Actually incorrect, the first time we see Iroh genuinely try and slow down the progress of the Fire Nation was when he attempted to stop Zhao from killing the Moon and Ocean spirits. He even poetically proclaims that the Fire Nation also needs the balance.

I'd argue that he kind of became more focused on his education and care for Zuko, as far as reasoning goes it is understandable. But...that doesn't mean he did nothing up until the Battle of the Northern Water Tribe. I believe that Iroh knew of the importance of the Avatar and actively tried to stop Zuko from finding him until he was ready while also stopping anyone else from doing so. It is a fact that Iroh did not want Zuko to capture the Avatar and return home for Zuko, but that also happens to benefit the White Lotus. What is also seen in the show is Iroh not wanting anyone other than Zuko to eventually find Aang. I think his apparent laziness and inactivity WAS his activity for the White Lotus, as well as for his family. For Zuko.

I‘d actually go as far to say the first time *we see* him slow down the progress of the fire nation is in episode 1 when he tries to basically gaslight zuko into not following the light aang projected over the sky when he broke out of the ice… xD (although that obviously wasn‘t his only reason for it lol) Edit, I didn‘t see the answer comment, strongly agreed!

@@AcT403 It's more than possible honestly. Iroh had spent years dedicating his life to knowledge of the spirits. He would have known a lot about the Avatar as well as it's significance in the world. You've actually seen Iroh do this while being on the inside during the episode where he was captured by Earth Kingdom soldiers. He used his age and appeared laziness to appear much weaker than he is and to consistently slow down the...uh...bird horses? Things... It is exactly how he is with Zuko through almost all of the time chasing the Avatar.

That’s a very good point, and I see where you’re coming from! However, I don’t think this is really an invitation, rather that it’s his master’s way of oh honoring Sokka by secretly telling him that he’s worthy of being in the white lotus. Since he never reveals what the white lotus is, there is no way for Sokka to know that it means anything. I think it’s awesome and a massive indicator, but I think it’s meant more as a way for us to understand how important Sokka’s progress has been, rather than a canonical indication that he joins the white lotus

Anyone else giving Master Pakku serious side eye as a member about taking knowledge and finding beauty from all places? Like the dude refused to teach Katara because it was specifically against his tribes customs, without admitting that that’s not how the southern water tribe did things. Pakku straight up didn’t care about the cultural genocide of his sister tribe until simp mode activated. Dude was also pretty antagonistic towards Aang, though it became more prickly afterwards. They were at war, and he refused to teach the avatar despite knowing the consequences. Jeong Jeong I’m willing to give a pass for if only because the dude was dealing with some serious ptsd and war guilt. We know the north hadn’t fought the fire nation for I think eighty five years, based on the captured uniforms.

i think the reason for that is that he might not have been a very highly ranking member, he was isolated in the north and might not have understood the true meaning of The White Lotus, and the reason he appears at Ba Sing Se is bcs hes a very strong waterbending master, and since it was other masters we meet along the show, the Avatar creators could have thought he should be there aswell (they didnt rlly think abt it lore-wise, just abt the fans and how we would be excited to see friendly faces instead of strangers). Or, another explanation could be that he discovered and joined The White Lotus on his journey to the South, and was enlightened by their ways. Personally, I thought he seemed a tad bit more sincere when we see him again which could be a sign that The White Lotus have opened his eyes or sumn like that. (or maybe gran-gran and the gaang made him a better person)

Or... gran gran was a low ranking member. The only member in the south. And being isolated, all she knew was that the avatar was gone/lost. Then one day Aang showed up. When Pakku went down to the south she talked to him about life and such. That's when his ideologies truly changed and he then became a low ranking member. Now that they had benders and were rebuilding and could get info a little easier, he was able to get the info he needed to go to ba sing se for the fan service 😅. Just a quick personal theory

Historically, the White Lotus were a heretical Buddhist group that got blamed for a bunch of rebellions throughout China. So I'm sure that influenced their depiction in Avatar.

According to IMDb the only continuity issue ALA was the design of the white lotus tile… this could suggest one of two things one each nation had their own version of the white lotus tile or there are different levels of the organization

If you haven’t read the second Yangchen book, the white lotus definitely has an espionage side to things and we’re more than just sharing information. I think that is their core purpose but they were active at getting the information and pulling strings to help essentially maintain balance alongside the Avatar. This was just as an organization that had more stability than you would find with a single individual like the avatar who could be deeply affected personally by the things they experience in their job. they also try to control assets like Unanimity to help maintain that balance. Edit: just realized how old this video is so the book probably wasn’t out yet. 👍🏼

Unclw iroh actually says to zuko that the white loyus piece is usually an unimportant piece in the game in the episode of the pirates and the water bending scroll. And in the introduction to the white lotus group during book 2, uncle iroh plays pai sho with another member that says the piece is prety much only important for a certain game strategy, one that probably simbolizes the groups ideology

Did you know there was a real-life White Lotus Society in China? Similar to the anime, the historical White Lotus was a secret Buddhist-Manichaean society. They played a significant role in uniting rebel factions after the oppression of the Yuan dynasty and the Red Turban Rebellion. Ultimately, they helped establish the Ming Dynasty. In short, they started as a rebellion fighting for the people and eventually became the new ruling power. The sad irony, however, is that the first emperor of the Ming dynasty, wary of the White Lotus Society's influence and their ability to rally the people, saw them as a threat to his rule. The different ways the nations used to find the next Avatar is an interesting subject. The Air Nomads had a way that required _every_ child to individually be tested. That's extremely time consuming if there are a lot born around the same time. I don't know how the Water Tribes did it, and I only know the bare minimum of the Fire Nation's method. They had the Fire Sages use fire in a certain way. The Earth Kingdom used a geographical method. Their lands are vast so it is quite fitting for them to do so. They are just repeating a process over and over, answering the simple question of which half of this area is the Avatar in. The reason why Kyoshi took so long to find was because her parents were in a band of thieves that moved whenever the authorities came close. Eventually her parents abandoned her. She lived on the street and a child not living on the street got mistaken as the new Avatar.

Its bugging me so I have to share. In pai sho, the white lotus tile is disregarded by most people and often not included in a set of pieces. However, there is a specific strategy that makes it powerful. Its smart that they picked it because people who are uninitiated are unlikely to have it, unlikely to use it, and almost certainly not going to be aware of the strategy to use it properly, and for sure will not know the pattern to put a lotus on the board with another player. Someone who does respect and use it might be someone you would invite to be a member because it demonstrates their free thinking and personal drive to seek the truth. Its actually kind of important how unimportant most paisho players regard it.

yes, they fed her ego and they pretty much erased the original concept of the Avatar and the importance of the journey they take. Aang learned he was the Avatar at 12 and clearly was not ready to learn the information, if him running away is anything to go by. But in a twisted away Aang running away and dooming the air nomads is the path he needed to take.

Never expressly stated in the show but my head cannon puts Monk Gyatso as a grand lotus and Ming (the gaurd who was nice to Iroh in prison) as a junior member. As well as all of Ang's team avatar also being inducted after the war with vering degrees of involvement.
