Shipping The Grinch with Tony the Tiger actually feels somewhat meaningful. Because Thurl Ravenscroft was the original voice actor for Tony the Tiger in the old Frosties adverts (or Frosted Flakes, as they're called in America) and he was also the singer for the iconic "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" song from the Chuck Jones animated adaptation of "How The Grinch Stole Christmas".

Also, I have a few crack ships myself (mostly platonic like Mr. Bean and Casper the Friendly Ghost). But one romantic ship that has prominence in my own fan fiction, "John Egbert's Retcanonical Adventures", would have to be Alec Lightwood from "Shadowhunters" (the TV show adaptation of "The Mortal Instruments" from 2016) and Niles from "Fire Emblem Fates" (who was also my main in "Fire Emblem Warriors").

- Can confirm that crackships and crossover fanworks are a tale as old as online time; in the 90s/00s you had congruous video game genre characters, crossover video games ( _especially_ fighting games of the time) and the early anime boom of the late 90s, along with big event comics. This all totally transferred over to an _overflowing_ of fanfiction and fanart by folks with eager imaginations--90s and aughts anime crossovers, big multi-fandom fighting tournaments spanning dozens of chapters, literally anything involving Sonic the Hedgehog since he's always been a multiverse unto himself... ...then yeah the 10s came around and I got to watch everything _re-explode_ in the fashion you described. History repeats! - I _really_ need to watch Rise of the Guardians at some point, it's been on my list for the longest and I _know_ it's good but now I feel like I could decode all of 2010s fandom with it 😂 - "Two characters who have never interacted, hate each other, or have some other questionable relationship to one another" maaaaaay or may not comprise 90% of my shipping material 😅What can I say, the dopamine comes from the freedom and/or problem-solving opportunity! Throughout my entire life, I've always imagined (but rarely put onto paper) what I think was my own equivalent of crackshipping: imagining fictional characters playing music from various real bands that are completely unrelated to said characters LMAO This was something that has been in my brain ever since I was a kid, for I used to imagine characters like Phineas and Ferb singing and playing David Bowie or something. And honestly, as a grown adult, I still have fun with imagining and coming up with scenarios like those lol (btw is there a community that imagines these exact scenarios that I'm unaware of?) This is sort of why, even though I don't really participate in or pay attention to crackshipping, I relate to the fun of it, for it's really entertaining to combine existing material and create something new out of it.

The thing that made me realize how much I enjoyed crackships was Tomodachi Life, that game's an absolute GOLDMINE of crack pairings once you put in enough characters from different pieces of media. One of my absolute favorite crack ships is Linebeck (LoZ: Phantom Hourglass) and Ganondorf (Loz: Ocarina of Time), specifically within the Super Smash Bros universe. I am so glad you touched upon the character study and analysing aspect! I've done this so much since my pre teen phase, I always liked to pair and compare characters from different fandoms Story time! One of this pairings was Applejack from My Little Pony and Sanji from One Piece. I just connected them for being blond, cooking for the team, using kicking as their fighting style... I started shipping them kinda to annoy other people on a forum and see their reactions, but I loved to imagine how they would interact in a more honest way. Eventually, I just created 2 OCs based on them and it's when they were allowed to develop as their own thing. It's been what, 10 years? Gosh! And I still use this OCs for role play with my friends! They had children, they are way older now, they are even divorced, so much happened... But the entertainment we got from figuring all our characters out in a collective story was always worth it, and I wouldn't have these two if it wasn't for my annoying 12 year old self and her obsession with anime and ponies, haha

Carackships are one of my favourite things! They bring me so much joy. While not exactly a crackship as it is a crossover ship based in cannon, my favourite is Jimmy Neutron x Timmy Turner - especially aged up. I just find them relatable and enjoy the autism x adhd dynamic and seeing them figuring out how to navigate adulthood and growing up. Bonus points if the fic also has Danny Phantom and SpongeBob in reference to the nicktoons unite games (despite the fact that I never played them). Second favourite goes to Bowuigi (be careful with some of the fic tho bc some people really like torturing Luigi and not tagging everything)

Hoo boy, I could go on for hours of what kind of pairings I’ve made. I even refer to this personal story of mine as The Act Out Story as the name implies: acting out all the characters and making a plot as I go along. Most of the shippings involve the slasher characters friends or in relationships with other characters from other series that to the outsider wouldn’t mesh but to me, I look at it as being creative and playing around with how they can work. Mostly the relationship themes I would say follow the opposites attract approach. Two completely different people finding common ground, how it plays out for them to mesh either as friends or lovers and what not. Granted, the villains can become good guys while others stay villains. Basically, my own personal way of expressing myself without embarrassment while still developing story skills if not actually writing the story down, but keeping notes of plot points and character sheets. Ironic though how I wanted to make this an actual thing despite the feedback not being positive let alone accepted cause these characters are who they are and you can’t change that to fit your own little world (which I completely understand), and all before crossovers we’re becoming more mainstream, only to not become interesting once it does spread out further. Sad as that might be. At least it eventually led me to be open to making my own characters that are inspired by them somehow. BTW, if any one wants me to list what mine have been if curious, that’s fine.

My First on Crack Ship(Platonic as partners in solving crimes) , that I made is Jessica Fletcher from Murder She Wrote x Detective Colombo from Colombo and Ojciec Mateusz Migrocki from Ojciec Mateusz(The Polish Detective series based on Don Matello). Idk how I did came out with it, but Im quite fan of it, Since I grow up on these series

I’m a sucker for crackships and I have two I created. One is a bit weird as it features a cut character with a character from a web series while the other one is Michael Afton and Miyuki/Cure Happy (Emily/Glitter Lucky) from Smile Precure/Glitter Force.

This was very entertaining :D The cackle when you mentioned Megamind and Omniman was just... pure gold X'D Unfortunately, there's a vast noisy minority who wish to label anyone who does shipping *at all* as... well, you know, you've talked about it before. It's a common accusation now for just about anyone who is viewed in any way as not fitting a particular mould - we don't understand you, therefore you are a **** - they don't even have to offer proof now, people just accept it as fact... When I think of crackships my first thought is Shrek and Shadow. Though Shrek and Spongebob is a close second. One I’ve seen recently is Garfield and Squidward. Also I remember Nickelodeon did a crackship of Lisa and Naruto in the old nick magazine.

I'm currently making a crack ship of Kakarot, Naruto, Ichigo, Ruby Rose, Peni Parker, Ben, Albedo and Steven Universe. Yes, it's insane amd pretty tasking to get all their personalities and creating scenerios where they all shine through as best as I'm able to make them.

I adore crackships. I was there during Jelsa and it was one of the best things I’ve seen even though I’ve moved toward thinking of them as close best friends or queerplatonic partners. I have a couple crackships that I fly the flag of Mainko (AtLA) This is one that has some, but basically none textual evidence between Mai and Jin (the girl from Ba Sing Se) and their mutual love interest, Zuko. There’s a single vignette in a comic that tries to establish Maiko as having getting together between seasons, but they bump into Jin and it’s amazing how much Jin there does for their dynamic and for Mai as a character by giving her a chance to be more than just deadpan. She’s still that of course, but she’s smug and flirty and a show off and possible to amuse. It’s great and it’s all because Jin’s there for her to bounce off of. I ship the two independently but I do think both possible Zuko pairings are legitimately improved by being mashed together, poly style. I also ship Boschlow, which I usually don’t think of as a crackship because they have ample screen time, but the way the fandom treats them as being impossibly severed by Boscha bullying Willow, I think it could count. I think the most crack part of it is shipping it with a healthy dynamic. It’s funny to think that they could be toothrottingly sweet together if they gave each other a chance. I also ship what I call the Timmycule. It’s between Timmy and all his canon love interests (Tootie, Trixie, Veronica, and Cindy Vortex) + Jimmy Neutron. It’s not a everyone loves everyone kind of polycule. Timmy’s dating everyone, but Trixie and Veronica are together and Cindy and Jimmy are also together. I am even writing it into my rewrite of Fairly OddParents because it feels liberating to just not worry about what would never get through censors because this will never be canon or official. It’s fan work and it’s the perfect place to indulge in what-ifs. And honestly? I think it’s a really interesting dynamic that uses characters who are commonly shipped without bringing in any of his friends and ruining that dynamic. I also ship toxic old man yaoi (Amphibia/TOH edition) because it’s funny. Belos x Andrias is great it inspired me to make one of my favorite OCs because I was curious what their kid would look like. There’s some fun dynamics that come from putting two villains from sister shows together, especially since Belos is a religious bigot and Andrias is probably cool with the gays, being bi (though not having the term) himself. They don’t acknowledge how gay their love is, they just let it happen. Here’s one that I don’t know if anyone else has thought of it before, but requires twisting the timeline’s arm until it says “uncle”. Mako and Katara both in their mid twenties together. The AU goes like this: Korra and Bolin are Mako’s kids while Zuko is Katara’s son and the kids get their parents together. Idk it’s a really weird set up, but it’s fun to make the mom/dad friend comments made about these two literally true. And for completeness, Sokka is with both Suki and Yue and they each had a kid at the same time, those being Toph and Aang. It’s a very silly thing, but it’s fun to rewire the family tree a little bit, just for fun.

Yeah I think through peer reviews and proper argumentation, it has less of an improbability factor, but it remains between two characters who don’t share much screen time, and part of the appeal is that it’s funny, even if you add serious elements later.

one time back around deltarune chapter 2 came out i drew an image of mettaton and spamton dancing together because of their connection with the secret boss fight and such and i was. i was doing this in class so my teacher looked over and was like "what are you drawing" and i just had no idea how to tell her. tbh i should redraw it at some point. anyway my favorite crackship is shipping all of the narrators from any given media together (especially narrators from games and also sgt frog). so many have similar personalities and they would clash so hard with each other so i think they should kiss sloppy style to make up

I was about to agree that crackshipping has been on a sharp decline but then I remembered the recent Disney/JJK crossover on TikTok and how much everyone was loving that and despite not being into JJK or on TikTok, that instance gave me hope that the chaotic, creative days of 2010s fandom might someday make a return
