see what a great actor Kirk Douglas was--she tells him tony curtis's character is his brother and then in the sword fight you can actually see the doubt surface in kirk douglas' eyes, he's looking at this guy and seeing some kind of family resemblance. that's how great an actor he was. mystical.

Love that film too. First watched it at home in 1973 just in the middle of my young Viking obsession, which to be fair I have never really lost. I was reading the third book of Henry Treece's trilogy based on the life of a fictional Harald Sigurdson. Loved the books and the stories in them and could not believe it when this film came on. Spent the next few years playing and re-enacting the whole film.

I first came across Henry Treece's books in 1985, when I was 12 years old, and I immediately fell in love with his writing and the Viking world he portrayed. I was just feeling a little nostalgic about my youth and "The Vikings" film in particular this evening. Still to this day a great film.

Still amazing today, for 1958 it's truly astounding. Grand scenes, inspiring score, amazing acting, fantastic fight scenes, and back drops that are 'bite the back of your hand' beautiful. But maybe that's because I'm from Northumberland where it's set and was filmed.

Wasn't. That castle is 14th century Fort-La-Latte, perched spectacularly atop cliffs on the north Brittany coast of France, between St Brieuc and St Malo.

6:28 that arrow hitting the sail originally was not planned but an extra's accident. they rewrote the scene on the spot and reedited it so the one arrow was a ceremonial one and the remaining arrows were supposed to follow.

The movie is still popular. Just think at the funeral scene in REDCLIFFE in the Computer Game DRAGON AGE ORIGINS that had been clearly influences by this movie. Also interesting to fans of Kirk Douglas, who also had produced this movie, may be the interview to this film. On KZbin: Kirk Douglas talkes The Vikings in rare 1958 interview. put on the Net by Eyes On Camera, at 2/27/2015 Best part of the Interview to me: PEOPLE WANT TO BE ENTERTAINED, German Movie and TV makers are forgetting this to often. That is why so many of the socalled German entertainment productions done in the German speaking countries come over so boring. At least this iis my personal lifelong impression. And this is why I cherrish movies like THE VIKINGS so much even they are very old by now in coamparison to more modern productions. So THANK YOU VERY MUCH DEAR MR: DOUGLAS for making this movie and REST IN PEACE.

Also Tony Curtis was an annoying actor, i never liked his characters. But that ending was not by chance, they made it intentionally because Kirk was the star of the movie after all, but his character was the bad guy in this movie, so, if Einar dies he must die this way, because the audience identifies with him. He's the man!

Is anyone else but me pissed off with this ending. I mean seriously Einar should have lived and Eric should have died. A mere slave attacking Einar (royalty) with an hawk in the begining. then feeeding Einars father to the English, while in the process stealing the one girl Einar truly loves away from him. And to top it all off in the end when Einar shows him mercy Eric suckershots him in the gut. Erics an asshole, the wrong guy died.

I’m surprised Einar’s buddies didn’t kill Eric after he slew their king. That shot with the first arrow was a mistake as they were all supposed to shoot at once; but the director kept it in there and modified the ceremony a bit.

@CiNeMaN512 Haha!! I totaly agree mate. I love this film but that Eric takes the piss from start to finish. He annoys me through out the film, he never smiles once, even when he escapes and he all loved up with the girl. They have remade loads of shit films but they never remake good ones. I would like to see a remake on this. I know it would'nt be as good as the original, they never are, but it would still be interesting. Also they change things around. Mabey they could change the ending!
