You can't eat a Birken, drive a Birken or pay your mortgage with a Birken. The marketing gimmick for these high end bags is brilliant because it touches on the insecurities of women wanting to be something they are not. I don't want to hear that it's an investment. Pro-tip: Go to a crafts man that makes shoes and/or bags and let him copy a bag you really like, but of which you don't want to support the brand. They will make you a very similar, very high-quality bag, and my grandpa (who is a shoe maker) said he would charge 100-200€. That for an ethical bag that lasts you a lifetime? The problem is really with LVMH- or Richelieu-owned companies. Once an independent company is bought out, the production costs and quality go down, advertising costs go up, and the price to consumers gets higher. There are a lot of independent companies that make fabulous bags with great (even the same) leather for less cost to consumers. You can find lists of these brands all over the internet. I must say, I have bought into the hype, and I love all my bags, but these days, I’m looking solely at independent companies.

I got a 40 Birkin bag in 1995 as a gift for my 18th birthday (I was a huge fan of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg 🥰). Back then, the bag wasn’t hyped at all-it was just a well-made (pricey yes) bag you could walk into the store and buy. My family got it in Lausanne, Switzerland, with no waiting list or drama. Over the years, that bag has been everywhere with me: traveling, working, hauling photography gear, trips to the farmers market, Migros runs, even carrying my dog to the vet. It’s been my everyday go-to for shopping and traveling. Now, 30 years later, it’s still holding up beautifully. Sure, it’s got a few marks from life and experience, but that just adds to its character. I know I was incredibly lucky to have such a special gift, and I realize not everyone would see it the same way if they hadn’t been so spoiled at 18. That said, I think what really matters is the quality of the materials and design-whether it’s a Birkin or any other bag. For me, this one has just stood the test of time and proven itself .. and it’s a cherished piece because it came from my family ❤ I am not sure I would today buy an item from Hermes or any other "big" brand name, there are great quality options and great designers with amazing craftsmanship. Second hand bags are great options as well to me.

@@easygoing6397 I agree that capitalism is not bad- to the extent that it fosters innovation, creates opportunities, and drives economic growth. However, it becomes problematic when it promotes unchecked consumerism, deepens inequality, and manipulates people into chasing material symbols of status. The key is finding balance-valuing experiences, community, and sustainability over frivolous consumption driven by corporate profit motives.

A few years ago I saw 7 women carrying the same LV bag in the span of a 30 minute walk (including 3 girls hanging out together) and since then I have a trick- Imagine tomorrow you go downtown and every second woman is wearing the luxury item you dream of - bag, shoes, sunglasses, doesn't matter. Do you still love that idem due to the beauty, craftsmanship and function? Or now that everyone has it it's a bit meh.. If the latter - then maybe you don't even like the item but just it's exclusivity. Save yourself the money!

There is something delicious about cheap anchor stores selling their version of these overhyped pretentious, purses. It’s just a purse. Anyone that throws that kind of money at a piece of leather to hold stuff is a bigger joke, than the people that want that *look*. And truly, it’s not even a great design. As someone already commented, it’s better to have your house paid for and some money in the bank for those rainy days, even if you carry a simple leather bag. Sorry but to bring ethics into this is a little hypocritical. Dior just recently had a big scandal about illegal Chinese immigrants manufacturing Dior bags for 56 dollar that were sold for 2700 dollars. Is that quality? Is it ethical? Designer brands seem to have the same ethical practices than the counterfeit market. Also, what you didn’t mention is, that dupes became so good, that they are of nearly same quality and that’s one reason fakes became so popular today. And they sell it for a fair price, instead of these designer brands who charge you up to 20 x the actual costs of a bag. I don’t buy designer and I don’t buy dupes. I avoid everything that has a label on it because I think the fashion industry is just ridiculous.

I think sustainability is a complex issue, whether it’s Hermes or Walmart. For me, it often comes down to the design I love and whether I know I’ll wear something long enough to make it worthwhile. Personally, I could never bring myself to carry a real Birkin or Kelly bag, as I’d constantly worry about damaging it. Recently, I sold many of my luxury bags because I found myself gravitating towards less well-known brands instead. Over time, I’ve grown disillusioned with the luxury industry as a whole. These days, I find myself appreciating quality, design, and uniqueness more, often from less mainstream designers. I also really resonate with your shift toward appreciating the smaller, simpler things in life. Once your consciousness is awakened, your focus naturally starts redirecting toward what truly matters. That’s the journey I’m on right now, too. really enjoyed your most recent content about sharing failures too!

It doesn’t matter if you owe money or you are a miser and save every penny. The point of life is having experiences. No matter what you choose to spend your money on, as long as you can afford to pay your bills and you don’t have to demean yourself or take from others to afford your lifestyle…you are living luxurious. The over the top displays of their wealth is appalling. Trying so hard for validation , attention, likes . When , in reality, true wealth doesn’t scream for attention. My second point is that I agree that all the dupes and fast fashion are not ethically made - but what about designers that destroy their past seasons leftovers so that their brand isn’t watered down , trying to maintain aura of exclusivity. This is also unethical. Thank u for all u do ;) have a wonderful day 🎉

Hi Ana, I have loved your content already in the early days because you were upfront and didn't shy away from saying unpopular things. You have amazing integrity and I admire how you have tried to self improve yourself and upgrade your content to not only great fashion advise but also to self development. I think you reflected excellently on the trend situation and talked about every aspect of the Walmart bag topic.

I think she's tone deaf on the subject because she clearly can't understand the pressure that social media creates to keep up with the Joneses. If she can acquire a Birkin if she desires it, why can't everybody else be satisfied with cake?

luxury brands are the ones that most exploit workers. but a lot of people don't talk about it just to maintain their status with these scholarships. Whoever buys these products is also supporting work similar to slavery!

Can we trust that designer products are ethically sourced when we hear about Dior in Italy?

The other element I've always wondered about is "Do you even like the bag?" Or do you like it because it looks like a Chanel, Hermes, etc.? For example, I would not buy this bag at any price because I don't like how it looks when it's open. It doesn't appear to be functional. Thank you so much Anna! I really appreciate your content and have enjoyed watching you grow as in individual.

Ana does seem to have grown, matured or found her niche from when she 1st came on the scene.

Labor exploitation is everywhere. Look at Dior being investigated for their subsidiary exploiting workers in Prato. I would rather have a lab created diamond and a real bag leather bag made from a Guatemalan artisan. Affording manufacturers who are transparent about their supply chain is a luxury. It's even more disgusting when a luxury brand turns out 1000% in profit on an item using the same exploitative practices as a fast fashion brand.

I just don´t get this dupes/counterfeits phenomenon. As a creative, the point about the ethics of dupes and counterfeits is so spot on. Regardless of how much a brand chooses to price an item, someone had to conceptualize it with the immagination, create it from their expertise and turn it into a tangible product. Crazy that any random seller doing dropshipping can copypaste a model that required effort and committment. I also wonder how many influencers promoting "Amazon dupes" actually keep and use the items they endorse, as I suspect they return everything after filming. I wish I could say I don´t judge, but whenever I see someone wearing a dupe I always think: if you need to buy yourself validation, at least go for the original 😂

Luxury brands also have been busted for unethical practices. I have no problem with a dupe if I like the style. I don’t like the Birkin so I am not interested in a dupe of that bag. My days of spending a lot of money on a bag are over.

I’m glad you mentioned “certain” people because honestly, some of us who don’t care about brands, just go to stores to find a good purse or item. I remember when dupes looked exactly as the real. Now, there’s a blurr everywhere that even preachers are preaching about it.
