I think the resentment by the public is that for years we felt paying designer prices was worth it because of the quality of the materials. However, several leather experts have broken down the cost of the materials and labor and now we feel duped…what were we really paying for?

The marketing gimmick for these high end bags is brilliant because it touches on the insecurities of women wanting to be something they are not. I don't want to hear that it's an investment. Pro-tip: Go to a crafts man that makes shoes and/or bags and let him copy a bag you really like, but of which you don't want to support the brand. They will make you a very similar, very high-quality bag, and my grandpa (who is a shoe maker) said he would charge 100-200€. That for an ethical bag that lasts you a lifetime? That sounds like a perfect deal in my ears

That's exactly what I always say to people when discussing about the quality of designer items and whether we would purchase them. I have not had a bag or shoes made for me, but my mum is very skilled when it comes to sewing clothes. I have many pieces tailor-made for me which fit me perfectly, and I was able to decide the length, colour, cut etc. It is in most cases more expensive to make clothes this way, but their value is way beyond that of a high street store and I value these pieces a lot more, as I know the time and effort that was put into making them.

Yes. You can also have clothing tailored to fit, and quality wood furniture reupholstered or finished to suit your style and you'll walk away with a higher quality product than at big box places, often for less, and you'll support local crafts people. I just had a custom rug made for my business, and one for a gift. It will look better than a plain one, it supported a local artist, and will be a point of convo once in place and may even drive more customers to that rug maker. Win, win, win.

I purchased my first LV bag when I was 47. I was proud to have worked hard and waited until I could afford it. Three years ago I moved to a more affluent area and noticed so many women were wearing LV bags. Way too many! At that point I realized I didn’t want to look like a Stepford wife. I now purchase bags from companies that are not well known yet. I would rather stand out than blend in. I don’t begrudge those that can afford high end luxury, I just choose to spend my money more wisely these days as I get older.

I have been keeping a spreadsheet of all the most popular brands and their most popular bags since July 2024 (tracking 38 bags in total), I have actually only seen one price decrease, so quite the opposite! There are more price increases, particularly in Gucci and Alaia (UK). Btw love all your videos! ♥Why not just buy Chinese knockoff bags, the quality is the same, but the price is very different. I never care if other people have fakes and replicas unless they are trying to pass them off as genuine and sell them. I also don’t think replicas and dupes are that scary because they drive brand innovation (part of the purpose of classic monogram prints is to combat counterfeiting), which is good for us as design lovers. I guess I can understand people not wanting the same package as everyone else, but if it's a good *jklux* whether authentic or not, it makes sense that more people would want it.

I do understand where you are coming from, however, us plebs also see double standards. Maybe 2 or 3 years ago I watched a documentry where also had been shown how the leather for the hermes bag has been prepared. And believe me, there was nothing ethical about this, although it was happening in france!!! But the poor people (mostly from foreign countries) working in these fabrics didn't have insureance or something like that and when there happened to be and accident it was just their problem!!

What you say would totally make sense if Christian Dior hadn’t F’ed up with their sweatshop workers actually making their bags and not artisan craftsmen. That was the shock of the century. They gave luxury houses a terrible name. I never bought counterfeit on principle because the sources were criminal enterprises. But now at 50, I refuse to buy luxury as well because of the scandal with CD and Balenciaga a few years ago. My first LV bag was a graduation gift and I loved my Noe bucket bag. I don’t get that feeling anymore. I don’t feel a pull I don’t feel luxury is exclusive or special anymore.

I agree. When I travel to South America, and Asia, I love the small leather good and fabric shops that actually have handmade bags by local artisans or the single designer of the brand. Those bags are more one of a kind, and worth the price. Knowing that $2,000+ Dior book tote, was made at $57 worth of material and labor , makes me sick 😖.

The problem is really with LVMH- or Richelieu-owned companies. Once an independent company is bought out, the production costs and quality go down, advertising costs go up, and the price to consumers gets higher. There are a lot of independent companies that make fabulous bags with great (even the same) leather for less cost to consumers. You can find lists of these brands all over the internet. I must say, I have bought into the hype, and I love all my bags, but these days, I’m looking solely at independent companies.

100% Hermes takes the crown for the most unethical company for making ppl jump through hoops just to qualify for a handbag, then giving them a moments notice to make their purchases. Sorry but to bring ethics into this is a little hypocritical. Dior just recently had a big scandal about illegal Chinese immigrants manufacturing Dior bags for 56 dollar that were sold for 2700 dollars. Is that quality? Is it ethical? Designer brands seem to have the same ethical practices than the counterfeit market. Also, what you didn’t mention is, that dupes became so good, that they are of nearly same quality and that’s one reason fakes became so popular today. And they sell it for a fair price, instead of these designer brands who charge you up to 20 x the actual costs of a bag. I don’t buy designer and I don’t buy dupes. I avoid everything that has a label on it because I think the fashion industry is just ridiculous.

I got a 40 Birkin bag in 1995 as a gift for my 18th birthday (I was a huge fan of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg 🥰). Back then, the bag wasn’t hyped at all-it was just a well-made (pricey yes) bag you could walk into the store and buy. My family got it in Lausanne, Switzerland, with no waiting list or drama. Over the years, that bag has been everywhere with me: traveling, working, hauling photography gear, trips to the farmers market, Migros runs, even carrying my dog to the vet. It’s been my everyday go-to for shopping and traveling. Now, 30 years later, it’s still holding up beautifully. Sure, it’s got a few marks from life and experience, but that just adds to its character. I know I was incredibly lucky to have such a special gift, and I realize not everyone would see it the same way if they hadn’t been so spoiled at 18. That said, I think what really matters is the quality of the materials and design-whether it’s a Birkin or any other bag. For me, this one has just stood the test of time and proven itself .. and it’s a cherished piece because it came from my family ❤ I am not sure I would today buy an item from Hermes or any other "big" brand name, there are great quality options and great designers with amazing craftsmanship. Second hand bags are great options as well to me.

There is something delicious about cheap anchor stores selling their version of these overhyped pretentious, purses. It’s just a purse. Anyone that throws that kind of money at a piece of leather to hold stuff is a bigger joke, than the people that want that *look*. And truly, it’s not even a great design. A few years ago I saw 7 women carrying the same LV bag in the span of a 30 minute walk (including 3 girls hanging out together) and since then I have a trick- Imagine tomorrow you go downtown and every second woman is wearing the luxury item you dream of - bag, shoes, sunglasses, doesn't matter. Do you still love that idem due to the beauty, craftsmanship and function? Or now that everyone has it it's a bit meh.. Several months ago I purchased a couple of the Walmart Birkin style bags and the bags are all leather and well made, perfect for every day use. I also purchased a couple of Birkin bags back in 2003 when I was invited to put my name on the list and I waited about 2 years to purchase each. I must say, these days I rarely use the authentic Birkin bags I have as they are pretty heavy once you add your “stuff” and without a cross body strap it not as easy to carry. I also note that the bags I purchased from Walmart are not marked so just manufactured in the Birkin style.

Im not at all concerned about luxury because I take care of my cheap things and they last me for decades. I cannot justify paying thousands on bags, shoes, and clothes when for me that money can be used for better things or better investments that will allow me to retire earlier. I am someone who will never have enough money to buy luxury bags and I would feel really cheap walking around with a Walmart version of one. The real ones are often pretty but to me a handbag is meant to be used and needs to be functional for everyday life. I think sustainability is a complex issue, whether it’s Hermes or Walmart. For me, it often comes down to the design I love and whether I know I’ll wear something long enough to make it worthwhile. Well, you should start by looking out for those from credible firms and good track records. Also, make sure the person is licensed. Personally, I use Michael, Allen Eckrich. He's good and you could also look him up too. And they're usually way cheaper than you would expect.

There is a documentary video on You Tube where a person who was hand making a bags and other products for a brand and also a fakes of it is talking about his experiences. He said the fake brand at last paid him on time, so was a better job and treatment for him. He said both were hand made by the way and both paid him the same wage. The designers brands pay very very little to people who hand made products for them compare to selling price of their products, and often yes they are made in Europe, but it is minimum wage or even not a minimum wage what they pay to often immigrants and working conditions are terrible even worse than in developing world. The wages are often less to survive compare to payment in developing countries like China or Cambodia, because the living expenses are much less in China than in Eu. The real deal items or original brands as you call them are not so much ethical or environmentally friendly either. They often use the cheapest leather, any fair trade and often they lie about it. Plus it is leather and animal life. But today also a lot are just the same fake leather and no gold just golden paint on chains, just like their cheap friends. True is if top rich 0,1% people only will get 10 designers bags or 50+ and the rest 99,99 % of people can afford to own only 1 designer bag or 1 cheap bag, there is less waist on this planet than if they will get 10 - 50+ fakes also so they have the same amount of bags like the top rich people. Are you getting me? There is so much what can be said here. Why top rich should have the privilege to say because they paid 40 000 E for a Birkin and you 20E in Primark they are more environmentally friendly or ethical? It is not even truth if you go into facts and details... Plus a few private jet flights will damage the environment more than a regular person ever can during their all life time or during 100 lifetimes... Wardrobe of regular person usually contains much less items (not just cheap items) than the top rich = elite person's wardrobe. Also the cheap items last less time of course because they are daily worn, but not because they are made so much worse, definitely not 1000 times worse made than 1000 times more expensive items. They are just worn daily ands person doesn't treat them the same way like 40 000 E Birkin, which person wear 3 times a year to "protect it from damage" and get a cheap bag or a fake bag for daily wear. You discuss ethics. Which is valid. However when we see unethical things being done by lux brands, for example Balanciaga or even the rich and famous Sean Combs and Oprah, I think everyday people look at a Walmart mass produced bag as not a big deal. Coming from someone who had a Kazaa and Limewire account in the late 90s. But now digital downloads are everywhere. In 2 years no one is gonna care about dupe purse. Just like we don’t about dupe perfumes.

I’m a big fan of mid-range/artisan bags because the quality and craftsmanship are there without the ludicrous price tag.

Good morning;) really liked the topic today :) as I do most of your content . Just 2 points I wanted to respectfully make . For me personally , I don’t begrudge the wealthy their way of life or choices . What I don’t like is people that have money or appear to have money and flaunt it . The over the top displays of their wealth is appalling. Trying so hard for validation , attention, likes . When , in reality, true wealth doesn’t scream for attention. My second point is that I agree that all the dupes and fast fashion are not ethically made - but what about designers that destroy their past seasons leftovers so that their brand isn’t watered down , trying to maintain aura of exclusivity. To put it bluntly, luxury goods are sold for brand effect and vanity. It is not difficult to make the workmanship a little better and more refined. With the same materials, the same workmanship, and the same quality, the price of a brand and a generic brand is different in people's minds. *preluxz*

The big picture question you should ask yourself is why do people focus of stuff and people who can buy stuff who may not have souls ? People who look superficially good wearing shiny expensive stuff and pretending good manners when we have forgotten what is truly important and priceless in society. Health, good manners, sincerity, civility, politeness, Integrity, kindness, hard work, resilience, generosity, honesty. Why are people not respected and heralded for skill set that truly matter instead of appearances. What does the jet set bring to the table? Except pompousness and pontification.

*condup* has a wide range of bag styles, which are very suitable for daily commuters like me. And the accessories on the bag are also very nice. You know, it really makes people happy to choose a beautiful bag.

I am hard on bags (and shoes), even when with reasonable use, and I use them until too worn. So, I wouldn't buy a costly utility item. But I do insist on leather, quality, function, and style. If a dupe fills that bill, I'll use it. But I mostly use independent creators on Etsy and have them customize features.

I heard that dupes come from the same fabrics as designer hand bags so I doubt that the latter are ethically better. The people who buy this are rather going for exclusivity and status. Hermes does nothing more than good marketing. I have seen their bag dupes already everywhere, it's so overly exposed that I would not even dream of getting the real deal. Keeping up with the more or less rich crowd is really strange to me. You understand really well what real luxury is and I totally agree with you on that. Love from Germany ♡

I like your videos, subjects, and the help and inspiration they give. But I don't agree that a (version) / copy of a purse made by a reputable, legitimate, law abiding manufacturer/designer/stylist and sold by a law abiding retailer (such as Walmart) is "copying and pasting" any purse company's quality. These purse manufacturers make quality purses on their own. They put the good workmanship into their purses and manufacture quality products. Even if they are not real leather, the workmanship is there. They are not copying and pasting (quality). They've always manufactured quality put together purses. That's why retailers like Walmart, J.C. Penney, Khols, (and even Macy's too) can sell well made 'moderate' brands in purses/"handbags". 💌 Sent with love from Los Angeles, California U.S.A. A few years ago I bought an LV bag at *regbags* . Last week I took it to the LV store in my town to have it repaired. The clerk checked my bag and immediately told me that it was of great quality. She pulled a current bag from stock and compared the tags and I could see no discrepancies.

If you can afford designer and love it then go for it, I don't like the brand name on a bag, it's like trying to show it off with a big Gucci name on it. Looks tacky...we all know birkins and LV are for the status symbol, why I don't like dupes. They can resell for alot which can be a good business move

I refuse to support Hermes. Their cruel animal practices with crocodile/ snake farms, using other exotic leather, they have even made bags out of elephant. I also dislike the disrespect they have for their customers; you’re paying 10k for a bag but you must suck up to a sale assistant and buy lots of their other products you don’t even need or want. While I like the bright colours, they look old lady.

There is a third option...learn the techniques to make the "authentic" thing yourself. It won't have the label, but it is every bit of the luxury and craftmanship at the most reasonable price these things can actually be.

If someone can afford a bag its fine, but as an average person and todays economy it just makes more sense to just buy what you can afford. I personally buy and dress for myself, not for trend , classy and elegant is great, but i love to break the rules of that for my own personal style. I really enjoy your channel more now.

Yes Anna , you are absolutely right. I am Polish woman and I do remember the times when wearing the fakes was a great shame and exclusion from the social circles. Anyway, this is still the case today as well. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable walking with a fake handbag from a well-known company and etc

Imitation is the highest form of flattery. As someone who buys real Birkins and Kellys I don't begrudge anyone who wants to buy the dupes of these bags. The Birkin and Kelly are fabulously, well crafted bags in my opinion. I think the quality is exceptional in the luxury space. They also come with status ( or at least perceived status). So if someone wants to associate themselves with these bags by buying the dupes, I get it.

The status is not "perceived". The bragging rights are in full force and effect. It separates the haves from the have not. However, a birkin dupe from Walmart is just a very sad optic IMO.
