Interesting video, I had this problem once & wondered how I was going to file a square hole so small through it & you explained a round hole fits onto a square arbor possibly with a little loctite. I have a tiny escapement file but even that's too big. Thanks fir sharing this.

Welcome back! I'm glad to see you back and doing videos. Thank you for passing this information on to those of us that are following behind you in age and skill.

You would have to make up a tapered stepped square broach, broach the piece before you harden it. An other method would be to make up a square shaft the size of the extended pinion shaft, before shaping, drill the hole, then heat up the piece cherry red and hammer or compress over the shaft to create the square---then shape and harden. Clarification got Beck que Beck Brown. If you use a drill on the o d. The same as the across the flats diameter of the square at narrower end and broach with a taper so that you have same taper as the square then use a drift with the smaller across the flats to remove most of the surplus then reverse and do the same with a larger drift you can then file out the central portion with a time y square file it all takes a few moments it's just a matter of accurate measurement sharp too,S and being precise. It's much quicker than lots of other methods and you can mill the blank out of the stock before cutting off and final finish with the file takes the time thstbmy vegetablevarr cooking for lunch to make the entire items from first survey to finished fitted part. happy Horology Hugo

Nice to see you back James. I was quite interested in that project because I have a petit sonerie with a very worn gathering pallet that I plan to repair. Thanks for the video. Be well.

Please let me know where I can buy the same magnifiers you are using. I recently bought something similar on Ebay...what a waste of money. If your's are good enough for you, they will be more than good enough for me!! Love your vids too.

That tiny square hole and in fact the entire part would be a piece of cake for a wire EDM. probably be made in 20 minutes then cut off of the stock.

I know but at 82 I have not invested in any of the modern equipment. I still love doing things the old way. Cheers, JL

You would need to make a square cutting broach to make the square hole. Clickspring (the channel) has a video on how to make these. That's the only way I could think of to make such a tiny TINY square hole.
@hugopetrus347 жыл бұрын
Use a very small square driftvto cut the square I always make the square hole FIRST before the part is cut off the stock so there is something to hold.
@beckquebeck24496 жыл бұрын
I believe it's called a square broaching tool. I never tried one, but i figure it will be hard making the press fit perfect since the gathering pallet is made out of steel. Not sure the broaching tool will cut trough. anyways, thanks for all the great videos, I've seen alot of them and I appreciate the work you do!

James, Great to see you back again. Did you create the safe edge on the file, what form factor of the needle file and what is the needle file cut spec (it looked like a #4)? Thank you for finishing this series. Paul Jones
