‘The Waltz | La Valse’, composed by George Ivanovich Gurdjieff / Thomas de Hartmann and played by Jo Brunenberg on accordion.
This composition is also known as ‘N14 Bis (The Waltz)’ and is part of the ‘Oriental Suite’ (1923-1924, recorded in 2003 / 2005 by the Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands). 'The Waltz' is a part from the Oriental suite which was composed by Georges Ivanov Gurdjieff with the help of his pupil Thomas de Hartmann.
Gurdjieff himself also played the harmonium.

About George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (1877-1949)

George Ivanovitch (G. I.) Gurdjieff was a spiritual leader who advocated for achieving a higher state of consciousness through what he called “The Work”, a form of internal work on oneself. Born in Russia in the late 19th century to parents of Greek and Armenian origin, Gurdjieff taught in Russia, Georgia, Turkey, France, and eventually the United States.
Gurdjieff taught that the way to experience “The Work” began with physical labor. He emphasized strenuous labor combined with lectures, music, and sacred dance (Movements). His focus was to increase mindfulness and minimize daydreaming. Gurdjieff’s sacred dances, called “Movements,” was one method he used to help followers focus their minds. The Movements were not intended for performance, but as a form of spiritual development.
His followers included composer Thomas de Hartmann and his wife Olga, who became Gurdjieff’s secretary; Jeanne de Salzmann (who founded the Gurdjieff Foundation in 1949); Alfred Orage (who would eventually supervise The Work in New York); P. D. Ouspensky (one of Gurdjieff’s earliest followers) and many others. Among his early pupils was Jessmin Howarth, who became an expert on Gurdjieff’s Movements and how they should be performed. Other prominent Movement students included Alfred Etievan and Marthe de Gaigneron.
Rond het leven van de Grieks-Armeense filosoof, mysticus, schrijver, componist en choreograaf Georges Ivanov Gurdjieff (1877-1949) hangt een waas van mysterie. Deze zoon van een Griekse troubadour werd vlakbij de Russisch-Perzische grens geboren en zocht al op jonge leeftijd naar spirituele en esoterische kennis. Tijdens reizen door Centraal-Azië en Afrika absorbeerde hij talrijke spirituele melodieën en heilige dansen. Hij ontdekte dat dans en rituele bewegingen de menselijke gesteldheid diepgaand beïnvloeden en ondermeer de alertheid en het bewustzijn stimuleert. In zijn educatieve methode De Harmonieuze Ontwikkeling van de Mens namen spirituele dansen dan ook een grote plaats in. Het doel was om met aandacht en toewijding een balans te creëren tussen lichaam, gevoel en geest. Gurdjieff richtte nabij Parijs en in Amerika een instituut op waar leerlingen middels een Spartaanse levenswijze aan hun innerlijke ontwikkeling werkten. Een prominente leerling was de Russische componist Thomas de Hartmann. Met zijn hulp componeerde Gurdjieff de oriëntaalse muziek waarop de heilige dansen uitgevoerd werden. Dankzij onderzoeker en producer Gert-Jan Blom verschijnt voor het eerst Gurdfjieff/de Hartmanns orkestmuziek uit de periode 1923-1924. Het bij de vier cd's behorende 255 bladzijden tellende boek Oriental Suite bevat prachtig fotomateriaal en veel historische documenten.

Thanks Jo, for another fascinating and haunting piece of music. I had heard of Gurdjieff and his books, but I didn't know he composed music too - or was it De Hartmann who wrote it? I like your arrangement - the bass pattern is very hypnotic. Would you be able to put the sheet music on your website? I would love to try and play it myself

Thanks Chris, 'The Waltz' is a part from the Oriental suite. As I understand it the Oriental suite was composed by Georges Ivanov Gurdjieff with the help of Thomas de Hartmann. Gurdjieff himself played the harmonium. As for the score just send me an e-mail message via my website.
