I remember watching this episode in its original airing as a child, because I’ve been a coin collector all my life, and I remember the $20 gold piece. I didn’t quite get the meaning of the seagull, or the meaning of how much Maggie enjoyed her day with John Boy. As an adult, it is that much more meaningful to me now. Thank you for your memories and insights as always, Judy.

Hi Judy. I just wanted you to know that I hadn't seen this series since I was a kid in the 70's, until last year when I was hospitalized with massive heart failure. They didn't think I was going to make it and I decided that if I was going to die, I wanted to watch the Waltons and stay in a happy mind space. I ended up watching the whole series and it brought me much comfort in a very difficult time. This, coming from someone who never watched much Television in their life, and Is still alive today to tell you about it. This show really was something special. :D

Absolutely one of the best episodes. I loved the dynamic between John Boy and Maggie as well as John Boy's struggle to do the things he wanted to do as a young person, but also doing what he knew was the right thing to do, bringing this final joy to Maggie's life. I think she would've tried to drive there herself and probably had the heart attack going or returning and John Boy would really have felt guilty then. I have to note, many series introduce a character in a single episode for the sake of the story as with Maggie, but on the Waltons, it was always a way that we felt like here that Grandma really was friends with Maggie.

Always loved this particular episode, the actress playing Maggie was phenomenal and charming. I really thought this perfectly conveyed how much we should treasure our elders! It was so touching and cute as you said how John Boy sacrificed going to the dance with flighty Marsha and enjoyed the ocean and escorted Maggie so gallantly!! I love the symbolism you suggested that the seagull flying free is also like Maggie's spirit 😍

One very important element of the Waltons is that the elderly always had significant roles in most of the episodes. Esther and Zebulon (aka Grandma & Grandpa) were pillars of the family where the children could hear their stories about their younger years. I think the show, the Waltons, was one of a handful of shows that clearly illustrated that it is important to recognize the contributions of older family members. Great episode where JohnBoy learned why Maggie wanted to see the seashore one last time. Very bittersweet and the episode reminds us to cherish older family members/friends. This episode still brings tears to my eyes; it is all about life and death, the natural cycle of the world. Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones!

This episode is a favorite! It is touching and sentimental, without being overly schmaltzy (imo). My husband and I married on a mountain in New Mexico. We no longer live there, and though my husband is, thankfully, still living, I enjoyed revisiting the spot a few years ago, close to our 35th anniversary. The episode is a reminder, I think, of how folks don't always state our needs/desires directly, so it's good to approach each other with discernment and grace.

John-Boy got the better bargain taking Maggie to the sea instead of taking Marsha Woolery to the dance. (Of course, imo, doing anything other than being with Marsha was to John-Boy's advantage, anyway. 🤭) In that one evening, John-Boy was given a treasure trove of experiences and lessons from which to draw on for his writing as well as his life. ✌🌻

You did justice to this lovely episode, Judy! One notable about The Walton's is how the writers often showcased in a positive way ~ truly caring lifetime marriage. Maggie, of course, was a widow. I love that Mr Hamner acted in this story! Richard Thomas is a good dancer; you can see his ballet heritage! Marcia Woolery got a taste of her own medicine. I wasn't crazy about her character, though the actress did a fine job! I had hoped John Boy and Jenny would have married. Can you create an episode about The Separation and The Caretakers? In the first, there's such a romantic ending, again valuing lifetime commitment. In the latter, there are many scenes where you actors did such a fine job w/ rapid timing of dialogue and actions: the scene where the children try to decide what game to play; the strained conversations between JB and Grandpa at the table and in the car. Oh, well...there's just endless Walton's material to make one smile! 😊❤️💚🎄✨

Don't know why, twice now I've seen Eric's Ben when you've pointed out David's Jim-Bob (today catching fish with Elizabeth), attributed perhaps to the Walton superb casting. Wonderful episode. The music used in this episode is very haunting, especially when it echoes as Maggie pictures the ship out in the sea and is remembering her happy times of when she arrived on the shores, it was like a similar style to the recurring haunting theme in Titanic (1997). Many years ago my parents had a home in Paradise Cove. I spent quite a bit of time at the beach there and recognize the spot where Johnboy is playing in the water. The Rockford Files was also filmed there.

This is such a wonderful episode!! I remember you told us before that Earl Hamner played her husband and after so many times after seeing it never recognized him until you said something. I also loved how in the Thanksgiving episode John Boy let's know that when he was running around on the beach he was thinking about Jenny. I always look forward to your videos, thank you Judy!😍

Thanks Judy.. What I like about this episode is that we all learn a lesson in helping other's or older family members to remember a time in there is more important things in life . when sharing in our family friends or family's lives... To help someone othere than our selfs... John Boy did a wonderful thing - seeking others then our self.

I love the parallels in the Walton episodes, especially in this one, where Maggie and the seagull are both healed and set free. It was truly another touching episode as John Boy extends his heart of gold, which has been instilled by an exceptional upbringing. In this day and age fraught materialism, greed, dishonesty and other detestable behaviors, it's refreshing and heart-warming to experience a program like the Walton's that reflects genuine care and concern for one's fellow man.

Very touching episode. Her expressed heart's desire to return the coast. and John-Boy being there for her in this regard, enabling her to come full circle as her life eclipses. The Waltons: Ever mindful of the needs of others, and as we used to say in the Army: with selfless service.

Cute episode and great recapitulation as always, Judy! Neat how Earl Hamner himself was included in this one! He was so young! I was watching an episode of The Waltons on the Hallmark Channel the other day, and whatever behind-the-scenes person did the actors' hair was really good--because everyone's hair looked especially amazing, haha! Really a lovely recap of one of my very favorite episodes, so lyrical and touching and I did also feel each time watching this episode that the seagull indeed was more than a little symbolic of Magie's spirit going "home'. Also loved the detail about how they were dancing with the camera rather than with one another in the closeups, very fascinating to suddenly know that. Loved the attention given to John Boy and Grandpa reciting poetry as well. Just lovely,

Happy holidays, Judy! Having just turned 50, the scene where Maggie tells John Boy "there will be other dances," touches me deeply. That's so true about the circle of life. These are some of the things I share with younger people: they have more time! And thanks for highlighting where this was filmed. It's interesting how films and television use optical illusions, so to speak. Viewers see this as the Atlantic Ocean, while it's actually the Pacific. LOL! Speaking of that, this episode has two characters I dislike: Marcia Woolery and Dr. Vance. Marcia is too finicky, which I understand is how her character was written. When I see Marcia, I always miss Jenny. Wish they had shown more of Jenny. And Dr. Vance is too serious. I'll never forget when he yelled at Mary Ellen in the episode where Grandma gets sick and Mary Ellen misdiagnoses her. But this is probably how the character was written as well. By the way, I don't believe you've talked about "The Prize" yet, where Olivia's old boyfriend comes to town. I was amused to learn that the actor was actually Michael Learned's real-life husband. Furthermore, according to their bios, it looks like they must have been going through a divorce when this was being filmed. So, I'm curious to know how the filming went for that. How did Peter Donat's appearance come about and how did everyone get along during the filming?
@judynorton2598
@judynorton2598 2 жыл бұрын
Good actors can make you love them or dislike them based on the story line. A testament to the two actors you mentioned. I have not covered The Prize yet. I don’t recall any issues with Michael and Peter working together. I’m sure she gave her okay for him to be cast and she wouldn’t have done that if it was going to be untenable for them.
