The Voices Of Iroh (Mako Iwamatsu & Greg Baldwin) Avatar: The Last Airbender Video Essay by fukurou fetus
the original name of this essay was supposed to be "tragedy of leaves from the vine, mako iwamatsu 1933-2006", hence the thumbnail. i ended up not wanting to call it that since it wasn't a topic i was able to dive as deep into as i had expected, but decided to keep the thumbnail since i think it looks cool regardless. thanks for reading.

Truly a shame a lot of ppl only got to know of him after his passing. You never appreciate these VA’s till they’re gone which is why ive started paying attention more to who they are. Can’t thank Nathan Fillion and Mako enough for voicing my favorite characters.

I was 13 years old when Tales of Ba Sing Se came out and I was proud to bawl my eyes out. Seeing a Father's love that was that true, really moved me. Edit: I started crying when I saw 2:28 All he wants is for people to live happily, because he knows the costs of fighting.

Another Greg Baldwin fact, he almost always refers to himself as "the second voice of Iroh" or "the second voice of Jack" always showing his deference and respect for Mako. Just a real beautiful gesture

I was looking for more info on Mako and Greg with regards to voicing Iroh and came across your video. It was beautiful to watch, I think you did an amazing job with editing and how you organized the information. Also thank you for linking to the interviews you used, I saw the second one, but not the first or third so now I have more to watch! Also congrats on going from 50 to 10k subscribers in a year-ish!

There’s a podcast called Avatar: Braving the Elements that had an episode from February of this year with Dante Basco, Mike and Bryan, and Andrea Romano the voice director which went into some more detail about working with Mako, and these were the 3 main takeaways from it: 1. Iroh was originally meant to be a more stern mentor figure, but Mako brought so much warmth into the performance that the character changed. 2. As to what Mako thought of the show, the people on the podcast generally said they thought he appreciated it, and Dante claimed Mako would say to him that he would’ve liked to play the role in live-action, too. 3. The recording for Leaves from the Vine (which seems to have been done at a studio rather than from a hospital or something) left everybody weeping, and afterwards Andrea went over to Mako and hugged him.

I don’t know if this is true but I heard Mako was on his death bed while voice acting for this song and that’s why he was crying in the middle of the song it wasn’t acting, it was a true sob. When I saw this scene I didn’t cry but I still felt sad😥😭

He did record some of his final episode lines in the hospital when he was in and out I think that's very likely that may also bw part od Why greg baldwin won't sing the song to any fan at conventions maybe it's to personal to him
@combatking4218
@combatking4218 Жыл бұрын
@@danmulholland1634 I met Greg Baldwin before at a convention one time. And I talked to him about the leaves from the vine part and he told me that people have asked him to sing that song but he refuses to do it because he wants to leave that as a thing that belongs to Mako. So he basically wants to honor him and respect for his work as Iroh and other characters which is why I have huge respect for Greg

I'm not a doctor, but the throat is the home of some very important lymph nodes. It's likely the cancer spread to these vital areas, and it's also quite likely Mako had symptoms they didn't report. For me, this makes the story even more moving, regardless of the accuracy of my assumptions. TLAB is a masterpiece; a very special part of history that cannot be replicated, in my humble opinion.

Mako is possibly legendary for his role as this character at least two people from my generation, the group watching avatar the last Airbender. I had no idea he died until I googled him. it is a tragedy of of we’ve lost so many past 16 years. All we can do is carry the memory of them in our hearts and spirit.

Another thing from Korra i'd like to point out, so they named Mako's grandson after him which I thought was beautiful, and they also did the same for Iroh's grandson in the show since Zuko's son is named Iroh, and the fact they put that much effort into his story really touched my heart. What a way to mirror life with art.

It's even more sad when you hear what was going on behind the scenes. Don't know how true it is, but he was allegedly already on his death bed by the time he recorded leaves from the vine and knew his time was up. The song just triggered his sadness about dying further.
