I don't really feel like either twist lands with that much weight, but the cast, and in particular Bryce Dallas Howard's performance, make it worth watching. I also really enjoy the fact that they never explain why the creatures are supposedly attracted to the color red...I assume it's to make the villagers afraid of spilling blood.

Hello Dasha!😊 "Do not fret" means do not worry. What is funny is this is a Touchstone and Buena Vista Pictures film, which makes this a Disney movie!🤯 M. Night Shyamalan has a cameo as the guard in the shack where Kevin gets the medicine. 😉 Yes, the elders chose to runaway from the violence of the outside world, but they did force this life on their children. Great reactions to another M. Night film with several surprising twists, Dasha!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I actually loved it too. it's a love story and a bit of a horror movie too. The real horror is the families made the decision to live their lives away from the rest of the civilized country. Along the way people have died and probably could have lived with the use of modern medicine. Passing down the legend of monsters keeping them trapped in that little town is crazy.

I love these types of films in which the viewer is led in one direction of the story and only at the very end does the truth come to light, which brings with it a completely unexpected twist - like in "The Sixth Sense", "Unbreakable" or "The Others"! 😊

“Do your very best not to scream.” In my head I screamed out loud! I love this film! She is a redhead! The ‘bad color’! I love this film! I like to think that because her bravery saved Lucius, the elders will remember that. And maybe, they will be more receptive to not allowing anymore of the younger ones dying from injury or sickness. When she becomes one of the elders someday, she won’t let it happen.

I love this film. It is my second favorite Shyamalan movie, after “The Sixth Sense.” The acting, directing, cinematography, and music are all top notch. The story is highly original, treating anthropological and psychological themes rarely explored in film. I’ve never understood its lack of success. I suspect that too many people were hunting for the twist, which clouded their appreciation of everything else. Had this been a first film, it would have been hailed as a triumph.

0:28 "I'm excited. I... _think_ that this movie, um... I don't know anything about it and I didn't search for it, but when I was getting myself a copy, then I... _did_ see that... it is... a _horror,_ probably." I don't know if it's _supposed_ to be. It's actually the M. Night Shyamalan movie that I've seen that I've most enjoyed and I dare to suspect it's probably because, when I went to see it, the oddest set of circumstances prevented me from knowing anything about it. M. Night Shyamalan has had kind of a sordid reputation with the movies he makes, and I suspect, once in a while, it's because advertisers have misrepresented his work. If you look up a trailer for _this_ movie, they make it look like a monster-horror flick, and it's not. But because the viewing public, by and large, had seen these trailers, they went in to see this movie and were _disappointed._ As a _horror_ flick, this movie is _terrible._ But if you had the chance to see it with _no_ such expectations, you encountered a movie that, sometimes, worked very well as a mystery, and other times, worked very well as a _love_ story.
@lazyperfectionist2

I think Lady in the Water is an excellent movie. it's a modern fairy tale with a classic adventuring group using modernized roles to replace classic medieval fantasy party roles. People get so disturbed over the "silliness" of these modern roles but get excited with fantasy making the average joes' special adventurers as a typical trope, and they're too simple-minded to see that those medieval/fantasy people were just normal people doing basic day-to-day crap before being dragged into whatever world changing/ending plot.

Glad you liked it. It's such a sad truth that in order to escape from evil people want to remove themselves from society. I know I purposely often do. The world outside seems so lawless sometimes. Drivers who don't deserve their licenses, NEVER stop at stop signs, people who tag the restaurant bathrooms which they themselves frequent, costing local business money to fix just for it to happen again a week later, so they just let the walls look like trash. People go to such constant extremes to ensure their world never gets better.

Only from urban societies. Urban areas are cess pools and cancers on society and always have been. Their only benefit is to be a petri dish to grow large numbers of populations for work/war and, later on in civilized evolution, to farm for the rare genuine/special artist that appears in rare numbers. Those two things are the only benefits of urban sites, in exchange for endless plagues, crimes, disorder, moral decacy, and debauchery. not a smart trade.

When it came out, the movie was almost sued for its resemblance to a YA novel about a girl who had unwittingly been raised as part of a.19th-cty. living-history museum farming village escaping into the modern world. But charges were dropped, as it was pointed out that if Shyamalan had ripped off the novel, he only got the first three or four chapters of it. 😂

this has nothing to do with inceyst. lol Inceyst disorders take multiple generations to saturate bloodlines (depending on the strength of each generations' unions). The odds of having any major degradation from a single coupling of full siblings is extremely low. But that's to be expected. Modern people are extremely ignorant about inceyst. But why you'd stretch this movie to have anything to do about inceyst is beyond me. Even if you want to foolishly believe single couplings cause major problems, almost all the adults there were married or met up with strangers with the creation of the village. those adults/adolescents were not made from inceyst. wtf.

@@unclebounce1495 the small genepools are the reason why the main characters are blind or retarded. its the moral dilemma they face in the end if they want to continue on with the entire village if the result is that future generations are all disabled in some way. so yes the entire film is about that, there really is no other reason for it otherwise. so you might not have understood the movie at all.

i object to all the comments that they "forced this life on their children". this is a very narrow and frankly bigoted view. yes you could say their life is harder, has less comforts and less access to medicine but you could also say they have a much lower risk of injury, sickness, greater safety, healthier food with no preservatives, healthier activity levels, and probably better mental and emotional health. different lives then us does not mean a better or worse life just different.
@tonyrossell832

Great movie, though like you I always thought the village elders were not good people. Why not use all their resources to create a better world for everyone instead of just for their family and friends? The root of most evil is the idea that some human beings have value and others don't. The elders created a society where that evil idea was fundamental to their way of thinking. Sooner or later they would reap what they sowed. Still an amazing story though.
