There was a later episode that ended with the narrator saying that although his father never did get around to being baptized, he was always known and admired by friends and family as a truly godly man.

j l always felt that it was not the reverends fault. he should have been told that it was boot leg whisky and not fruit juice. he had never drank in his life and he did not get drunk on purpose.

it bothers me how disgusted John Boy was. I think it was more Grandpa's fault. he tried not very hard to stop him from drinking. but it is not as if they went to a saloon together. someone should have taken him aside before they got to the Baldwins and explained what the recipe really is and that he should politely decline from drinking so much of it. it was not his fault.
