5 years?!?! Bah!! I've been twice before and can't wait to go back! The care they have taken to preserve, display and explain the ships as well as the many remains is fantastic. I do look forward to the new 'Viking Age' museum - until then I'll have to get my heritage fix by visiting the Folk Museum next door instead :)

I've never visited Norway, but it's a long held dream, and the Ships have held my fascination for years. I really must do the virtual tour and soon! Thanks for a really interesting feature, looking forward to the next one 🦄

I've been to the museum a few times and the ships are incredible but the museums design and use of space is... not optimal, so it's about time it got an upgrade. I'm looking forward to going once it's finished, looks great in the promo material

It would be interesting to know why they designed it in a cross shape...ie. When it was built, who funded it. It was obviously intentional

I would love to visit. The exhibition centre should in my thinking be an upturned clinker boat shape. As for the Christian beliefs of the modern world, I think society are affraid to embrace the Pagan way of life and its findings. Christianity contradicts itself on many levels.

That would have been a great design. Actually, it’s allready been used for an ice skating hall in Hamar, Vikingskipet.

But people form the Viking age have chosen Christianity. No one from the outside world have forced it onto them. Or am I mistaken? Christianity has become an undeniable part of their identity for a Millennia. Why would people then from the Viking age think that the design of the building featuring Christian cross be a slap to their face ?
@NorseReign
@NorseReign 2 жыл бұрын
No, they didn't choose it, at least not the majority. Olaf Tryggvason converted Norwegians to Christianity by force. Heathen hofs were burned to the ground along with other Heathen artifacts. If you didn't want to become Christian, you would get killed. That's why I think it's adding insult to injury, to display Viking ships, from our Heathen days in a building which symbolise Christianity.

Surprised by your concern over the "cross shape" building. It's a building with a shape that seems to trigger you. Please be advised that it is not a church, nor does it represent one, as a church is defined as a group of worshipful people, not a building. Interesting to note that early Christian churches, like the Lom medieval stave church in Norway, used Viking symbols in its construction. Apparently the early Christians who worshiped there were not offended by this, and probably saw it as familiar cultural heritage, not a celebration of pagan beliefs. You would be well served to view the "cross shape" building with the same wisdom as those ancient people did.

Thanks for sharing your opinion! It's my opinion though, that a building which purpose is to display ships from the Viking age, should not be shaped as a cross, a symbol of Christianity. If the building should have any kind of symbolism it would be a far better choice with a Heathen symbol, which is why I'm very excited about the new Othala design. As for early Christians in Norway - No, they probably didn't mind seeing Norse symbols on the stave churches, because Christianity had just been introduced and this was how the church buildings looked like at the time. In fact, having familiar Norse symbols/ornaments on the stave churches, would create less resistance to convert to this new faith.

@@NorseReign 👍🏻🇧🇻 I like the Flag seems like a falling cross sometimes I ask myself why? And its werid but looks more like sword also.

@@Budismo7917 the cross is a symbol of Christianity, just like the flag of Sweden, Denmark and Finland. I believe it’s from early 1800.

@@christopherrygh3324 ok I do understand but The flags of the Scandinavian countries in their vertical or horizontal forms give the shape of a standing cross and a fallen cross is a flag that gives that feeling.
