Came here looking for a solid explanation of what I was smelling and why it was affecting me a particular way. Beautiful diagrams, made it very simplistic to understand biologically impulsive thoughts/feelings as a woman 👍 I would like to see further studies around the sublingual courtship behaviours of humans. It makes sense in basic theory, however as a child I was told animals can smell my emotions, my fear. From then on, I always focused on putting out a particularly inviting smell and have been fine around animals that were considered dangerous to be around or were known to bite. Likewise with people who are known to be unpleasant to be around or violent, those behaviours don't leave of course but people at first seem generally receptive until higher order thinking comes into play. Human social hierarchy is interesting, I struggle to understand what is correct and what is not as I've spent a large portion of my life being in tune with violent & stressful situations to keep myself safe. Ive been insistent that those with certain mental illnesses like schizophrenia smell of ripe candy apples, men with high testosterone that are healthy smell like water, salt and something else that stings my nose. Women who have high estrogen and are healthy smell the same, only with the female version of the smell that stings my nose & makes my eyes water, like a burst of cold in your nose. Anyone who's sick smells like musty sickness, and anyone who's old smells like aged alcohol and leather. Depression has the smell of sleep and sadness smells like bitter tears. Happy smells like a bunch of things depending on the person, it's like their natural smell amplified by about 5x. What messes me up is mainly that those who have infertile bodies, smoke, are allergic to something they eat/use, take certain medications or have medical conditions do not smell right. I've been trying to find a way to explain this for years, but nobody seems to smell what I smell? I put it down to a biological mechanism that is trying to tell me who's healthy and who's not because my bodies naturally programmed to seek out a genetic match for reproduction. I thought it was a myth that someone compatible would activate my brain until I experienced it, as body odours and the like are not something I'm generally attracted to. It literally tastes like honey and salt in the air, your brain goes into overdrive and for some reason your whole body is prepared for something you don't understand. It makes you drool when the right pheremone hits you, makes your hairs all stand on end, makes you feel electrically charged and takes over your thoughts no matter how much you push them away and keep them down. Perfumes and colognes really fuck up my ability to discern people and their health or fertility, but soaps don't usually mask it. The worst part about a compatible pheremone in human society is that we have everything in place to confuse the sense of smell & make us rely on sight. Almost nobody I have met has been compatible, but the few I have met have been insane. I realised after meeting many schizophrenic people via the following of my nose and my brain lighting up that I was smelling their chemical imbalance and that they weren't actual genetic matches, the sweet taste is actually the same one that rats sniff out produced by a chemical in those people's sweat (look up rats IDing schizophrenia) & after a while of being around them I could usually smell something else like fear chemicals. Why must my nose lead me to such weird discoveries about people? And I forgot, fear and hatred reeks of this vomit-inducing foul smell. It literally reeks of bile. Anger is different, and depending on the source can be broken anger or righteous anger that either breaks the person or is making them feel better. It's a bitter heavy smell that tastes like blood and tears. I may be extremely neurodivergent, but that's how it is for me - anyone else?

I've had a very similar experience my entire life. I actually smoke to dull myself enough to function in public spaces. It does quite a bit to plug it all up since people are blissfully unaware of their own smells, mostly because they can't smell past the perfumes. I wish I couldn't because it would be easier to hang out.

Humans are not affected by pheromones, your impulsiveness isn’t caused by this

From what I've read, the VNO in humans is generally understood to be vestigial or not present with no projections to the olfactory bulb or other peripheral brain structures. Do you have some references suggesting it's active and projects to the olfactory bulb in humans?

OK, I hadn't listened to the rest of the video. I can't find the "stripper study" you refer to though. Also, do you have any anatomical or genetic reference for the connection rather than just behavioral?
