JOHN BOY LOVES HIS TYPE WRITER AND HE WROTE SO MANY GREAT NOVELS AND BOOKS ON THE SHOW. RICHARD THOMAS NEEDS TO WRITE A BIOGRAPHY OF HIS OWN LIFE AND SHOULD DO THAT SOON. HIS TITLE SHOULD BE CALLED GOOD NIGHT JOHN BOY, THE LIFE OF AMERICA'S FAVORITE YOUNG MAN BY RICHARD THOMAS

Great episode!! So touching at the end when Erin buys the typewriter for John Boy and the lady tells him it’s his, the expression on his face, the look in his eyes when he looked at Erin was priceless. Then he thanked her and hugged her, what a special, loving moment between brother and sister. So poignant and heartfelt. I always wished I had a brother. Someone to look out for you. Erin was lucky to have four brothers. Jason protected her from that jerk. She had a great family.

Loved this one, Thank you Judy ❣️ P. S. In the one scene, I'll never stop laughing, You and John boy - in The Typewriter - were excellent! You - so scared to tell John you sold it, and John boy wondering how he'll ever get to reach adulthood in that house with such duress in his life, mentioning he might as well go down to the pond and drown. Then your mom coming to your aid, sticking up for you, haha, which I thought was another blow to John boy. That segment I could watch repeatedly and laugh at you both continually. Thanks for who you were in the Walton's and who you are in reality. You're a sweetheart in both lives.

Yes, it was wonderful how the Waltons episodes kept the character of Grandma alive and it is very natural to keep remembering someone when they are recovering from an illness. Regarding this episode, Erin was very intelligent but somehow, she never had to focus on her future until she was faced with her high school graduation. For Erin, high school graduation was an abrupt change that she was not ready to face because it meant that she needed to find a direction or plan for the rest of her life. She was a sweet girl but she was not excited to strike on her own like JohnBoy, Jason and MaryEllen, even Ben and JimBob to some extent. For most of us, we discover our career paths in college, however, some of us graduate and then decide to focus on a different career path. Thanks again for another great video!

One curious note is that this episode not only did John-Boy address his former teacher Rosemary Hunter Fordwick by her given name instead of as 'Mrs. Fordwick' (which I believe that since John-Boy had been raised to heed elders' call re how they were to be addressed instead of just terming them whatever popped into his head, that likely Mrs. Fordwick herself had spelled out that she now preferred him as an adult to call her by her given name). This episode marks Mariclare Costello's last appearance as the beloved educator(and I think later that year, that she married 'M*A*S*H' regular Alan Arbus [Dr. Sidney Freedman- the recurring U.S. Army therapist]). This was some months after the last appearance of Rev. Fordwick (John Ritter) but where [and their baby daughter] were supposed to be didn't get addressed. Regardless, I liked how her character had been willing to instill a love of seeking knowledge to so many of her students and encouraged them to pursue their dreams instead of just staying in their proverbial boxes! It was great that the show had such a positive portrayal of an educator on a regular basis! One thing was for certain that this episode set Erin on the trajectory of earning a steady income with a variety of jobs over the rest of the time she was regularly depicted. . but never enough for her to move out solo until her marriage. Whoa so MUCH paced into just that one episode! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Hi Judy! Thank you for another great video. And such a wonderful episode with lovely characters. I am wondering if you are aware of any special working relationship between director Harry Harris and writer Kathleen Hite. They worked "together" on many episodes of both The Waltons and Gunsmoke. This seems like an interesting coincidence and makes me curious. As far as their available biographies, I don't see anything that would connect them except these many instances of writer-director credits. Thanks again for sharing so much of your knowledge with us ❤
@judynorton2598
@judynorton2598 8 ай бұрын
I’m not aware of any particular connection. On TV at that time writers and directors were hired separately and at different times. I don’t know that they even spoke about the script together. By the time the show was being filmed it was usually in the hands of the story editor, Earl, or writer/producers to do any rewrites needed.

Where do I begin here? This episode was filled with so much joy, love especially between brother and sister and watching Erin not realizing what she wanted to do and gets upset, and as the the evening progressed Olivia and John were told on their front porch saying that's right, Erin is their only child that hasn't stated what she wants to do. Alot going on with Ike and John Boys book. The the typewriter and what Erin was trying to do in helping John Boy by getting a job at a business school to pay for a type writer , which inturn helps John and Erin at the same time, etc so much support and love as always. Erin is the reality girl in family as most don't know when they graduate what job they want or career they want .Many are like my aunt who had several jobs until they retired.

I was Erin in my family. One of the reasons was because I related to her after graduation. Not knowing what my career choice was, feeling lost. I did end up just like her. Working on the phone and eventually in a office. Never became manager like she did, but my path was pretty much the same. Retired now.. thanks for posting this. Always will be a fan.

@@brookehanley3659 yes, it's most people have not experienced enough of life after graduation, and dont know what direction to go in. But it's funny how I was exactly like Erin in my choices. One big difference. My mom was pushing me to go to secretarial school after graduation. I didn't. My argument was, what if I decide not to be a secretary? I wasted that time. Mom know best, because that is exactly what happen to me anyway.

I remember this episode, and felt so bad for Erin that she felt so uncomfortable and almost like adults around her who were commenting on what other people were going on to do as their future and careers and she had no idea put pressure on her. I remember graduating from high school without a clue as to what I was going to do. Little did I know but I had met my future husband the senior year of high school and within 2 years we were married and I was a stay-at-home wife and mother from then on.

Loves Erin in this episode, so believable. Alice Hirson is 95, can you get her as a guest? (busness school lady) John's zinger about cologne "Whatcha got there, a quart of oil?" and Jim Bob's " I smell banana oil" (glue). I teared up at typewriter scene, its like John Boy entered Shangri-la.

This particular episode was one of my favorites - I always enjoyed the interactions between Erin and John Boy...probably because I'm closest in age to Mary McDonough and I always wanted a brother like John Boy. Another episode with moving parts reflecting real life. None overwhelming, but the day to day of a family. My father was one of 9 children (born between 1905 and 1926) of which six where daughters. My grandfather sent all his daughters to business or secretary schools after high school so they would have a trade independent of their husband.

I remember my HS graduation so clearly. I loved HS and was so sad to graduate, although, unlike Erin, i did have a plan -- and was going to college. But there were many tears spilled that day. I also remember the moment one of my teachers, who was my boyfriend's home room teacher saw us together and said, "Oh, i didnt know you two were dating." We purposely made sure she never saw us together because i used to write all his absence notes. 🤣

I loved Erin's dress in this episode! Several people have mentioned getting teary about the loving typewriter/tuition gestures and I, too! I always felt some were too harsh to Erin about not knowing her career path. Mary Ellen was a bit unusual for the time period and location to have forward thinking, modern notions of going out into the world to become something. It seems most girls were raised to be good daughters and someday a good wife ~ someone who would take care of her elders as well as her children and husband. The unusual trait of The Walton's was that the parents were determined that each child woukd obtain a highschool education as opposed to going only to 4th or 5th grade. In those days among poorer people a highschool education was quite an achievement! It was great, though, that Erin lucked into a business school! Loved Fanny Tatum and Mrs Brimmer. Poor Mr Godsey! Poor JB ~ can't please everyone with his writing ~ except, well, maybe in reality he did accomplish writing for many, many. It was nice to see John Dayton in the graduating class! Thanks so much for another great BTS. Much love to Walton's everywhere ❤

I haven’t seen much of this yet and might be commenting again, but I loved how Jason protected Erin. Reminds me of how John Boy was ready to fight Cousin Job in S1, I loved how they were all so protective of each other. Maybe Richard and Jon could help me if some guy tries to hit on me, trust me I have been hit on older men before and it’s kinda uncomfortable. They would be the perfect grandfatherly protectors !! 🥺🥺🥊🥊
