William the Conqueror's victory at the Battle of Hastings marked the start of Norman rule in England. The Norman kings, including William Rufus and Henry I faced numerous challenges in maintaining control over England and Normandy. The era was marked by the brutal Harrying of the North, the establishment of the Exchequer system, and King John's turbulent reign, which led to the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215.
Welcome to Chronicle; your home for all things medieval history! With documentaries covering everything from the collapse of the Roman Empire to the beginnings of the Renaissance, from Hastings to Charlemagne, we'll be exploring everything the Middle Ages have to offer.

I blame the Normans for all the trouble that beset the British Isles after 1066 and all that. It was the Normans that invaded Wales and Ireland not the English and these Islands has suffered the legacy of the Normans ever since.
@roberthudson3386
@roberthudson3386 Ай бұрын
The Saxons had invaded Britain and driven the Britons to Wales, Cornwall and Strathclyde before this. The Gaels had also invaded Scotland and assimilated the Picts. The Saxons had previously carried out atrocities such as the St Brice's Day massacre under King Aethelred which was a murder of Danes. The Vikings had themselves previously invaded Northumbria, Ireland, the western Isles of Scotland, the Isle of Man, and attempted unsuccessfully to invade Wales. The Normans were brutal but every people that has ever occupied these islands has been brutal to some degree. Also the Saxons invaded Wales on a number of occasions including Harold Godwinson himself invading Wales in a campaign which resulted in the Welsh giving up their own prince, Gruffydd, who was executed by the Saxons. The idea that only the Normans oppressed the Welsh and Irish is nonsense - we Welsh to this day call the English "Saeson" (Saxons) and never used the term "Normaniaid" (Norman).

@@roberthudson3386 Yes we all know that, but it was the Normans that conquered Wales and Ireland not the Saxons, The Welsh, Scots and Irish just like to simplify history and the English are a convenient target. Saxon England was the first to be conquered and brutally suppressed by the Normans but some people choose to ignore that part of history. There was no English (Anglo Saxon) King after 1066.

Had not our Lord Christ Jesus told Peter to put his sword away, for all those who take up the sword would perish by the sword? Had he himself not refused to be thrust into the political struggles of his day, even though he knew full well the painful destruction that the Romans would eventually bring upon the Jewish nation, even stating that he and his followers were no part of this world? Why then did our powerful Norman and Saxon ancestors shed torrents of blood in their quests for power and riches? Could it be that the weeds Christ Jesus foretold had appeared, and the wolves the Apostle Paul foretold had indeed arisen? Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43, Acts 20:17, 29,30, Matthew 26:52 John 6:14,15, John 17:16, Luke 19:41-44

I love these documentaries and the channel. But honestly this is the worst portrayal of Eleanor of Aquitane I've ever witnessed. All of the early profiling is based on the most dispoved and outrageous lies that have been told about her, and that were mostly written or told by men. Gladly medieval women's history is now being researched again and rewritten. She was one of the most powerful figures of the XII century.

How are "Anglo-Saxons" not foreign but "English" ? I thought they were Anglo Saxons.

Weren't they the English by the 1100's? They'd invaded England hundreds of years ago by this time, hadn't they?
@hockeygrrlmuse
@hockeygrrlmuse 13 күн бұрын
IMHO you are both right... Angles & Saxons had been there for centuries and had assimilated. They were "English" in the same way Normans were "French." I can see why Normans were thought of as more foreign than Anglo-Saxons; English wasn't really spoken by nobles & kings again until Henry IV. But even then that goes to show that they assimilated too. And then the Welsh Tudors, the Scottish Stuarts, the... Hanoverian Hanoverians, and the German Saxe-Coburg-Gothes also became English, though much faster.
