There are many things that are depressing about the modern culture wars, but none more so than the war on the past. There is a concerted, fierce and increasingly successful effort to not just make us ashamed of our history, but to disconnect us from it entirely.
How did this war start, and more importantly, how can it be won by defenders of Western civilisation? To answer these questions, Will is joined by sociologist, author, and commentator Frank Furedi. Frank’s new book is titled, “The War on the Past: Why the West Must Fight for its History.”

Another interesting interview. I shall be reading Frank Furedi's book as an student of history I love the research that adds to our understanding but hate the revisionism that hides it to promote a viewpoint. It is a great shame Orwell is no longer available for you to interview . I think he would have loved the podcast format and he certainly foresaw similar situations though coming from the politics of his period. I have taken the liberty of assembling a few of his quotes that seem applicable - he would have been far more focused. “In left-wing circles it is always
felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman
and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse
racing to suet puddings. It is a strange fact, but it is unquestionably
true that almost any English intellectual would feel more ashamed of
standing to attention during ‘God save the King’ than of stealing from a
poor box. All through the critical years many left-wingers were chipping
away at English morale, trying to spread an outlook that was sometimes
squashily pacifist, sometimes violently pro-Russian, but always
anti-British.” “The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” “The people will believe what the media tells them they believe.” And their goal of course is: “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book has been rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And that process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except the endless present in which the party is always right.” “The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became the truth.” Of course he also saw the solution which you are upholding here and which we must all strive for: “Free speech is my right to say what you don't want to hear.”

Good insights. But I wonder how many people were and are never connected to history to begin with, because history maybe the most neglected topic of school education. That includes the "old school style" of blind memorizing of dates (when did Alexander the Great conquer Persia) instead of an analytic approach how and why things were they were ... but I guess most would prefer watching football or play any sorts of games ...
