FGM happens to some extent in a lot of places around the world. "MRAs" are often quick to point out that boys are mutilated too. It is true that babies born with a penis are circumcised for no good reason. There should also be a greater focus on intersex genital mutilation and the forced sterilisation of mentally-il, disabled, and indigenous people, for example. (We trans people here in Finland have had to prove sterility to legally change sex. The laws suck everywhere. It's relatively safe here, though.) People often like to point out that there is no need for feminism in rich western countries, but this is obviously not true. It is western governments and corporations that have in the past and still do to this day cause or worsen problems for minorities in "less developed" countries. The US is supposed to be one of those rich western countries where everything is perfect, but all those murdered black trans women tell otherwise. When people talk about problems in other countries, there is always a cry for focus on their own country; but when the focus is brought on their own country, nobody listens or calls you a snowflake. You think that Canada is so much better than the US? Check again! (Sorry, too much Coca-Cola! My socialist immune system reacts badly to capitalist rubbish. nyeh heh heh)

Only due to the new, political/social 'interpretation' of what the NPP has become. Don't get me wrong, I love her work, and want her to get way more publicity and funding, but I'm tired that the NPP has nothing to do with actual Peace anymore, so not really a Peace Prize. It has become a political tool for attention or support of a cause (not necessarily related directly to peace), ever since Jagland became the president of the committee. And it has continued even now that he has left, sadly.

This woman is incredible. FGM is still extremely common in my country (Sudan). Even though it goes against all religious and cultural standards, tradition trumps all, so it boggles my mind the amount of cognitive dissonance required to perform this disgusting procedure on your child. There have been campaigns against it, but we really need someone outspoken on the issue like Edna.

I’m all for leaving babies be the way they were born because I don’t want to do make a decision for their bodies that they might end up resenting me for later on in life(I’m talking about my children here as not everyone shares the same views as I do). Mutilating babies and young children should be a felony regardless of intent of the parents preferences. If a parent cuts up and mutilates their child’s face they go to prison yet in so many countries if they cut up and mutilate their genitals it’s considered okay and normal
@harrisongoode3554
@harrisongoode3554 4 жыл бұрын
@Garett Crook if you take the time to teach your child to wash his dick, such "benefits" of male circumsision become moot. Male genital mutilation leads to the loss of thousands of nerve endings on the glans and unnecessarily opens up the risk of suffering medical complications and even permanent trauma induced brain damage, violating the sanctity of a baby's body in such a barbaric, needless to say without the baby's consent, is a wicked vile crime no matter the gender of the baby. There is zero reason to mutilate a baby's genatalia, PERIOD.
@ninjasheep7492
@ninjasheep7492 4 жыл бұрын
Garett Crook male western style circumcision has next to no notable health benefits beyond the anecdotal or statistically inconclusive. It got popular in the US as a method for religiously fundamentalist authoritarians to reduce masturbation. The few studies often shown for benefits are cherry picked among a field of inconclusiveness much like how you could find studies which say a small amount of wine is healthy or studies which show wine is unhealthy. On top of which it has direct negative health effects. For one circumcision like any surgery can result in numerous complications (do not google these if you want to keep your lunch). It also significantly reduces male sexual pleasure due to damaging of nerve endings from lack of protection. The medical and psychological effects of sexual repression are widely documented and statistically significant. Of course not all mutilation of children is equally bad, I would rather have someone cut off my finger than my arm, but the downplaying of it isn’t beneficial.

Also HIV populations are mainly in places like Africa. Where circumcision is at its highest. I don't think anyone in America has a real risk of getting HIV with these medications we have to treat HIV like PREP. And so on. Circumcision that is not medically needed should be banned. People like you weep and cry, when the brave isn't from their same tribe or when they want their clan to be praised to comfort their ego. But you must appreciate her work, because she saves your cousins and clansmen and it seems that saving of your cousins and clansmen from everywhere in the horn of africa has no value. That is her work and she doesn't differentiate, but she cares the poor and the rich under the same roof. She saves dozens of souls of your clansmen, if this hasn't value, i don't know what has a value in your eyes. You are still angry for her for her political views and conviction. You should better blame your weak personality, tribal identity extremism and then your maladjustments. She has nothing to please your fragile clan-obsessed ego!! You've told some amazing stories about incredible people, but this is one of my favorite people you've ever covered. She is bigger than life and she understands that her message is more important than herself. Continuing her work despite credible death threats is very brave and it's part of what makes her so inspiring. Thank you for covering her story.

I translated the subtitles into Czech, I hope it'll get accepted. Please, translate them as well, especially if you're from the communities where FGM commonly occurs. We all have to do what we can to end this horror. Please, share the video everywhere you can. Silence hurts. Please, be stronger than your mothers and grandmothers and don't let this happen to your daughters.

@@recklessroges It is not easy for victims, because of Edan some people come out. It takes a long time to understand that you are a victim. If the mother understands she was Victimized she wouldn't do it to her children. Strangely enough, the victim and the perpetrator here are a females . A men against. I know some stories The man divorces his wife because of it.

To all of those arguing about male circumcision in the comments, FGM is being given the focus here over male circumcision because it is a far FAR worse practice. Obviously male circumcision is also mutilation, but it is not being given the focus here because it is much less horrible, and will most likely be decreasing in prevelancy much more rapidly than FGM . We can recognize that both are mutilation while acknowledging that one is much more significant of a problem than the other.

I had the privilege of living in Somaliland for two years, teaching History to incredibly bright teenagers. One of my girls wrote about her FGM experience for a class assignment. Today, many of my former students (including males) are working hard to educate and advocate against this harmful practice. They are the ones who will usher in a brighter future, as you indicated. It cannot be forced from the top, or from outside - but we can celebrate the change-makers! Thank you for centering Edna's voice in this piece. What a legend!
