Fantastic! Do you have a web site or some way to follow you in this endeavor? I watched it a second time and have one suggestion...These are survivors and would, if they had them, know how to handle firearms. The gun handling was the only part of the film that I thought needed work; number of shots fired before the firearm is empty and needs to reload as well as how the actors handled them. I'm a firearms instructor so it's something that I tend to notice. Beyond that, I can't wait for more!
@iharrup7 жыл бұрын
Your firearms insight is invaluable, especially since I love using guns in my films. Hopefully my future projects are better up to snuff in that department! As far as a website, I'm working on it! Thanks for your enthusiasm, I didn't expect the reception this film has received so far so I'm a little behind!

Nicely written, great actors ( I especially thought the lead "short" woman slave did an amazing job) and I appreciated all the little things like the dirt make up, torn clothes, homemade raft and barefeet...etc., that a lot of apocalypse videos are missing. The only very minor and small critique... If The Wanderer just won a fight to save himself from being taken as a slave he really should've taken the pistol, even if he is a "fair trader" he could've even given them the shovel, the orange and whatever it the other totally unidentifiable thing was as they left limping away. But that's minor and just the way one viewer sees it. Also I noticed that your credits are too small of a print for people like myself or watching on a large screen smartphone. Although I did find out the lead woman was named Anna, she was great. I'm looking forward to her in the sequel. Thank you for making it and sharing with us.

I appreciate your comment! Yes, sometimes things shot don't turn out how you thought they would - every film is a lesson in that regard. The next project is always better!

Is the sequel to this available, or in the works? I thought it was really great and it lit up to a part 2 cliffhanger ending so it would be amazing if there is a part 2 somewhere. Thank you to whoever made it all the actors and production people and of course to ever who posted it here on youtube.

iharrup, This is one damn good short film. I look forward to seeing a feature film of it. I was intrigued from the beginning. Very well written and well executed. The Wanderer reminded me of Liam Neeson. He was a cool character. Excellent job on the dingy and torn costumes and dirty makeup. It makes me realize that that is an area I'm going to have to work on in our films. Excellent film, sir. Thanks for sharing.

I look forward to seeing the full feature! This is a very powerful short film. The narrative seems convincing despite some of the few issues with the logic that some of you mentioned alrey (e.g. the dubious scene about them holding the grenades and managing to cross the river, while the marauders hold their fire). Overall quite convincing, it has that close-up raw poignant element reminiscent of The Road, and the acting and the chemistry among the actors is very gripping and synergistic. The details are well thought out convincing (rags, filth, unkempt, malnourished looking scrawny characters.) The screenplay and the writing as well! I appreciate the fact that you leave plenty up to the interpretation of the viewer, there are no facile references and easy giveaways from the dialogue to indicate what precipitated this Collapse (and in such a Hobbesian nightmarish world, who's going to remember or even care for that matter anyway?) Might I suggest in your full feature film to include and incorporate elements of ecological ruin? What was a little bit incongruous was that the landscape scenes included well- cared for fields and a rather flourishing forest, although I realize once industrial civilization falls apart, and the human population deansity plummets dramatically, whatever is left of ecosystems can gain some measure of resilience and partial recovery.

Really nice makeup and action.
@commonsenseisnt7797 жыл бұрын
That was fun! Thanks! I especially liked the two main characters and the vibe you set up between them. The little details were good too as someone else pointed out. The plotting needs significant work, because the fight with the slavers made no sense, and leaving the girl with the thugs to be gang raped is not going to produce the smiling young lady sitting on the grass by her former lock and chain at the end. It might be better if they don't hook up romantically; a little URST can go a long way in driving a plot. Like most movies, you need three acts, like maybe: (1) forming the partnership, (2) the preparations and journey, and (3) completing the mission. The easiest way to create that same vibe would be for him to simply buy her at a slave market and hand her the key right away - no strings attached. Then he needs to come up with a good reason for her to go with him (if there were genuinely no strings attached). Maybe they have to find and liberate her kid sister. Maybe he has skills she wants/needs to take care of herself (no one seems safe alone in that setting). You could also have fun with him interviewing different "candidates" at the market. Presumably he needs more than just a short woman with a level head. If he needs her skills, even if he has to teach them to her, it's a real partnership. They could even pull a heist for some traveling money on their way out of town. Maybe there are some mini-quests or problems to solve along the way. Also, the idea of a fortress with little holes into the basement really doesn't leave him much to do in Act 3 - unless the fortress is really a mini-quest/problem along the way to the real main destination. Another thing that might help, is keeping a wry sense of the absurd lurking in the background. A great example of this sort of thing is the original "Conan the Barbarian" with Arnold Schwarzenegger (ca. 1980 before he was a big action star). Not a great movie, but they did the not taking themselves too seriously part really well without getting silly the way too many fantasy films do. My $0.02 FWIW. Good luck!

Good acting, directing, costumes, plot etc. What's not to like. Well done. The actress reminds me of a young Summer Glau. You hit the jackpot with her. The lead actor was no slouch either. The grenade thing was a mistake. If I were one of the bad guys I would have just shot at least the guy when they were out of blast range. A better idea would have been to take the leader on the raft and make him swim back - or something like that. Hope you are proceeding with the feature. If it is as good this short, it will be well worth watching. It might also be suitable for a TV series. Anyway, all the best and good luck. - Dave

This was well done good acting especially the girl. It drew me in I started to care about the characters and want to know what the wanderer is after. Left me wanting more which I guess is the point of the film. I thought this was very realistic as to what a post apocalyptic world would be like. Slavery would certainly be one of the first things to happen, especially to women. If you think HUMANS are a civilized creature then you know nothing. Look what the NAZI's did during World War II or ANTIFA's Brown Shirt tactics of today. Look to the violence in the Middle East or Africa. CIVILIZATION is just a thin veil or veneer. It would not take much to bring it all tumbling down. IT HAS HAPPENED TO EVER SINGLE CIVILIZATION BEFORE US, AND IT WILL HAPPEN TO US.

If the slave does not pay, enforcers with sticks and guns will come and take the slaves property. If the slave does not have enough property, or resists the taking of the property, the enforcers will kidnap the slave and put the slave in a cage. Slavery currently exists in the United States. Great idea, decent execution. Realistic post-apocalypse costumes and behaviour. One thing that didn't pull off (perhaps due to the short format) was the fights. The river crossing conflict didn't make much sense to me. They could've been shot getting on the raft. Perhaps less guns and more knife-fighting would work better.
@iharrup7 жыл бұрын
Fights are the hardest thing for amateur filmmakers to pull off; without stunt training, it's hard to make them look right. So you got me there, but that's an interesting thought: knife fights. Perhaps in the feature length version, there will be more of those... Thanks for your comment, glad you like the other aspects of it!
@dirkfrey47157 жыл бұрын
Yeah... everyone in the post-apocalypse seems to run around with an arsenal of guns... my guess is people would go with knives, bows, spears etc. Bullets run out and make noise, easier to be located. Another thing though.... the slave-girls with the chains. Personally I reckon the chains should be more of a hindrance. Like chain to each other, or tie the neck to the hands or something like that. Just a thought.
@iharrup7 жыл бұрын
In cases like that I go with style over realism; it's hard to guess how people will actually live in that kind of environment, so a few things are up to creativity. In this, chains on necks are like a slave brand of sorts, though it could be simpler to just brand them haha

Although this is good for a short film, I do have some issues with it. 1st: Post-Apocalyptic=stealth, quiet, preparation, covert. Walking around in chains is bound to be heard & is a sure give-away when trying to approach someone silently (use a rope). 2nd: the action of the fight was confusing. Sure she shot the wrong guy, but right after they seemed to have given up (what’s with that). 3rd: the small tents to the left by the river when they first approach look brand new. How long has this story/struggle been going on? I still like the film, just wanted to post a few things to look for in film 2.

all in all, a good film. I thought it was a little unrealistic when they got in the raft and the thugs just let them go.

I'm glad you like it, when the feature length version gets made you will see how that gets resolved.

Ok, likable film, but here are some things to consider: after surviving the attempted capture and/or murder by the slavers no way would he leave the pistol in their possession, nor would he give them the shovel - both are trade goods as well as weapons. Killing the men and adding the woman to the slave coffle are the only pro-survival options. Then when he freed them the other women could decide what to do about the slaver woman. The ferry scenario was also not very survivable. A better option that puts the short girl at less risk of rape and/or death would have been to surreptitiously scout the camp and either steal the raft at night when they were all drunk/sleeping, or attack the camp, also at night, with the functional grenade and picked up firearms. As it was written I kept expecting the lead ferryman to just kill our 'hero' and take his gear and the girl.
