Hervor and her tales are the most intriguing to me. I was thinking about her the other day, hoping there would come another video of her tellings. Here it is, thank you Dr. Jackson Crawford for sharing her tale and sharing most interest in it as well.

As you know, this is a saga I'm very interested in, as I am doing my thesis on the version found in the Hauksbok manuscript. Thank you for sharing!

Very good cover of this often forgotten saga. As a native Swede I can relate to this as most events take place there before moving to Eastern Europe. Just that some of the scaldic beauty gets lost in the English translation but it's mainly kept when translating into Swedish.

Thokk Dr. Crawford, for this most beautiful translation. And also for your well spoken version of the original saga, which is inspiring. Because of my job, I'm often talking to Flamish speaking people. Astounding is, how faithfully little Flanders has maintained the same quality pronounciation of the r's and of all the range of vowels we find in old Norse. One secret how to conquer the rolling "r" (when you first wish to speak it) is to concentrate on the purity of the a - o - i - e - u/ü sounds before the famous r. When I concentrate on the beauty & purity of the vowels and when I respect the clear structure of the syllabs, the famous "r" starts to roll like a good motor. And by the way: Flanders people are by nature steady working, but slow speaking. This is my approach, but I hope it encourages people to try to well pronounce by themselves this beautiful language which your videos bring us for free. Far vel Dr. Crawford!

Excellent timing for a lady-saga; Here ye o publishers. I'll buy it. "You can't burn those flames so bright at night that the fires will terrify me. This woman's heart will never tremble even if a ghost appears before this door." I want to be part of that book club. Shout out to Berserker dotre. Jackson, you are a prolific treasure.

Dr Crawford, I am a huge fan of your videos, and always look forward to your uploads. I was wondering if you could make a video about Viking parenting, and common skills which would be passed down. I have two children, and enjoy teaching them the skills I have, and am very interested in what this would have been during the Viking age. Keep up the great work, Sir.

Unfortunately I feel like that's something which is hard to know. It may be mentioned in a few surviving stories though.

Crazy that “á gotu hennar” later became “og gå til hende” then “and walk to her” in. English

Getting your family sword by berating ghosts into giving it up from the underworld is way more drengir than pulling it out of some dumb rock.

What's with all the fire coming from Hel(l)? Is that Christian influence or did pre-Christian Norse think of Hel as being full of flames?
@VikingsRBloodyAwsome6 жыл бұрын
swīnhelm I would guess that it's christian influence, Hel is often described as a cold place.

I always kind of imagined it as some sort of spell or magic used by the dead to try and scare Hervor since a lot of magic seems to be illusion in these sagas, but that's just my interpretation.

When you pronounce tyrfinger put emphasis on the Y more. TYRfingeR. And in “finger”, pronounce it less like the English “finger” but put a Nordic pressure when pronouncing the second part of finger. Fin-ger. Keep it up mate
