Rewatched avatar the last Airbender. I didn’t even know the backstory of this song or that episode until today. Mako was the original voice actor of Uncle Iroh for the last Airbender. Sadly he got esophageal cancer and this episode “tales from ba sing se” and that song “leaves from the vine” was his last day of voice work for the show before he passed away. The drawing of Iroh’s son here in this episode was based on Mako himself as a young man and the song “leaves from the vine” was written about him as he was also a soldier. He never got to see the episode air. The actor that took over voicing Uncle Iroh for Mako for the final seasons was Greg Baldwin who still today refuses to sing “leaves from the vine” when fans request it out of respect for Mako, saying: “That’s mako’s song.” I fucking can’t guys

Thank you for sharing this information. I remember Mako from Conan and Samurai Jack, and loved his work in ATLA. I didn't realize that each of those instances (minus Baldwin's work) was all the same actor, or that it wasn't the same actor voicing Iroh after "Tales of Ba Sing Se". Mako did a phenomenal job, and Baldwin's work standing in for him was amazing.
@marco8356

That's wonderful to hear. I found this video TONIGHT after binge watching ATLA. I noticed Uncle Iroh sounded off, then after a few episodes, looked up why. 14 years later and I find out that the most fatherly character of my childhood/teenage years had passed away hurt a little bit. Legit, Uncle Iroh's speech of catching an octopus and calling Zuko his son made my mother accept my love of the show and actually allowed me to watch whenever it was on, regardless of what was going on. That wisdom made a strict Spanish mother ease up on TV time lol

I have to admit that he did do a really good job on the previous episode. Though I'm guessing it's because in the previous episode Aku was more optimistic and energetic. Therefore, his voice was easier to imitate when having a higher voice. In the other episodes, Aku is shown to be more depressed and I'm guessing it's harder to sound like Aku in such a depressing emotion. Just a thought.

Greg is pretty much able to do 90% of mako's voice. Its as close as anyone can get without being mako himself. the 10% lost are things that would be only possible with his voice, the coarseness of aku's voice as mako strains his throat slightly, and the warmth of iroh's voice as he speaks. No amount of practice or imitation could ever recreate those things, gregs voice is functionally a perfect imitiation within the bounds what an imitation is and not just literally having his voice

For those who don't know, Greg Baldwin was Mako's understudy during the production of Avatar and TMNT 2007, so he was chosen and trained to take over his work when the time came. I believe he does justice to Mako's Legacy, but my word alone might not be enough for you, so you decide for yourself. UPDATE: Apparently the understudy thing isn't true, how about that... The main issue with Greg's Aku is that it seems like Greg is struggling to reach those higher pitches. Greg sounded much better during Aku's therapy scene, as Aku was using a more calmer, Iroh type voice. Greg just needs a little more shout in his voice, and needs a scene where he's trolling Jack.
@kevincass9917
@kevincass9917 7 жыл бұрын
Well, the thing is Greg's Aku is meant to be a bit more depressed, and you can hear it in the way he speaks. Shouting in his voice would only ruin the idea that Aku is kind of depressed at the idea that Jack is still in the future and won't die naturally.

Gennedy originally thought to make an all new voice for Aku for the recent season. However, he eventually decided to try to match the original Aku. However, I wouldn't be surprised if he instructed Greg to make it his own as well. Iroh was straight up duplication, while Aku is certainly different, yet similar. I'm fairly certain this might have been on purpose. Kind of like a "look, we'll never fully replace Mako. We might as well make it unique while at the same time similar." In the end, it's Aku. Sort of a different voice, but it's certainly still Aku. I'm kinda glad they went this way.

Mako's Iroh has a certain sound that you can hear, like a slight whisper. Greg's seems a bit thicker, but it is very very close as it should be since he trained under him. Aku's voice, yeah you can hear the difference, but it's not completely bad. He added his own spin, but still honoring Mako which I think is important to note. Greg can copy him, sure, but he doesn't just copy, he pays respect in doing so. I think that's the difference.
