Lizzie was suffering from severe mental illness. It wasn't stubbornness or being too sheltered or her age. She had delusional thinking caused by her mental illness, and she literally saw the walkers as something different than what they really are. Back in the beginning of the season Mika in a very matter of fact way stated that Lizzie is messed up. When their father died, Mika had her do the "look at the flowers" with the counting and breathing. That is a therapy technique, and it's clearly an old hat for Mika to have to take care of her big sister. It's safe to assume (and heavily implied) that Lizzie's mental illness issues existed before the apocalypse, and that she had been in therapy (and possibly on medication). There was no preventing it, and no amount of trying to teach Lizzie was ever going to work. The only thing that would have prevented Mika's death would have been if Lizzie had died first. Carol didn't really have much of a choice. Lizzie would have killed Judith, Carol or Tyreese at the first opportunity that presented itself, or got herself ripped apart by walkers. She had zero understanding or remorse for what she did to her sister. There would have to be someone awake and watching her 24/7..... and to what end? Without the proper therapy, anti-psychotic medication, and stable environment her mental health would only continue to decline. And don't forget that Tyreese of all people agreed that was what they needed to do. It was a horrible situation with equally horrible options, and absolutely no chance of a good outcome.

perfectly put, id also add it was also obviously her who had cut apart the animal in the underground part of the prison and pinned it on a board, only got a short look in as it happens as the Governor attacks with the tank.

The big clues being her literally mutilating animals for fun, and the fact that Lizzie mentioned, in passing, that she can "hear" what the Walkers "are saying"... A bit surprised Dan didn't pick up on any of this.

Fun fact. The puzzle they were working on throughout the episode is a picture of Sophia coming out of the barn. The director came over and placed the picture of what it was on the table to show them what it was just before they shot the conversation scene between Carol and Tyrese.

I’ve looked it up and the only thing I can find is that Lizzie was probably suffering from some kind of schizophrenia and saw the walkers as people and was “hearing them”. But in reality she just had a severe illness that would not have gone away and was only worsening.

I always thought Carol wanted the kids to be competent with weapons and defence because she didn’t want to lose her own life protecting them. She knew she’d put herself in jeopardy for them, this way she wouldn’t have to. Plus, I think Lizzie had been medicated before and in therapy for a severe mental illness. Her parents probably didn’t mention it to anyone for fear of being kicked out, or having folks believe she is dangerous.

I remember commenting on the reaction where Carol teaches the children how to kill. I stand by saying that she should've spoken to the parents. This was a consequence of that. If Carol had spoken to Mika and Lizzie's father then she would've gotten the information on her mental health. Lizzie was struggling before the apocalypse so teaching her to kill unlocked a darker side to her personality. We all know Carol intentions wasn't bad but Carol is projecting her trauma from her daughter's death on to these children. When you're teaching children how to protect themselves in the apocalypse you need be very attentive and instill morals. We saw how Carl became cold and started making rash decisions, it's why he needed a break from his gun. Rick was being a great father by assessing the situation and removing Carl from it. It's easy for kids to become child soldiers in that environment. So I say yes teach your children to protect themselves but also instill morals.

Didnt they talk about at some point that Lizzie was on medication for a mental illness before the apocalypse and when everything fell she obviously couldnt get the medicine she needed anymore? It seemed like I remembered that conversation happening. I cant imagine being Carol and having to make that decision..but it was the right one for the world they are living in. Look at the Flowers will always be an iconic line. Tyreese is a big teddy bear and I love him for it. R.I.P Mika 💔

@annapurna4054

I don't think Tyreese would have killed her either, but that said, he's able to forgive her now because he took part in making the decision to kill Lizzie. As you indicated, that gave him the ability to understand what she did with Karen and David in a way he wouldn't have understood before this. He told her he knows she feels it and that it will always be with her. He knows that because now Lizzie's death will always be with him and something that he'll always feel. This is one of the most powerful episodes in the entire series. It generated a lot of Emmy buzz in the media at the time, especially for Melissa McBride (Carol). Most of the media considered her a frontrunner for an Emmy nomination that year. Unfortunately, the Emmys continued their long tradition of ignoring the fantastic actors on TWD. But she was nominated for a Critics Choice Television Award and she won the Saturn Award. As others have mentioned, Lizzie was suffering from mental illness even before the ZA. There were hints given in earlier episodes that she'd been undergoing therapy/treatment. Tragically, that was no longer an option in the ZA world. They couldn't have one of them leave (or stay) with Lizzie, because there's no way the other one could have made it alone with a baby to care for. Ultimately, as horrific as it was, the decision they made was the only one that would (theoretically) allow Judith to survive.

I could talk forever about this episode. It asks so many questions and breaks your heart. The writing in this show, amiright? I think the show does the deaths right, most of the time. None of us really get a good way to go out. It's just a fact. It's never pretty & it almost always means nothing. I think in that way, the show does a phenomenal job. It really does a good job at how things would really happen & the questions that would arise.

I did consider warning you that there are some really difficult scenes in this series.... But you handled this better than I thought you would. (It still makes me cry) Did you cry during editing? This was foreshadowed way back when Mika talked about Lizzie's therapy from before the apocalypse and seeing Lizzie feeding the walkers at the prison. This episode clearly is inspired by Of Mice and Men. (There is an audio play of this starring David Tennant and Richard Madden with not too shabby southern American accents.)

This was such an emotional episode. I love that TWD dealt with severe mental illness to show the dilemma it causes. As a parent of a child with mental illness it has always been on my mind - how would my family survive. My solution would be to stay with my child while sending off the rest of the family. This would give the family a chance of surviving. I don't know if I could do what Carol had to do. This is why this show is so great because it shows how complicated human beings and relationships can be.

Sometimes ending a person in the apocalypse, I think, is required..(if they appear as a threat. There be may instances where you don’t get a chance to know who that person was before the fall. It would almost be a reflex at that point. Of course you may feel intense guilt afterwards, but I guess it depends how badly you want to continue living in the apocalypse …

Pretty controversial episode but I didn’t see any other solution! Lizzie was dangerous to everyone and herself. Especially Judith! In this world there is no help and no other solution that I can think of! She probably would have gotten herself killed in alot worse way being ripped apart by a Walker rather than to not see it coming. Poor Carol, poor Lizzie and poor Mica 😢

what makes this even more tragic is that lizzie realized that she wasn’t just going to be punished. because she took a human life and knew the thinking of all around her, that you killed walkers and NOT humans, she knew that in the end she had to pay the price with her life. she was remorseful but knew she had to die for her choice. too much to deal with.

As everyone else stated in the comments, Lizzie was definitely mentally ill before the apocalypse. In my opinion she suffered from psychopathy. And the world ending, losing therapy, losing dad, and then the prison? It was enough for that psychopathy to present itself. She killed animals for no reason other than she wanted to. She didn’t feed them all to walkers. Hence the bunnies in the tree stump, and the rat inside the prison. Lizzie was a lost cause the moment the world decided to end. Carol did what she had to.
