scene: a school classroom in Norway or Denmark. The question: what did you do on your summer vacation? Little Vikes: well, we started out cruising down the coast then dad detoured to Paris to see how his cousins were doing on their raid. We wanted to see the Eiffel Tower but it wasn't built yet, so all we saw was a rundown wooden fort. We got to see a wood tower burned down so that was cool.!!

Hey could you do a video on the languages of Europe during the medieval era, and how much they changed over time? Someone I talk with says that the church is to blame for the language of the Europeans becoming less emotional and expressive and was only revised in the renaissance era. Thanks.

@Aidan Knowles Before I got into the details of "ancient" history I would wonder why were the English and French always having wars with each other. Once I dug into that huge mountain called "History" then it was obvious. One thing that's still not clear to me is why the Danes and Swedes fought each other so much. Seems the Danes fought Swedes more than any other group. Some of the fights had a reason but some I can't find a clear reason why a fight started. Strange as they're so closely related.
