Originally falling in love with the Jonny Craig-Dance Gavin Dance I never could have imagined someone else would step in and completely crush all that and steal my top spot like Tilian did! It use to feel like there was the dirty and clean lyrics and they operated separately of one another in the old days. With Tilian I feel the entire sound they create together is one gigantic masterpiece now!

OG DGD > Tilian DGD 😓 It’s not like newer stuff isn’t bad or I hate it or anything, it’s just so polished & I feel like his voice is so 1 dimensional & airy & I don’t particularly love it. My favorite work of theirs is probably the DGD demo from like 2006 tho so I’m probably the minority here opinion wise.
@yesitsmecsd Жыл бұрын
@♄ o l o g r a p h i c oh man, that blows my mind you could call Tilian 1 dimensional... while Craig had a heavenly voice it was literally 2 pitches he went back and forth between. Tilian constantly goes up and down in range, smooth soft "sexy" singing and higher scream level singing and flows between all beautiful. IMO Tilian is anything BUT 1 dimensional!
@Heksensang Жыл бұрын
@@yesitsmecsd I respect your perspective but I agree to disagree. Tilian is a great singer but something about it just seems flat for me, not saying his singing is flat, it just feels that way to me. When I listen to Jonny era DGD its like I can just feel soooo much more emotion, all his pain & fucked up-ness is communicated thru his singing which I find very enrapturing & almost cathartic. I fw DGD either way & sometimes I listen to newer stuff it’s just not rly my thing.
@yesitsmecsd Жыл бұрын
@@Heksensang I can actually understand that...Tilian is always singing, as a singer does, and i love the way it sounds...but at the end of the day it is still just singing...as opposed to Jonny Craig, he poured his heart out through his music. It still to this day sends chills over my body hearing certain songs by Craig. Honestly, i think thats why i like DGD with Tilian more, bc they are all just making great music together, where with Craig it was amazing soul pouring over music and his parts were all that i cared about.

I hold vocalists like Tilian, Anthony Green, and, yes, even Johnny Craig, in high regards talent-wise. They have a uniqueness to their voices that you can point out regardless of the band or style of music. Too many vocalists around who just try to sound like everyone else.

I think Acceptance Speech Tillian was my favorite. His voice sounds the most angelic and pure (Robot Pt. 4, Carve, Swisher Pt.3, Doom and Gloom, Death of the Robot are where it shines most). As much as I like IG and Mothership, I was not a fan of the harmonization technique used. Rather than creating chords with vocal layers like on Acceptance Speech (Swisher Pt. 3 intro for example), Mothership, and IG to a lesser extent, has the vocal layers operating at the same note, but lower octave. Young Robot and Frozen One are good examples of what I mean. That's fine, they're still great songs, but I didn't dig that one aspect as much as I did with the Acceptance Speech approach. Just my opinion, and I'm not trying to trash on the guy - while not at first, the Tillian albums gradually became my favorite of the discography.
@danspitalnik7 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more with all of this. I was starting to think I was the only one who preferred his silky smooth vocals to the rough vocals on Mothership. The harmonies on AS were so sweet.
@landrysaathoff24187 жыл бұрын
I understand that. To me, they are too robotic-sounding in Acceptance Speech. To each, their own. TBH, I never thought of them this way, though. I have new appreciation for AS now.
@BRNardy7 жыл бұрын
Simplyric Yup, totally agree! Although I think his angelic vocals shine the most at Jesus H. Macy and Acceptance Speech (song), but, nonetheless, it's angelic the whole album, actually.
@KHmixerX6 жыл бұрын
I both agree and disagree with this. While it’s true his vocals sound much cleaner on Acceptance Speech, they also overpower just about everything else on that album to its detriment. The producer’s fault most likely. Also, that aspect causes his voice to sound less natural than it usually does. That raspier, more strained sound present on Mothership and Instant Gratification to a lesser extent is quite nice in my opinion. Gives the music a more raw feel. Unbridled.
@KHmixerX6 жыл бұрын
I never noticed the octave difference though before and now it’s all I can hear on Mothership lol.
@DylanMcBride7 жыл бұрын
I feel like it's a mix between his progression as a vocalist and Kris Crummett's progression in mixing his voice. Because on Crummett's stuff, between Acceptance Speech and Instant Gratification, there's a huge shift. Acceptance Speech and previous having a strange film over it and the later stuff sounding very natural.
@mandospiegel89947 жыл бұрын
Dylan McBride I'm not sure if this is related, but, how come it's harder to hear the clean vocals of DGD's earlier work? Like, from their self titled album and onward, it's easier to discern from the guitars, drums and any other instruments and the dirty vocals.
@DylanMcBride7 жыл бұрын
Ultimately, I think it has to do with the audio engineering. I believe they've always used the same guy so it makes sense that they would all get better together. More directly, I think it has to do mostly with tone, the mastering chain and just smart and simple panning to allow for the vocals to sit right in the middle of the mix.
@mandospiegel89947 жыл бұрын
Dylan McBride Makes sense. I've been curious all this time, because I really enjoyed DGD's earlier work, like Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean, but I've always been bothered by how quiet the singing is. It's like the singer is singing quietly in a basement or something.
@BrucifyMe7 жыл бұрын
