We just bought a 2019 Nissan LEAF for 13,223.00 after rebates and incentives In Colorado..Also with free charging for three years. It gets 177 miles per charge to 80%. The deal is good in Colorado until Sept 30th 2019. Awesome car way better than VW for the money and we have it NOW. We have a Bolt also.We love them both. Keep up the great work Nikki you and your team are wonderful.

$13k? For new Leaf? That’s insane how? Amazing price, congrats. Btw I have one and I’d say the real range is more like 140miles avg and even less in cold months unless you never go over 40mph. Still a great car though, I love mine.

Nuts in Bolts that’s brilliant - free charging is a real buzz! I used to do that at my local dealer - I could pull-up day or night 24-7 and plug in for free. It was great... ...until they stopped it and now I have to ask a member of staff to unlock it with a code during office hours only- they said it was being abused by taxi drivers in Zoes! But I thought there was a Renault Nissan alliance - massive thumbs down to the dealership for that #bitter! But still I’m happy for you, sounds like you’ve got the best setup ever with a great car. Enjoy!

Nikky Gordon, the reason VW is stockpiling cars from November but not selling any before 1st Jan 2020 has nothing to do with VW avoiding customers having to wait in line, instead it has everything to do with maximizing the amount of ICE cars VW (and all other manufacturers for that matter) can sell after 1st Jan 2020. That date is the date when the EU will start counting "average CO2/km on all cars sold" and give massive fines to all manufacturers coming in above certain levels. So, literally, its VW gaming the system to be able to push out as many NON EV cars as possible in 2020 for as low a fine as possible. Any cars sold before 2020 is not counted to lower the average, thus VW (and most other brands) are/will be stockpiling as many BEVs they can, both to sell as many ICE as possible instead before that date (giving no choise to customers that need cars before 2020) as well as keep as many BEVs in stock to offset the fines for all the ICE sold in 2020.

Well... But it will be until 2023. !!! IMPORTANT !!! The real reason why carmakers do NOT want to sell e-cars until 2022 : watch this video (in spanish) of Saul López youtuber kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGiVkHWFfbiGgpo. He is a spanish youtuber (he lives in Paris) who has 184.000 subscribers. He is an electric car passionate. The link (document in english) that he posted in the video description : www.transportenvironment.org/publications/mission-possible-how-carmakers-can-reach-their-2021-co2-targets-and-avoid-fines. Saul López explains in spanish that the carmakers prefer to pay huge fines to the European Union for the next years instead of decreasing CO2 emisions until 2022 because in the long term it is cheaper for the carmakers (intead of investing a lot in R&D). During 2020 and 2021 the European Union will make estimations of global CO2 emisions for every carmaker. In 2023 carmakers will have to begin to reduce CO2 emisions progressively percentatge-wise from their own CO2 emisions of 2020+2022 (not from the 95grammes of CO2 that the European Union put as a límit). Saul López knew that carmakers just didn't want to sell e-cars. Now he can prove it becauses KIA send a communication to spanish carsellers asking to not sell any car electric car before 2020. All carmakers have the same internal policy but they explain it by phone to car sellers instead of writing it. Carmakers will really start selling electric cars in 2023.

Thanks for the info. I’m not anti-EU and their heart is in the right place, but I’d rather VW had the cash than a Government body, so keeping some stock back on average a month or so seems a good plan. Considering that hardly any of this first batch of ID3 buyer are likely to be scrapping an old knackered diesel car (at this price more likely they will sell on a fairly good car), the planet won’t suffer so much more.

North America needs cars of this size and type. We haven't got much in the way of selection at the moment, and I think VW will be missing a huge bet by not bringing the ID3 to the U.S and Canada sooner rather than later. Not everyone wants to drive SUVs and Pickups. Some of us actually enjoy driving a smaller, more maneuverable vehicle. After all, that's what DRIVING is all about.....not floating down the highway in your living room.

The problem is if you look at the sales numbers on any of the vehicles that fit that criteria like the Honda fit, etc. Small hatchbacks just do not sell well in the United States. I agree with you I think they're fantastic you get a ton of space and usability but people often don't think they have much room inside of them and that isn't truly the case. Unfortunately perception tends to drive sales. I drive the most boring car in the world just about a Toyota Prius. The primary reason is the practicality it's a hatchback with a ton of usable space and it gets great gas mileage. I'm a Rideshare driver and I get compliments all the time from people that the car is quicker than they imagined it would be and has way more room in it than they imagined it would be. most American buyers don't bother to check out cars that aren't on the top of their list.. they don't think outside the comfort zone. I do hope Volkswagen brings this car to the US, Nikki did say the ID4 would be coming. I also hope of the car shows to be more reliable than most of Volkswagens fleet.

@@kens97sto171 Here on the west coast in B.C, with the exception of Hwy 1, the Trans-Canada Highway, our roads are more mountainous and twisty, more like a lot of European roads. This kind of car is great for our area, Only when you head east outside of B.C. do you find hundreds of miles of flat, level road. The type of American cars we started getting in the 60s and 70s were far more suited to these flat highways than a lot of our secondary roads, but most of the cars sold here ended up getting bigger and bigger. Now, a lot of North Americans are looking for a second car....an ELECTRIC second car, and the choice is not there. Until people get their head around the idea that their car doesn't have to be two or three tons of metal, they're going to be missing out on a great driving experience, and electrics aren't going to get the chance to get a proper foothold on the North American market.

I want a 130-170ish horsepower equivalent, 4 side doors, rear hatch, and a roof rack I can put 4x8 sheets of plywood on. I want wagons which will carry 4 2m tall people and luggage, I'm short at 1.84m, my dad has the legs of someone who is 2.2m tall. I want something that I can run a slalom at a decent speed - try doing highway 50 from Lake Tahoe to Denver with a top heavy SUV.

I'm one of those people who prefer to have physical controls for things when I'm driving. This is because I prefer to not look at things when I activate them. If I know the feel and location of certain levers and switches, I can usually set them properly without ever taking my eyes off the road. I don't like having to take my eyes off the road to activate the windshield wipers (especially if I have to go through several menus to do so...that's guaranteed to pull all of my attention OFF of the road). If it could give me audio-feedback as to where I was in a menu, I could deal with that. That's why I'm not a fan of the minimalist design of the Model 3. As long as there are switches to things I need while driving, I don't mind it as much.

300.000 cars/year = 25.0000 a month = 5.769 a week (appreciate this includes other MEB models) is close to Tesla Model 3 production numbers. The entry model 3 cost 25% more than the ID and in terms of size, there is little difference. May the price war begin!

Allowing for currency conversion, import fees, delivery costs, and so on, the Model 3 price in on-par with the 'expected' price for the ID.3 with the equivalent battery size (the founders model is iirc more expensive than the Tesla M3 SR+) Don't forget that you have to buy the top-range trim to get things like 'lane keep assist' and upgraded audio system which come as standard on the Tesla. Don't get me wrong - I think having the ID.3 enter the market - in volume - is a good thing. Just don't try to oversell it etc. Yes, Tesla are moderately expensive, mostly because they *don't* do the crazy optioning process that other companies do, and their base model includes most of the stuff (especially anything software related) that other cars only put in their top trim and/or charge extra for

@@logicalChimp Great point. This is what I loved about buying a Tesla. The last car I picked up before was a Honda Civic, and that process took hours just to pick out all of the options that dealers charge way too much for. At Tesla, we went to a "showroom", got a test drive, went to their conference area, and we picked out a demo car (saved some cash). The whole process took less than an hour...and my parents went in 2 months later to buy their Tesla.

Yuchen Nie There is a rumor that VW would like to buy Tesla or will work together with Tesla. You can not sell a car whose door is jammed because the frame is warped that is a production error... Tesla has absolutely no idea about vehicle construction and logistics. The electric car pioneer Tesla is driving the expansion of its production with the help of German technology. Tesla takes over the Rhineland-Palatinate plant manufacturer Grohmann and thus lay the foundation for an automated manufacturing center in Germany, said the US company on Tuesday. Grohmann develops, manufactures and sells automated production equipment in the semiconductor, electronics and automotive industries. The company with 790 employees converted last year 123 million euros. „Stockmarket

I have driven some low end VWs and Audis and find them particularly over assisted and feel-less. (I assume that GTIs must be better as they seem to receive rave reviews). I don't require phenomenal performance (in fact, economy is much more important), but I do enjoy driving and most modern cars just don't cut it for me. Thanks. Keep up the great work.

It's odd that you to insist that other vehicles don't cross shop with Tesla... ID.3 is 44 Keuros for 1st edition... a Tesla model 3 SR+ costs... 43,8 Keuros... today. So...they're the same price, and the cheaper ID.3's are a few years away... They are around the same size. Kia Niro EV is also the same price, and also 6 months wait. in Québec, the Chevy bolt EV is easy to get, but the comparable trim to a model 3 SR+ is Premier, which again is virtually the same price as a model 3. For now, the charging network is a Tesla advantage, ability to deliver is a Tesla advantage, OTA updates are a Tesla advantage, and the car itself is really, really nice to drive. I wish VW, and all other automakers, well, but even if I could buy an ID.3 today for the same money, I would compare it with a model 3 SR+ and very likely buy the Tesla. To say they don´t cross shop is very weird.

It looks like you use the German price of the model 3 after Umweltbonus. Shouldn't you apply the Umweltbonus for ID.3 as well? And isn't 1st edition €40K? So after Umweltbonus €38K? But I agree with you: with these prices in similar range of course people are going to cross shop.

Most vehicles registered in this price range (at least in Germany) are and will be leased company cars. The leasing conditions for fleet customers with special frame agreements are totally different than those of private customers and for professionals with higher hourly rates, Tesla has a real disadvantage when it comes to service, repair and maintenance.

Peter Silva The Model 3 costs 46k€ before incentives, the ID3 1st (which is a limited edition!) starts at just under 40k€. And don’t forget the ID3 is a more practical car because it’s a hatchback. The ID3 has OTA updates as well and it also supports Plug&Charge, so the charging experience will be equal to the charging experience at Tesla SuC. The biggest advantage of the ID3 will be the service network. I had to drive 500km to replace my door handles of my model X. The next VW service is basically around the corner.

I feel the same as Karan. I'm looking for an EV with okay range, that isn't a giant SUV, looks okay, and has a moderate to low price point. So I'm pretty open to most EVs that are priced on the lower end. Therefore, if a car comes along, that isn't a luxury car, and cost about as much as a Model 3, it's going to be tough for me to rationalize buying that car if I can get what I perceive to be a luxury car for that price (i.e. a model 3).

The basic no option ID3 launch edition will cost 40k euro - which is just about OK (but still expensive in my mind - and considerably more than a hi spec Golf diesel they claimed). But now news leaks out that just the next level up (PLUS) which includes tinted window, extra USB ports and other little trinkets and baubles and paint is an embarrassing 46k and the full spec MAX version which includes lane assist and heads up display a whopping 50k. Way too high to be credible! I also learned that the heat pump, that I had believed was standard, is only on the MAX version - and not available in UK on launch. Think I will be seeking my deposit back.

That is only Zwickau, plans are already in place to retool Emden and other plants for MEB cars as well starting next year, and they build another new factory in china to produce up to 500.000 ID.3s for the chinese market only, production will start in a few months there. By the way, the Chattanooga plant will be partly retooled for MEB cars as well, which suggests that MEB cars will eventually show up in the US, however, most likely other cars and not the ID.3 at first. Currently that plant produces the US Passat (quite different from the european one) and the Atlas (not available in Europe at all and under that name outside North America). That said, Ford licensed the MEB platform as well, so they will produce cars on that basis as well, no idea for which markets at first though.

But no, it is not limited dealers, any dealer can sell ID.3s, on registration you can freely choose which one will be your dealer. I simply used the closest one which is VW directly, well, one of several outlets they have in this town. Right across the road is Audi and right next to that Porsche, where they already put in quite a few 800V chargers. The VW dealership had fast chargers for a long time, publicly available as well.

at the moment there are 19 Ionity charge stations in France and 10 more are under construction. Give it time and they will build more. But they are not going to compete with Tesla superchargers. Then you have all other brands of chargers you can use dont have to stick with Ionity 100% of the time.
@Muppetkeeper
@Muppetkeeper 5 жыл бұрын
Depending on your driving patterns, you may not need supercharging very often, and if you do, the ID3 can plug into a huge variety of chargers. Most electric charging is done at home, so consider your 'everyday driving', is it less than 150km? If so, you probably can charge at home all the time.
@johnweiner
@johnweiner 5 жыл бұрын
@@Muppetkeeper Well, actually I want the long-range version (550km--WLTP) because I don't do much city driving (I live in Paris where I can get almost anywhere with public transportation) but do make round trips of 400-450km or longer. Having a fast charger along the route would be reassuring (imagine coming back to Paris after a long trip with 5% charge and finding yourself in a traffic jam entering the city--it happens all the time), but I suppose not strictly necessary. The density of Ionity chargers in Germany is much greater than in France, and I wonder if that is a matter of policy or logistics; does Ionity have an announced policy of filling in all the holes in France or is always going to be pretty sparse.
@Muppetkeeper
@Muppetkeeper 5 жыл бұрын
John Weiner You should check other brands of charger, I think that France is pretty well served, and it will only get better. There are only 2 IONITY chargers in the UK, but would still be happy to buy an ID3. My guess is that like many other manufacturers, they are making "several thousand" cars a YEAR. Which in VW numbers is a compliance car. There will already be huge waiting lists in Europe and China so they are not going to introduce more delays by opening up the USA market. A very popular car, the Hyundai Kona EV, is only being built at a rate of 2-4 thousand cars a MONTH. Tesla is building 7 thousand a WEEK. Another possibility is the ID3 and the Kona being in direct competition with the Model 3 and the Model Y SUV on it's home turf. Here in the UK we have a Model 3 or a Nissan Leaf for about the same money. Only someone missing both eyes and their brain would even consider a Leaf over a Model 3.

I love my used i3 Rex for what I paid for it, but its not especially reliable and the range isn't adequate (hence the ICE extender). Tesla's Model 3 isn't a hatchback (and the Y is more fastback than hatchback it seems), and lacks the upright driving position my damaged body needs. Plus, it's bigger than I want. @PierpaoloValerio
@PierpaoloValerio 5 жыл бұрын
What? Under the bonnet there is space for the 12V battery, wiper fluid, AC radiator and stuff like that. Where else would you want to put those? There's no ICE engine, which is why the bonnet is super short and there's more space inside the car, this is clearly not a "converted" ICE design. Tesla also puts the same things in the same place (have you ever looked at the bonnet of a Tesla?), they just make the bonnet incredibly long compared to the space needed, so there's room for a "frunk", but it's mostly to make it look like a conventional car sacrificing interior space in the process. If anything, the VW approach is a lot less "conventional" than Tesla's.

One of the easier to omit but great passages of this report was the carbon neutral production. Has any other manufacturer done this before? (honestly curious) And especially since emissions during production had been the main argument against BEVs being sustainable for basically a decade now, this step from VW simply disarms this point completely. So we get a good range, modern interior (with buttons for most things that need buttons) in a compact hatchback with loads of interior space for the same price as an Opel Corsa which in turn is cheaper than a Honda e? That is really great news. (Also Seat is now charged with developing a platform for a sub MEB platform, so there will be more affordable ones too at some point.) Nikky Gordon, I agree that the ID 3 has no direct competition in Europe. Even at the 40k price of the first. VW has a loyal following and an excellent dealer network while having access to Europe massive charging network. V.W. is correct in NOT bringing the ID to the states. The First ID at 40k is simply not competitive in this market. Even with the $7500 tax credit. It would sell in very small numbers after the initial introduction. A 250-mile range CUV. Even an RWD one would sell extremely well in the states. Americans have no love for hatchbacks sedans. Not even electric ones. Unless it is a Tesla.

its really stockpiling because the car has a software problem. They have to reload every car manually. Secondlyt they wont sell the car in the US Its a ways off if it does ever come to the US.

What I need to know is that VW is refusing to sell this in the USA (and Australia until some time in the 2020s). I wish Tesla could take over VW so this car would be sold here.

What’s the battery cool solution? If it’s air cooled then VW and their reliability problems will move from the ICE age into the EV age.
