One of the best movies ever, at least in my opinion. Maybe also interesting to you the interview with Kirk Douglas as the Producer of this blockbuster; on KZbin: Kirk Douglas talkes THE VIKINGS in a rare 1958 interview; put on the Net by Eyes On Cinema- personaly I thought it very interesting because this one was not jaded by memory but came straight up from the mind. Also interesting that the only area where the movie got bad reviews were the Scandinavian nations The peoiple there felt rather insulted by the Intro.

Thanks, and just as aqnother fact. THIS movie still is KULT ! Think at all those nvoells it has influenced like Harry HARRISON: TIMETRAVEL IN TECHNICOLOR; about a Hollywood movie crew traverling back in time to the Vicings; or the FUNERAL SCENE from DRAGON AGE ORIGINS. In the computergame they clearly had used the final movie scene as an inspiration. I even think the commen misconcept about a typical Viking Funeral on a burning boat comes from the movie. In fact the true early Scandinavieans had digged in the deceased together with a boat of even a ship, depending how rich the guy had been. By the way, wish you Merry Christmas ( or anything else you like ) and a happy New Year from Germany

Ernest Borgnine grew that beard for the film. And he was actually 1 year younger than Kirk but is so believable as his father!

A true classic. It was the first movie that broke with the cliché of the Vikings being portrayed as wearing horned helmets. Kirk Douglas threw all the money he had into this venture. I first saw it when I was a lad of 13, and to this day, it is one of the movies that I love most. Who can forget the "walking on the oars" scene? The cry of Einar "Morganaaa...", when she is taken away by Eric to England. Or Ragnar, crying "ODIIIN!" as he jumps into the pit of wolves, sword in hand so he can enter Valhalla. And then is the opening narration by Orson Welles, totally priceless. And then is the magnificent score by Mario Nascimbene, who should have won an Oscar.

Every time I see this ending it is hard not to get emotional. I saw this movie in 1968 as a 7 year old. It is one of my favorite movies ever. Norway is so Beautiful, and of course Scandinavian girls are some of the best looking girls in the world.

Narrator: The Vikings, in Europe of the 8th and 9th century, were dedicated to a pagan god of war, Odin. Trapped by the confines of their barren ice-bound northlands, they exploited their skill as shipbuilders to spread a reign of terror, then unequaled in violence and brutality in all the records of history. Narrator: The greatest wish of every Viking was to die, sword in hand, and enter Valhalla, where a hero's welcome awaited them from the god Odin. Narrator: When the Vikings set forth to rob and plunder England, they never sailed out of sight of land. They confined their attacks to swift, overnight raids. It was not an accident that the English Book of Prayer contained this sentence: "Protect us, oh Lord, from the wrath of the Northmen."

They don't make films like this anymore. I first watched this film in 1972 when I was 10. It just popped up one Thursday evening when I was reading one of Henry Treece's trilogy of the Viking, Harald Sigurdsson. I just could not believe my luck. The film has stuck with me ever since as the books have. Now I can see the ridiculuous Hollywoodisation of the story as the brave, noble Vikings are the Americans and the weak, effete English are the latter day British. If only life were that simple. We now know that the Vikings were anything but blood thirsty savages. They were a trading people, who unfortunately did trade in slaves, but they had a rich and varied culture.
@marypetrie9303 жыл бұрын
The Anglo Saxons (or English) were the precursors to the Vikings and closely related, coming from Denmark, Frisia and North Eastern Germany. The effete weak myth is just that,..a myth! 300 hundred years earlier they had conquered the Romano Celtic tribes who lived in what we now call England. Also research King Alfed the Great and his descendants especially Aethelstan.

Ragnar Lothbrok is Ernest Borgnine. Why did they name Kirk Douglas Einar instead of Bjorn?
@jkorshak4 жыл бұрын
Because it's not taken from a saga - it's a story written by writers set in the Viking Period.
@aylazelanagrebiel32104 жыл бұрын
Actually he’s based off of Ragnar’s second son, Ivar he had with the Princess Aslaug. The saga is quite interesting. The film is based off the sagas and a book now out of print “The Viking” by Edison Marshall.
