I'm a police officer and I worked hurricane Florence and I was in charge of a bridge. I was told to shut down the bridge by upper command and a lot of civilians were not able to cross the bridge to get home to their loved ones. Most will beg to met let them cross but I was not able to. Only the Military and law enforcement were able to go through the bridge that was the orders. But some civilians will go through the bridge that was about to collapse not caring. We also had danger signs of power lines on the road and civilians would drive on the road ignoring our signs. We were out numbered as law enforcement. Also we had minimum water and food supplies. One squad got stuck and were forgotten. In my opinion when you are low in supplies and are forgotten some officers will probably leave their post. Civilians don't care about how the Government do their plans they do what ever they want. If the Government has a plan most of civilians will not follow it making caos for us and the military. That's where we might fail.

In the atlanta scenes you couldnt see any army zombie whatsoever, which means they probably deserted atlanta and went to their families. You also should look at the numbers. In WWII, 18% of our population was in the military. During the Cold War (Korea/Vietnam/Desert Storm), 7% to 8% of the population was in uniform. After the end of the Cold War, in the early 90's, we started a massive draw down, from 8% of the population in uniform, down 0.42% in uniform, even with our current wars. At the same time, we increased the number of places we are deployed. Yes we left some places (Philippines, Panama), but our forces are no where near the size they use to be. We did increase combat capability and lethality, meaning we don't need the same size force we did in the past, but, in a world wide (or even just a nation wide) "zombie battle", you need large numbers of trigger pullers almost more then you need highly skilled trigger pullers.

As much as I love the military, I think they could very well fail... Although I doubt they'd all go down the way they appear to in both Walking Dead series'. Think about it... In the first days or weeks of the apocalypse, people would be in some sort of denial. Not everyone... but a lot of people. On an army base, people die. hit by a car. Fatal training injury, whatever.... and you stay with your buddy. You get him/her into an ambulance or on a chopper and the next thing you know, Buddy comes back and suddenly the chopper goes down. And what happens? Emergency services react to it. It could cascade. On a ship.... we just saw how COVID took down an aircraft carrier. All it took was one person on board and suddenly, the most unstoppable machine in the world is stopped dead in its tracks. WITH THAT SAID.... I find it preposterous to believe that SEALs, Green Berets etc. could not get teams away from the destruction and start building resistance forces, just like during WW2. I've said it from the start of TWD and FTWD.... I really want to see a series or a movie that tells us how we lost the military. That would make for an interesting show.

Because the genre of zombies don’t exist in this universe meaning they wouldn’t instinctively have the “aim for the head!” mentality. Also if you don’t recall in The Walking Dead the CDC scientist whispered into Ricks ear saying “We’re all infected.” Meaning you die you turn unless your brain is damaged prior to death, if you get bit it just speeds up the process. Theoretically if this “Everyone is already infected, headshots only” information got around sooner they mainly would have been able to form a different plan of action to fight off the zombies and try to prevent more.

A lot of people cite the claim that since walkers are so slow, the military couldn't possibly fail, but not too many people remember how different fresh walkers were in season 1. Even the show seems to have forgotten. Back in Atlanta, you had walkers using primitive tools, fast jogging, and even scaling fences. While the fresh walkers in season 1 weren't anything like WWZ infected, they were still a lot deadlier than the decayed walkers we see now. I can easily see the faster and more ferocious walkers from the first season beating the military, along with the breakdown of command and such.

The only way I can see the military failing is if before the outbreak something else used up a large chunk of military resources. I think that had the military decided to set up barricades a bit away from the hotzones (like a shipping yard/port) instead of setting up inside the hot zones using shipping containers as walls and stack them at least 2 high and 2 wide then they wouldn't have had much trouble holding zekes back they could have stood on top of said containers and just picked off the zekes 1 by 1 and slowly expand the walls but have cages around the entrances to areas that allow them to exit and enter the safe zones with a vehicle and use a shorter length shipping container as the door and can be easily moved out of the way by guards (with a truck crane) once people are proven to be non infected and just station guards around the docks to check for any zekes that managed to somehow get to any dry docks. you could have a base set up with minimal zeke interference and the navy could dock in the port which would allow a safe escape and additional security or allow the military to conduct operations farther out utilizing helicopters until there fuel runs out or the helicopters don't run anymore from maintenance problems.

I think the biggest threat with the walking dead is their numbers. Ignoring the fact of how the zombies infected so many people in the first place, a military base would only be overrun if there was a giant horde. But at the same time, the show doesn’t take into consideration explosives, such as grenades and C4 that ground based troops would have access to. Not to mention grenade launchers. In the end, even a zombie horde in the millions may not be able to beat the military, simply due to the explosive firepower the military has.

I think that the walkers don't shamble at the beginning. The most likely scenario would be in conjunction with the decay. Freshly dead should move faster and slow down over time. There is also the shock value of shooting and nothing happens and even more so would be your best friend in arms gets bitten, dies, and is now a member of the growing hoard. Now you have to kill your best friend. Humans have emotions, get tired, have to eat and poop. Zombies have no emotion other than hunger, don't sleep, and will not stop. Total war a zombie hoard can do, humans can't. One other problem would be is this would be a world wide pandemic. One other problem is people would have a hard time cooperating with each other. Hell, congress would deny the problem even when the hoard enters the building.

Yes we’re all aware of zombies so it’s different going in but some people will panic, seeing an actual zombie stumbling towards you is not something anyone wants to see. Pulling off continuous head shots on stumbling uncoordinated zombies at distance is no small feat, they’re going to have to be closer to us before our troops would start to effectively put them down.

Besides plot armor, the military failed because most of the units obviously didnt follow protocol of compartmentalizing, separate units being responsible for their assigned fields of fire. Its also easy to see that solid barriers on the periphery were not formed or properly setup. And the greatest misstep was not fighting from cover. One question that should be posed is, "if the military was overrun, why dont we see a lot more of Walkers in military uniforms, instead of all the civillian clothed Walkers?" Great discussion as was the first video.

Great points, and early on there were dead wearing military uniforms as well as police uniforms. Now, maybe the fact that the story hasn't taken the groups to any military bases could explain why there are no dead in military uniforms. At some point early on, the military could've retreated to their bases to fortify and set up evac zones. We only hear from some survivors about one military base falling, but others could've possibly not been overrun.

Back when I first read the original ,(book) world war z I had a relatively good idea on how to capitalize on their attraction to sound, scent and other stimuli, take existing hardened bomb casings (in particular the models designed for penitrateing hardened bunkers) and stripping the explosive filler and replacing it with hardened speaker, scent and possibly even light systems connected to a large battery (possibly with solar panels integrated into the designs) that you could drop out in open areas instead of using live people as "bait" to slow down hords you could even make a relatively quick to produce air mobile version out of a standard conex that could be deployed via drag chute or with larger transport helicopters, you would load up a platoon or infantry into helicopters to provide security, deploy an array of these solar powered stimuli makers between safe zones or even outside of built up areas they are prepping to clear to speed up an minimised risk in the process. I think at the time the book took place armed ground drones were in their infancy but I assume today we would ramp up production of those small remotely controlled drones armed with either an M240 or M249, the Russian Uran series (roughly between the size of a civilian car and a BMD infantry fighting vehicle) would honestly be the perfect tool for crowd control (large enough to crush zombies and durable enough to survive the bulk of running over endless swarms), these could even be modified to be more efficient by swapping some of their beefier armament (autocannons and ATGMs) with machineguns and large ammunition belt stowage boxes and additional fuel, their range could be increase by cutting back on their armor (I assume the normal ones would come out to play like the M2 IFVs that are returned to the front lines when dealing with hostile human holdouts). I feel that if the author rewrote the novel today it would have even crazier ideas and strategies on how to deal with the undead threat (affordable consumer drone tech would be great for intelligence gathering as well as the code used to build semi autonomous, lightly armed drones in large numbers as a way to augment human soldiers with the SIR rifles and their plastic, high visibility anti bite armor)

The only plausible reasons as to why the military would fail would be if: if the walkers were fast moving, had some problem solving abilities(opening doors or windows) the abandoning of post by personnel because they leave to take care of their own families
@TrippyFsho3 жыл бұрын
It depends on how long it takes for the military to take care of it. The more zombies, the more ammo, the more firepower ur going to need, and afterwards how would u know that you've gotten them all? I think if it got that far that the military would fall, not everyone is that strong and they do look like human beings, some people are going to get scared and become weak links that may cause problems for the military's fall.
@AgiDaKinG4 жыл бұрын
The only way the military would have been overrun is if they were caught off guard. Which would mean that the zombie virus would have to be low key enough for long enough that the number of zombies would just flood through cities before a response could be formed. You can't even get a little coronovirus these days without someone noticing and freaking out.

The military is a complex. well oiled machine. Yet, the machine still relies on the greater whole being society to function. :V Logistics are the biggest bane of a modern military, and have been the heel of a professional army since roman empire times. When society starts breaking down, and cracking, resources will go from very abundant to very rare in very short amounts of time. The military will attempt to control these supplies, but people naturally react out of fear to get them first too. Thus now the military is fighting people and walkers. In addition to this, walker numerical superiority, and difficulty to kill causes a big problem too. While most riflemen can probably hit with relative accuracy, battle stress will begin to kick in as they realize they are being surrounded, and are hopelessly overwhelmed. The human mind can only take so much of that, and will begin to crack. Even our soldiers have a breaking point, and when you hit that problems start arising. Stress leads to worsening accuracy, and before you know it you will start missing more then you hit. Additionally, the ammo capacity, and weight cap of a soldier also creates problems. As they can easily run out of ammo half way into a fight with a swarm. Support like airstrikes, and artillery wont be very useful either. As if the damage isnt strong enough to at least incapacitate the enemy, then they wont be eliminated as a threat. The military is a very powerful force. Especially in modern times, but don't underestimate the power of a million man flesh wall coming right at you. In addition to this, about 2 people on average die every second right now. In the time that it took me to write this(10 minutes), over 1,200 people have already died. Take this and put it in terms of each dead person becoming a walker, and then you see you have a problem. Not only can you not prevent the spread of the virus since it already infects everyone, but you also wont be able to prevent the death rate from rising dramatically when shit hit the fan. People panic, people have issues, and people will inevitably get killed because they dont have any idea about the walkers yet. You can start looking at a death rate of 100 or 400 people a second around the world at that point, and that is still being generous with the deaths. Then at that point ten minutes means more like 60,000 walkers just came into the world lol. The biggest weakness of the military in this scenario is that the people are the supply of potential walkers, and a source for the virus to flourish. As long as there are people, there will be walkers.

👍..How long would it take a state to call up the national guard average time? How long would it take the Government to Mobilizes Federal Troops in American cities & states and towns & villages? Depending on the time there might be more Zombies than Troops on the ground that are emotionally or mentally ready to shoot unarmed people not to mention Bullets . How many soldiers or law enforcement would try to go home to protect their own families 1ST?

Its the fact EVERYONE TURNS and everyone who get bitten, turns. These 2 things make the spread impossible to defeat on a mass scale. In other zombie shows/films... You get bitten, / Infected then you turn... This is far more easy to contain. Even like the movie Doomsday... You can quarantine it,. Who knows if people born after the outbreak are immune to turning after death? People who were living in space?

For a zombie apocoplyse to happen, it'll need to be in the perfect scenario. A world where zombies arent pop culture, just like TWD. Then its all down hill from there. How a zombie apocoplyse starts, is when a virus starts going around. People start getting sick, and start dying. A new pandemic starts and people panic. So while theyre focused on that, the dead start to reanimate, and completely side swipe the unsuspecting public. It starts off slow but the virus itself is still the main focus point until piles of dead bodies start to rise. Then the military roles in. They are a force to recon with but without knowing how to effectively kill the dead, and the rioting public, as well as the spreading sickness, theres so much going on that even if they do find out how to put the dead down, it'll be too late cause everything is already in anarchy. So i dont think the military lost due to plot, I think they legitimately got overran. Especially in cities like Los Angeles.

I had a roommate who was a Marine. He lost a dorm wrestling match against a civie. The guys at the dorm started teasing him that a Marine should not be so easily beaten. He said, “we are not trained to wrestle. We are trained that if the enemy ever gets their hands on us, we have done something wrong.” The average Marine can make a head shot at 300 yards.

Honestly? While the Walking Dead was an interesting look at dytopian societies and a world where humanity becomes its own worst enemy...it is an *ABYSMAL* zombie story. The zombie outbreak is almost an afterthought to the plot (in both the comics and the show). You want a realistically dangerous zombie AND a reasonable explanation of why most world militaries would get their asses kicked? Go read "World War Z". The "Battle of Yonkers" sums it up rather nicely.

I think the biggest factor on the possible failure wouldn´t be the military itself, but rather the failure of the economy as a whole. Our modern society is not self-sustaining anymore. Our water, our food, our clothes, our housing and electricity, all of that is made through a very complicated supply chain. Thanks to this sophistication, we have been able to grow our numbers to beyond our natural limits, but it has also made us vulnerable as a species. Most people have no idea how to feed or protect themselves, how to find shelter and other such things. Couple that with a population that far exceeds the natural availability of food and drinkable water, and you get a catastrophe if a crisis hits. Even in regular refugee situations, thousands of people die of exposure, hunger and disease, while the world around them still works normally. Now imagine a refugee situation happening EVERYWHERE on Earth at the same time. Supply chains become non-existent, and the emergency supplies run out pretty quickly. Sure, the military could set up safe zones, but for how long? With civilians outnumbering the military many times over, their MRE supplies would only last a couple of weeks at best. Scavenging is a good option for small groups of survivors, but for thousands of people, it is unsustainable in the long run. What happens then? People either die of starvation, or start fighting over the scraps that are left. Many will die in that fight, and many of them will become walkers. The military was probably aware of this, so they started limiting the amounts of people accepted into the refugee camps, which just left most of them to perish on the road without supplies (like we saw in the scene with Shane and Lori, before Atlanta was bombed). It is possible that some civilians, many of whom were probably armed, even attacked the military bases in hopes of looting some supplies. That would lead to even more dead, with many of them again becoming walkers. You probably get the picture by now.

I think the critical point in 'the military fails' idea is that the military isn't one cohesive thing, it's a set of tools, a set of options, each with it's own strengths and weaknesses, it's own benefits and drawbacks. The military doesn't operate in a vacuum, it is directed by whatever the political structure is in that country. The majority of western countries are not going to want full scale military deployment, effectively against their own citizens, in the early stages of the outbreak. By the time the seriousness of the outbreak is known and indisputable, the time for deploying military forces in containment operations (If there is a government left to give orders) has already passed. Secondly, while the military is deployed it is consuming supplies which are not being replaced. Food, water, fuel, ammunition, spare parts, medical supplies, even manpower...the moment the logistics of the civilian world begin to break down, the military supply lines are endangered and probably cannot be restored. If they are able to hold and defend a base, yes, they will have stockpiles, but unless there are regular supply drops those stockpiles will start to run out. If serving personnel are allowed to be I g their families on to the base, supplies will run out faster - if they aren't, many will abandon their post to try and reach their families, especially once the command structure breaks down, no-one is paying them, and the world as they knew it is basically gone. You can also expect to lose huge numbers to suicide through PTSD as the outbreak moves on. Casualties and shortages will gradually see all the force-multipliers fall away - helicopters, aircraft, tanks, artillery. In a world where everyone is going to turn into the enemy, there is no military solution because the military is also becoming the enemy. The best use of the military in a TWD situation is to try to protect infrastructure until a cure is found, effectively buying time. Engaging zombies should be one possible tactic to achieve that, not an over-arching objective in itself.

The problem with the military in zombied shows and movies is they have firing lines and use tactics that just don't work 1. Holding lines or compounds 2. Firing lines 3. Low power weapons 4. Not improving as the virus expands

The gas masks that the military used could have actually been helpful. When you die you come back. But that might only apply to the people who made contact with the infected or were near them. If someone wore a gas mask near infected then they might have not gotten the virus and when they die they might not comeback because since they had a gas mask on then they might not have picked up the infection. So the gas masks might have not been useless after all.
