I think Tyreese decided not to hurt Carol because he saw what taking another life did to her; Carol is not heartless or emotionless. Killing Lizzie was a tough decision to make, and even tougher to execute. Killing Karen was probably the same. She didn't make those decisions lightly and her actions(that had good intentions but still bad) weigh heavily on her and cause her so much anguish that she was prepared to die by Tyreese's hand. Tyreese saw that she is human and, despite misguided actions, has a good heart and a conscious.

It's heavy moments like this that make this show so compelling. I think this was the more humane resolution. She could not be trusted around Judith or anyone after this. It was either putting her down or abandoning her. The latter would just have had her "playing" with walkers till she was inevitably, painfully ripped apart. Just like she was about to let that one she was playing with in the yard almost get her when Carol was running over. She wouldn't have made it on her own. This was more painless resolution for her, really. Great episode.

Melissa McBride/Carol, won an award for this episode (Saturn Award I think), and she deserved it. Chad Coleman was also fabulous. I have tears in my eyes now just watching it again. It was a very "Of Mice and Men" tribute in a way. Lacy was right that Lizzie had to be schitzophrentic, and with no treatment, no medicine, no counseling, Carol did the only thing that could be done. And yes, Carol did feel she didnt deserve to live, and when Tyreese forgave her, it was a beautiful scene. Your reactions were spot on. As for Carol, she carries it all with her till this day.

The Blu Ray had an alternate angle of the “Look at the Flowers” scene from Ty’s POV from the window so we actually see Carol shoot her & see her body fall & react. It’s a much more jarring scene IMO makes it seem more impactful but Carol’s face does say SO much when it cuts to her afterwards.

Tyrese watching Carol shoot Lizzie may have been what caused him to forgive her because he saw that she had to make a difficult decision. Something prob no one else could’ve done. Carol is such a strong character it’s really messed up she has to go through everything that’s happened to her. If the girls didn’t die, then I don’t think she would’ve ever told Tyrese about Karen and David but since it was such a traumatic day she figured there was nothing else to lose. Tyrese’s ability to forgive came from him having to watch Carol make a decision that in the long run would save lies just like at the prison . :((

The whole Lizzie and Mika thing was just so sad and tragic, for both girls. Mika being killed by her own sister, the horror and trauma of it before she died, who knows what Mika could have gone on to do, she could have done great things. And Lizzie, just so much tragedy because her mental illness prevented her from being able to understand. Yes she did this horrible thing but it was clearly the product of this illness, and maybe if the world hadn’t fallen apart, she could have gotten medication or therapy to help her get better and overcome it as she got older, but this world they live in, there was nothing that could help her and she’s doomed to have this illness be the reason she has to die. It’s just so truly tragic for the girls. In a world with no zombie apocalypse, they could have both been happy and alive.

This ending always gets me....just like the ending to "Of Mice and Men". (Except Lennie wasn't a psycho killer.) But Lizzie was a tragic case. She was strong, determined, and a great shot, but her mental sickness mixed with the world they were now living in was a ticking time bomb. She had no remorse. No moral ground. And she was a child. There was no other choice. Now Carol knows why Rick sent her away, other than saving her from Tyreese. She had done just what Lizzie did after she killed Karen and David. She tried to justify it to Rick and saying she "had to do it." She's saw herself in Lizzie. That's why she told Tyreese "do what you have to do."

The Lizzie, Mika, and Carol story is one of the most tragic things I've ever seen. Lizzie was just a young child, but she represented a constant threat to everyone else she would ever have contact with. She couldn't be left on her own as she wouldn't be able to survive, but she had murdered her own sister and wanted to kill Judith, and her psychosis would have been getting worse after that. They really had no choice as they couldn't trust her, couldn't leave her, and couldn't have someone else take care of her as she would be a threat to them. The fact that Lizzie was crying and worried that Carol was mad at her made those final seconds even more excruciating for Carol. She seemed like such a little girl, but she was incredibly dangerous. Carol couldn't have left with Lizzie for several reasons. First, she was likely to kill Carol and couldn't be trusted with a weapon, but, left without a weapon, she was vulnerable to the walkers. Second, Carrol couldn't ensure that Lizzie wouldn't endamger other people they met. Third, Tyrese wouldn't be able to fight walkers off with Judith constantly in his arms. There simply was no other option left to them but to do what was essentially a mercy killing. Carol loved those little girls and lost them both. It's soul gutting that Carol and Tyrese had to make the toughest decision possible. I think he was able to forgive Carol for the other deaths because he had just had to come to an even more crushing decision about Lizzie and how sacrificing her life seemed the only path forward. That made him understand how Carol had felt at the prison when she feared the illness was going to kill everyone if she didn't act. Just so, so sad.

I remember the horror I felt when Lizzie killed Mika and the agony of knowing that killing her was the only thing that could be done. I've been waiting for Lacey and Steve (Steve and Lacey) to react to this one since they started TWD. Easily my favorite episode of the entire series-- powerful, gripping, well-shot, with great acting and character development. There are not many things that have ever been shown on TV that can do what this episode does. I often hold "The Grove" up as an example of what great television looks like. And it's not just good to look at the first time; this one will stay with you. Even though it has been years since it first aired, sometimes I still find myself thinking about "The Grove." Dark as hell, but great story-telling.

This is another episode where I was waiting on your reaction for. What a rough episode. Mental health treatment is an oft-discussed topic these days in our current world, and Lizzie is probably the first explored case of someone in this show who had signs of serious mental illness before the turn. We know that Lizzie clearly had some issues before the turn, and was perhaps being regularly treated...but could her condition have been exacerbated by the events of the turn? We see where people have had some mental breakdowns brought on by traumatic events after the turn, but had no sign of any mental illness before the turn. It does make me wonder about what would happen to people with a range of mental health issues in the Walking Dead universe. But on thinking about it, having the show runners plumb further into that territory would be a huge risk and sure to get backlash if it weren’t handled well. This plot line with Lizzie was harsh and controversial enough. I don’t think Carol necessarily *wanted* to die by telling Tyreese to do what he will after she confessed to killing Karen and David. I think that she knew that she couldn’t keep on hiding that fact from him, and she had accepted that he might kill her. Remember, she was there when Tyreese went nuts in his grief and got into a fistfight with Rick. She saw what he did when someone was trying to talk him down. She couldn’t keep as much of a distance from him after Lizzie and Mika (sp?) died. Carol could talk to the two girls, guide them, do some tasks with them, and essentially use them as a buffer. Tyreese made Carol uncomfortable the few times they were doing stuff without the girls around. Her buffer was gone, and the guilt was getting to her, so it became time to unburden herself.

Stuffs to think about by the end of this episode. Carol's especially, it's Karma, she killed Karen and David for the sake of others, now she has to kill Lizzie, who's like her daughter for the same reason. The scene with her and Lizzie looking at the flower, look like a normal parent-to-child punishment when the child did something bad and the adult need to teach them the hard way. Make you feel for Carol, by doing what she's about to do, she reached the point that can never come back from, and it'll haunt her forever.

To me this episode is so important because it encapsulates why the walking dead is so powerful. It makes us justify things we never thought we would, I mean Lizzie was just a child. Carol had no choice. She couldn't leave with Lizzie because Lizzie might kill her in her sleep and then end up killing more if she come across another group who took her in because she was a child. She was too dangerous to stay with them. Tyreese isn't mentally strong enough to kill a child even if she was trying to kill him and what if she took out Carol first? Neither of them are psychologists and even if they knew what mental illness Lizzie had there's no way they would know how to treat it and could you really trust that the drugs would work? A psychologist said that she wasn't psychotic and didn't in fact have any mental illness which I disagree with. I think maybe she had early onset schizophrenia, she claimed to be able to hear the walkers talking to her. Even if she had no diagnosed mental illness, she was too dangerous to have around. The problem being that psychopaths can mimic and even pretend to portray emotions at the right time, most are aware that this isn't normal behaviour and can mask it, so it's quite rare that psychopaths kill people. It seems to me Lizzie was more sociopathic, they have extreme anti-social tendancies and find it hard to empathise and show the correct emotions at the proper times.

Such a hard episode but it is what makes TWD such brilliant TV. Poor Lizzi and Mika. What do you do when anyone in this world is dangerously psychotic? Lizzi was very ill and needed a lot of therapy in a special kind of hospital but that's not available and she is obviously dangerous, just how dangerous is found out too late for Mika. Again TWD poses questions and gets us all talking. Great reaction as always.

I know this is two years old, so u guys probably won’t see this lmao but I love ur reactions to this episode! When I first watched it, I felt so bad for Lizzie. At the end of the day, she was a child suffering from bad mental issues. What sucks the most is that, if the apocalypse didn’t happen, Lizzie most likely would of gotten the treatment she needed and was able to live a normal happy live. It’s easy to become mad at Lizzie’s actions, I mean she literally killed her sister, but in her mind she seriously didn’t think what she did was bad. She was so mentally sick she thought Carol was mad at pointing her gun at her. That’s what makes it so hard to be mad at her for me. It’d be different if she knew her actions were bad, and did it anyway. But she just didn’t understand. It’s kinda like having a toddler not understanding the consequences of running with scissors. The actor who played her did a phenomenal job.

Tyrese had just watched Carol kill Lizzie because "she couldn't be around other people". She was a threat to anyone who may end up being with her. He saw how much Carol loved both of those girls. And he saw how broken she was because she had no choice but to kill Lizzie even though she desperately didn't want to. I think seeing all of that gave Tyrese a completely different understanding of Carol and he was able to understand why she killed Karen and David even though she didn't want to. He still doesn't think it was right I imagine, but he gets why Carol thought it was right. Heartbreaking episode. Very scary for completely different reasons. Can you just imagine the field day that serial killers and psychopaths could have during an apocalypse!!?? No one to have to answer to. Just lots and lots of people to kill! Great reactions as always

People have to understand you can’t reason with someone like Lizzie and she’s just a kid. My dad was a cop and he told me there was several cases where he had to deal with people with mental illness similar to Lizzie and he said you can’t reason with them the same way you can with a normal person. If you try to do that it will make the situation 10x worse you have to approach them with their “logic” to safely deescalate the situation. Unfortunately sometimes people are just unfortunate and born with a mental illness and they literally can’t help it and usually need medicine to make it at least manageable. With that said I completely understand people being so filled with pure rage at seeing a child die in such a disturbing way to another child that you want to strangle Lizzie but she’s just a kid man people have to remind themselves of that. Everyone agrees that Lizzie had to be killed after this I’m not arguing that, she was too much of a danger to herself and family but I don’t agree with people saying that they would “beat the shit out of Lizzie” when even Lizzie is incapable of understanding what she has truly done.

I can't imagine what Carol was feeling. First, losing her daughter, seeing her put down, then committing to care for Lizzy and Mika, then teaching knife skills to the kids, including Lizzie, then realizing that Lizzie had use a knife to kill her little sister. Then she had to kill Lizzy. Oh my goodness she must have struggled just to keep from going insane.

Steve said in an earlier video that maybe Carol could take Lizzy with her--I was wondering how that scene where Carol says that really hit him as he was thinking the same thing. 1)To really hammer home the heaviness of this episode, the puzzle the girls are working on is actually a picture of Sophia. 2)Mika telling Lizzie to "look at the flowers" is a huge foreshadowing since the beginning. It references how Of Mice and Men's George would tell Lennie to "look at the rabbits" and the ultimate heartbreaking sacrifice that had to happen in the end. 3)The deer is a throwback to Carl. They represent purity and innocence in this dark world. 4)Tyreese ultimately forgiving Carol couldn't have happened if they didn't just experience the devastating events of The Grove.

It's not the "Look at the flowers" scene that made this episode for me, it's actually Carol's confession to Tyresee. It's poetic, climactic and just well-written and acted. And if you do not know already the puzzle in the table when completed is a picture of Sophia.

Tragic. Just tragic. To this very day, Mika's death is sad and heartbreaking. I will always shed tears for this little girl. She was good, sweet and kind. And it also makes me really sad about Lizzie. To see a child not mentally all there is just sad. And then there's Carol who's also reached a point where she no longer wants to live. This world has taken a toll on her because of the things she's done voluntarily. Carol's taking all of that in, weighing heavily on her soul and her conscience, and that's why she tells Tyreese she killed Karen and David. She feels guilty and believes she deserves to die. She's had enough. Like I said, each episode has been one hit after another. Just like a domino effect. And you understood what that fire off in the distance meant. You're getting an understanding of where the characters are at and at what time all of this is occurring. You know which group came before the others. As you saw at the end of this episode, Carol and Tyreese took the train tracks. Maybe the ones who took Beth are at Terminus?? This episode is one of the most memorable ones on the show. Now you know what The Grove is about. I remember how shocked I was seeing Lizzie standing there with bloody hands, Mika's body on the ground and that close-up shot of the bloody knife with Judith in the back. It had me scared for Judith. Such a chilling moment. But overall, sadness overcame me. That's why whenever I see the title to this episode, I get this awful heavy feeling inside. For reals though, one of the heaviest episodes up to this point. RIP Mika and Lizzie. - Yvette

Lizzy’s brain doesn’t process information correctly, it’s not her fault. As mad as people get at her, and that’s valid, ultimately Lizzy is not at fault and as much a victim of this new world as her sister who couldn’t kill. It’s one of the great agonies of this life.
